To not invite the dog

My sil is annoyed because we have said she can't bring her dog to our house for a family BBQ with our very small children. She lives alone with dog. She says he's her family and she feels like we don't trust her.
He's very bouncy, springs on and off furniture etc not particularly obedient.
I'm just not keen on having a fairly boisterous dog around the kids/food/jumping around the house.

YANBU we have dogs and they ruin stuff 😂 I don't want to take my dog places I like to relax and not have to worry. We take them for a nice long walk before we go out and they love having a rest while we are out.
Some people just don't get it! X

Talon, what's wrong with taking the dog to the pub at lunchtime?

We often combine a country walk with a pub lunch. The dog just snoozes under the table until it's time to go.

Aridane, we have a small house and you have to go through the sitting room to get to the kitchen diner. Every time someone wants to go for a wee, or out to the garden, they have to go through the living room.

We used to have a baby gate in the doorway to keep the dog in one or other rooms, but no-one ever got the hang of shutting it behind them. The "little ones" (actually 10 and 8) pester the dog relentlessly, even when she wriggles into the tiniest, most inaccessible place.

And niece does ear-piercing screeching which the dog hates. When we're at MIL's, she goes up and hides in MIL's bedroom as soon as she hears them get out of the car.

The dog likes children and is very good with them, but she absolutely hates these two. She's never growled at them or anything, but gets as far away from them as she possibly can. Otoh, she adores DP's granddaughter, who is only 2, and will lie down or sit by her side to be stroked at every opportunity.

Oh dear - they really aren't a good mix, even with baby gates Sad

I'm a dog lover but she's being unreasonable, it's up to you who you have in your house and that includes furry guests

Mulch · 10/08/2017 19:09

Medci I take it you have a collie?

Medeci · 10/08/2017 20:50

...I take it you have a collie?

Mulch he's a rescue mutt, I did a Wisdom Panel DNA test which said mostly boxer and GSD, with some unidentifiable mixed breeds thrown in.
Dog doesn't believe the test and insists he's a collie Grin.

Our dog goes everywhere with us, - he's well behaved, doesn't smell too bad and mostly sleeps. If someone didn't want him visiting, I get that but unless we can find a dog sitter the chances are we won't be accepting the invite.

AnneGrommit · 10/08/2017 21:13

Lakielady I think it was more the concept that sitting in a pub on your own was a nicer treat than going to a party and also the way it was worded as though it was some kind of date/event for the person/their dog that was a bit weird about that comment.

Grin rescues make the best pets and herders
