To want to build a nuclear bunker in our garden.....

I'm genuinely contemplating it.

DH says isn't sure he wants to survive a nuclear war, and I think he thinks I'm joking, which - to be fair - I was when I said it on the day of Trump's inauguration.....

First of all its highly unlikely you could actually build a bunker that could survive a nuclear war, in your garden.
But even if you did, have you thought about what it would entail to survive it? No thanks from me.

pongoismyhero · 09/08/2017 16:19

It wouldn't protect you from the aftermath.

Better to just die on the spot IMO!

SerfTerf · 09/08/2017 16:19

What kind of size and spec?

Sounds like a big job.

VeryCunningStunt · 09/08/2017 16:19

I'm with you DH on this. I don't think I would want to survive a nuclear war, to be honest.

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 09/08/2017 16:19

Get a grip.

SerfTerf · 09/08/2017 16:20

Also, have you see Cloverfield Lane? 😱

peppep · 09/08/2017 16:20

Bad day Lola

I thought everyone had one?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/08/2017 16:23

Switzerland has a bunch of weird bunkers that they currently house homeless people in. You could move there.

But unless you can build one the size of a mansion, filled with modern luxuries and all your friends and family, why would you? I like Prepping but a nuclear strike? Tallest hill and hope it's quick. Try the Preppers board though. They'll help you out...

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 16:24

I have a shed, there might be some hacks out there on Pinterest.

I'm
With you, OP.

Youcanttaketheskyfromme · 09/08/2017 16:25

There's an old fallout shelter down be road from me. I've been eyeing it up for a while.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 16:25

The Swiss have private ones in every house. And they are required to keep tinned beans and chocolate for up to 6 months.

The future is Swiss. Everybody else will perish.

SmileEachDay · 09/08/2017 16:26

It never ends well for survivors. I know this because I've read books and seen films

I'm thinking going out with a bang, maybe gin and opiates, would be better?

peppep · 09/08/2017 16:28

Chardonnays amazing!

Smile another good suggestion. I might just stock up on Vodka.

MrMessy · 09/08/2017 16:29

My old NDN built one. The ground water kept seeping in though so I don't think it did it properly. He had to abandon it in the end.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 09/08/2017 16:32

Apparently in the event of a nuclear attack foreigners will not be allowed in Swiss bunkers. Read it on MN Grin

However I do love the idea of a government that requires you to keep stocks of chocolate.

SerfTerf · 09/08/2017 16:32

Tinned beans and chocolate? For six months? That's enough to put me off on its own.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/08/2017 16:36

@OhtoblazeswithElvira will they throw the homeless (many of whom are foreign) out to fit in the Swiss? Say what you like, the Swiss are seriously hardcore.

Confuzzlediddled · 09/08/2017 16:38

I now feel strangely reassured that the international scout camp my ds goes to on Friday is in Switzerland...

ofshoes · 09/08/2017 16:39

I don't think I can pull off the Mad Max scavanged S&M look so I'm happy enough to just go out with a first strike.

weegiemum · 09/08/2017 16:43

nuclear strike is my current can't-get-to-sleep scenario.

Even then I've decided dead in the blast is best.

I'm terrified about this north korea stuff.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 16:43

Best thing to stock up on is medicine.
I know because I've seen it on on Znation

LuLuuuuuuu · 09/08/2017 16:45

Don't do it OP

You ever read Legion ? 3rd of the rat trilogies. Poor sod built a bunker and he never got out due to debris on it .

Also, in the 80s, they scared the life out of us with the llikes of Threads . When the Wind Blows, The Day After etcetera . Nope, I'd want to die there and then .

Puddington · 09/08/2017 16:46

When The Wind Blows terrified me for life. In the event of nuclear war I'd just want to be obliterated on the spot.

Kursk · 09/08/2017 16:47

Sounds like a good project OP. If you are a fair distance (30miles) from a likely target it's actually going to be pretty easy to build.

The MN standard opinion is in the event of a nuclear attack then the UK will be in ruins and survival impossible, when in reality its not the case.

Basic preparation and measures can insure you survive.
