to be so sad and shocked by the blatant racism and opposition in my home town?

I'm a member of a couple of facebook pages which relate to where I grow up. Planning permission has just been granted for a Muslim education centre in the premise of a popular pub which has now been sold on. There is one mosque in the town.
Someone took it upon themselves to letter 50 houses nearby with their own views and encouraging the local community to unite against it.
The facebook pages are also filled with hateful, racist rubbish. This is a small town in Scotland and I now live in a city so find it so sad that do many people are actually afraid. I have Muslim family members and it makes me afraid for them too. Some of the comments ate threatening.
I have spent all afternoon trying not to get into keyboard arguments with sone of these ignorant idiots but its so hard. I've also reported load of posts but facebook doesn't agree they should be removed! WTF!
Has anyone else experienced something similar in their home town?

Small town racists? Im shocked

Unfortunately yes, very similar experience (not FB though). You need to report to the police as someone did here, because it could be seen to be inciting racism.

In our case the letter seemed to be produced in a way that looked as it was semi-official, and came with a prepaid envelope to the local planning department.

It's not acceptable.

Totally agree, people thought it was from the council or an MP. It was anonymous.
I hope that once it is open people will stop being so narrow minded and actually try and learn sonething rather than be dismissive and afraid. If it was a Christian education centre I doubt there would be any issues.

Still dont know what you have to post on facebook to contravene their rules!
I've reported sexist, cruel and racist posts in the last few months and there only suggestions have been to block the person? Not remove their posts!

It is sad but unfortunately not shocking to me.

Notevilstepmother · 10/08/2017 19:02

It's horrible isn't it Flowers

A local club was bought by Muslims and they were going to be used as a local centre for them. Somebody set fire to it and it was burnt to the ground. Some people are very racist.

Sorry, I meant to say it was going to be used.
