To give up on plan to go to California because of Trump?

Planned a trip to San Diego in October half-term. Not yet booked or paid for. Quite excited about taking DS 1 (7) and ds2 (3) to Disney. Now thinking I can't possibly book it because of all this posturing between America and North Korea.

It's an expensive trip anyway and we were only really going at this time because of DH work trip.

AIBU to tell DH that we really can't book it after all? I don't want to get to October and find that this crisis is still rolling on. it seems a silly time to take a trip to California and am also asking dh not to go on the work trip.

Calm down. YABU.

HairyMcFairy16 · 09/08/2017 23:31

YABU to cancel. If the world breaks out into nuclear war who knows where will be "safe". It's so very unlikely to happen. Go live your life. It is all very upsetting but it is just posturing. The US would intercept anything headed it's way in a heartbeat and the entire Korean Peninsula would be toast in the next breathe. But California would be just fine.

It's no worse now than it has been in the past. Listen to the episode "Trump's Dangerous War of Words with North Korea" on the Financial Times Weekly podcast. It explains the situation far better than any mainstream media outlet.

We're not on the brink of a nuclear war, and we won't be anytime soon.

HairyMcFairy16 · 09/08/2017 23:36

It is however a very good distraction from what is really happening in Syria. They could only hope for posturing. China will step in they can't have this blowing up on their doorstep, literally.

ZenNudist · 09/08/2017 23:37

Its not booked yet. Ive lost enthusiasm.

Im not panicking and i dont need to calm down but i have some misgivings about the trip. Listening to US based people joke about building bomb shelters is spoiling it for me.

We aren't planning to travel to the US whilst Trump is in post, in part due to their iverweaning immigration checks - proposing thst travellers have to hand over social media log ins. Hmm

badbadhusky · 09/08/2017 23:38

Overweaning...

ZenNudist · 09/08/2017 23:39

This collection of opinions from experts is reasonably reassuring:

I did California last year from San Diego up to San Francisco taking in Yosemite

It was amazing and I wouldn't have even considered taking into account press reports or scaremongering. Just go - its amazing and you will love it. (a tip - stop for a night at Laguna beach) Enjoy !!

Maelstrop · 10/08/2017 00:16

Yabtu. How will it fife the you on a personal level? Let's not be ridiculous. Go and have a fabulous holiday and stop worrying.

OlennasWimple · 10/08/2017 00:17

I thought that you were putting plans to emigrate to CA on hold because of Trump (YWNBU), not put off a holiday and business travel because of him (YABU)...

CannucktheCrow · 10/08/2017 00:24

I wouldn't visit the states with Trump as President, but I wouldn't be overly concerned with the NK situation at the moment.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 00:44

How do you think US vs N Korea squaring up is going to affect your trip to Disney exactly? Confused

Cavender · 10/08/2017 00:51

I live in the US. I'm not building a bomb shelter, nor is anyone else I know.

EmmaC78 · 10/08/2017 00:51

I am just on my way back from three weeks in California now. I have been to the US numerous times previously and have noticed no difference pre or post Trump. Immigration checks etc were all as they were before. Go on holiday and enjoy yourself.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/08/2017 00:53

YABU. Go enjoy your holiday!
