How often do you clean out your fridge?

Am realising I might be a bit skanky. Been to a couple of friends lately and when invited to fetch things from fridge found it sparking clean. I do clean mine fully, shelves out, etc once in a blue moon every couple of months or so, maybe less but sometimes more often. I wipe at obvious muck as needed and pull out the stuff that has mould growing on it or veg are now identifiable is out of date more often. AIBU? Preparing to be flamed for this....

Our help gives our fridge the once over each week.
It makes me sad that people talk like this.

But back to the op's question. Probably twice a year (like literally hardly ever!) But obviously I do if something spills.

Aridane · 11/08/2017 15:37

I don't think I ever have cleaned my fridge. Occasionally I've mopped up spills and may have but the dewbins and shelves in the dishwasher but I don't think I've ever cleaned it.

Notmybag · 11/08/2017 15:42

Never. Didn't realise it was a 'thing' that needs doing

Aridane · 11/08/2017 15:48

Notmybag - you are my people Smile

jelliebelly · 11/08/2017 15:58

Throw away out of date/mouldy food weekly clean as in take shelves out etc once in a blue moon!

Papafran · 11/08/2017 16:02

Probably once a day. I feel so dirty and slovenly for not doing it more often but it's hard to fit it in what with washing and ironing my sheets daily too. I wash my towels at 400 degrees.

LoyaltyAndLobster · 11/08/2017 16:04

OCD sufferer here - everyday!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2017 16:07

Ha ha Papafran. I suppose your steam washing machine is a derivation of the steam mop?

You should patent your idea and find someone to invent it for you. I wonder if you could combine pressure cooker technology with a washing machine to generate the necessary high temperatures. No fear of germs on towels surviving 400 degrees, but perhaps include an irradiation plant to be sure Wink

Bodicea · 11/08/2017 16:15

Wow amazed at the people who do once a week. I generally stick a shelf in the dish washer when there is space and I need to do a dishwasher run before it's full maybe every couple of weeks and give the inside edges a quick spray when they look a bit manky maybe once a month!

AVY1 · 11/08/2017 16:24

Every week on kitchen deep clean day. It doesn't really take that long because I keep on top of it. Spray it over with all purpose, get shelvesvout, make sure water isn't pooling at the back.

I could leave it for every couple of months but it would be a significantly more disgusting job. (DH likes to hide empty big pots of yoghurt at the back for 'emergencies')

safariboot · 11/08/2017 16:40

Lucky if the fridge gets propery cleaned once a year. But then it doesn't seem to get very dirty for us. Odd bit of dirt and grime but nothing really nasty. We check everything's still good and remove anything that's past it before we put the next lot of shopping in, and pretty much everything's in packaging anyway with the fruit and veg being kept in the paper bags Tesco deliver it in.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 11/08/2017 16:41

I don't think I have cleaned it this year GrinEnvy

Llamacorn · 11/08/2017 16:43

Yup, every week here too before shop comes. I'd feel horrible putting any new food away before wiping it out and changing the liners etc.

Id like it pulled out more often and the back/underneath dusted and wipes but I'm unable to do that myself so it's only once I've asked dh for the 100th time is it done.

elQuintoConyo · 11/08/2017 16:54

The maid cleans it daily. Sometimes rhe nanny if she spills some if the dc's food. The gardener isn't allowed to touch it. We won't mention the driver.

Erm, I'd like to say once a month, however DH just cleaned it and judging from the sounds, it was probably a little bit longer. Hmm

fourquenelles · 11/08/2017 17:19

I wipe spills immediately and clean veg trays and shelves once a week along with the outside. However I was horrified the other day when I noticed black mould on and in the door seals of the freezer bit so I am going to be a bit more thorough from now on

HereBeFuckery · 11/08/2017 17:35

@MartinJD why would you refer to your cleaner as the 'help'? Do you seriously not see how offensive, snobby and unpleasant that is? Unless you have time travelled here from Pre-Civil War Deep South America, and are in fact a slave owner, you should not talk about people you employ like this.

Also, you don't need a sign off, this isn't Pistonheads. You sound peculiar having it on every post. Please stop, it's irritating.

HereBeFuckery · 11/08/2017 17:36

elQuint you said it much more funnily than me.

Pantryboy · 11/08/2017 17:37

once a week before shopping

mummymummums · 11/08/2017 18:50

Ok, so I'm quite average I think. Better than some but much worse than the weekly ones!
Freudiansharp I think you're right that I'm invited to fetch things from fridge as they know it's clean. Me on the other hand hosts a BBQ but insist that I'll get it all out/put away myself. Ha! Not tomorrow though because I did it today so I shall be sending people to my fridge oh so casually knowing there are no lurking horrors!

Anyone willing to post pics? Good or bad?

OP posts:
mummymummums · 11/08/2017 18:53

I'll start - fridge 1 and fridge 2 - both on good days. Costco shop done but Tesco awaited - camping fridge also plugged in

Ok, being honest it's the fridges that looked like mine (or oh joy, worse) that I'd really love to see Grin

Indoor fridge once or twice a week. Full deep clean, once a month.
Fridge in garage about once a month.
