To want to build a nuclear bunker in our garden.....

peppep · 09/08/2017 16:17

I'm genuinely contemplating it.

DH says isn't sure he wants to survive a nuclear war, and I think he thinks I'm joking, which - to be fair - I was when I said it on the day of Trump's inauguration.....

That's the one Kursk

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 19:14

I read about Chernobyl. It's fascinating how well the wildlife there is doing.

Is human activity worse than radiation?

Kursk · 09/08/2017 19:19

We used to think that radiation was bad, end of. The more the worse.

In reality, radiation it a bit like UV from the sun, some is good, too much is bad.

So there is probably a cut off point where you could say radiation is better than human activity

Easilyflattered · 09/08/2017 19:30

Kursk

I'd find your DHs work genuinely fascinating! The chromosomes I saw were from a lady admitted to a London hospital in a very unwell state and whose case baffled staff until they found an interpreter.

I've since worked with Ukrainian lab staff who have given me their own accounts of the accident and the aftermath. Including one woman who claimed men were offered huge sums of money to help with the clean up, some did, and have since emigrated to Canada and still thrive. and you just think how? They must have been so exposed to radiation! The same colleague also said that no matter what, some of the older folk who farmed in the area, just point blank refused to leave regardless of the warnings.

Ginorchoc · 09/08/2017 19:35

You get the odd one for sale on Rightmove. You'd need a few years in hiding though not weeks Hmm

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 19:41

I'm thinking of commandeering a cruise ship and sailing off to Tasmania.

Haven't quite worked out the finer details yet, but will grow veggies in one of the swimming pools while using the water from the others for, well, watering.

upperlimit · 09/08/2017 19:45

Let's all move to NZ and share the mega bunkers recently bought (allegedly) by US moguls

How do bunkers fair in earthquakes?

CouldWouldaDidnt · 09/08/2017 19:49

What's with the Hmm face Ginorchoc?

I only said several weeks due to the Government issue Protect and Survive pamphlet my Mum kept from the 80's! It said to remain indoors for 2 weeks.

CouldWouldaDidnt · 09/08/2017 19:50

But Chardonnay Your plan is sounding better!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 19:52

If we had a big ship we wouldn't worry about earthquakes.

Somalian pirates might be a bit of a worry though.

upperlimit · 09/08/2017 19:59

Maybe a submarine?

They did ok in world war z, although it was not without problems.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 20:21

Not sure how commandeering a submarine from the Navy will work, but am willing to be persuaded.

I will keep an eye out for one on eBay *Chardonnay"

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 20:31

Deal.

We can advertise for a dentist, surgeon and hairdresser.

AuntSallyLovesWorzel · 09/08/2017 20:31

Got visions of Linda hamilton in Terminator 2 with her arsenal of weapons in a bunker in my head for some reason

Shenanagins · 09/08/2017 20:35

Thankfully we stay near a target so will be obliterated quite quickly. No way would I want me and my children to survive initially and then endure a long lingering death.

AndersArms · 09/08/2017 20:43

Also traumatised as a child by Children of The Dust. I still have a copy.

And as an adult, On The Beach stayed with me for a very long time.

We would be shit at survival so I would rather we were all wiped out together. Not sure I could endure my DC's slow and painful death from radiation.

MimsyFluff · 09/08/2017 20:57

I'm very good at woodwork, flat pack building, brickwork, plastering, archery, sewing and training dogs and DC. We would need well trained hunting dogs, enough new blood so they wouldn't be inbred and someone to train them Grin

For use of these skills I request safe passage for myself, DH, 3DC and 3 Ddogs.

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 09/08/2017 21:30

kursk - I'm coming to live with you!

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 09/08/2017 21:35

I never knew about raking the top few inches of soil away nor did I know about meat not being contaminated.

You learn something new every day!

We have a couple of guns (licenced) in the house; we have a cupboard that is prepped with basic essentials (DH is a prepper fan but doesn't practise it to the extent of the extremes plus he is a DoE gold award 'person'). I don't think we're in a blast zone but definitely suffer with fall out (we're in Yorkshire).

TBH I think I would want to live knowing it's that or die slowly from radiation poisoning.

But we all know nukes aren't going to drop. It' 'my bomb's bigger than your bomb' scenario and 'Dare you to strike first' 'I double dare ...' 'I triple dare...'. Seriously, it's playground games with a pair of buffoons.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/08/2017 21:41

The problem with scraping away the topsoil is that it is the topsoil and we need that to grow stuff!

BR62Y · 09/08/2017 21:57

Imagine being an Astronaut on the international space station with your Russian colleague. Watching all the bombs going off below and you have 6 months to go with zero hope of rescue.

Kursk · 09/08/2017 22:09

Keep some compost in sealed bags stashed around.

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall

The fall out from a bomb is basically going to be a thin layer of radioactive dust on everything. To survive all you need to do is make sure you keep things clean.

Take your shoes /outer clothes off outside, hose off your car, drive patio etc
