To think you can get a decent bottle of sparkling wine for £8? (recommendations sought)

I posted in 'Wine' but it's deader than a doornail in there, so posting here for traffic.

DH and I are paying for BIL's fizz toast at his forthcoming wedding. It's a big do, so we will need 48 bottles or so. DH and I have budgeted around £400, which works out at around £8 a bottle.

I told my friend about this, and she got all snooty and said we were being cheap not having 'proper' champagne. I am sure that an £80 bottle of fizz tastes wonderful, but DH and I don't have limitless cash. BIL is totally happy with what we have budgeted.

I said we would organise a tasting for BIL and his partner next weekend with 6-7 different bottles, so they can choose their favourite. Can you recommend me some fizz around this price for them to try please?

I love Aldi organic prosecco.

FooFighter99 · 08/08/2017 15:29

The Aldi prosecco in the gold bottle is so scrumptious!! I can highly recommend it 😊

Bemused I was once at a very expensive wedding where they served Krug - but it was warm Shock so I still don't know if I liked it or not!

OlennasWimple · 08/08/2017 15:35

Sainsburys Taste the Difference prosecco is decent (normally £10 ish but frequently on offer) and also comes in magnums

Lidl Cremant de Bourgogne is lovely - £7.99 a bottle. Closest thing to champagne on a budget

Tesco Finest "1531" Blanquette de Limoux is nice and dry, £9 but also often on offer (20% off when buying 6 etc). Nice shaped bottle!

This is awesome....: lovely and crisp and dry without giving you heartburn! 7.99 in Aldi, they have a rose too.

Aldi organic prosecco is lovely. I'm not a big fan of prosecco or any white wine for that matter, I react to something in it. My DSis gave me a bottle of this for my birthday and we shared it. No reaction to it and it was very drinkable.

Co op prosecco with yellow label. So good!! Can't wait to get a glass.

Asti martini is lovely too but not as strong.

DonaldStott · 08/08/2017 18:52

Another recommendation for the lidl cremant. Its delicious Wine

CV893 · 08/08/2017 18:54

I wouldn't overly worry. Do people really give a shit as weddings as long as it is drinkable.

Easilyflattered · 08/08/2017 18:58

When Morrison's put Frexienet (sp?) Cava on offer round Xmas time, that's my Merry Christmas right there. I love that stuff. I've had expensive champagne, it's wasted on me.

Rememberallball · 15/08/2017 13:20

Morrisons got Frexinet cava & rose cava 2 for £10 this week!!

wineusuallyhelps · 15/08/2017 13:22

M&S prosecco is £10 but regularly on offer for £8. I think it's really nice.

Also, same story for San Leo prosecco at Waitrose. Very drinkable, just wait till it's on offer!

Genghi · 15/08/2017 13:24

English sparkling wine is probably the best sparkling wine in my opinion. Can get some really good bottles from CostCo/Waitrose/Tesco.

acquiescence · 15/08/2017 13:26

The asda filipo sansovino prosecco is great, we had it our wedding. It is genuinely my favourite sparking wine. It costs around £8 a bottle but is frequently on offer for £6. Please do try it!

BayLeaves · 15/08/2017 13:28

I like the Sainsburys Prosecco.

callmeadoctor · 15/08/2017 13:41

Im a bit of a cava expert. The Aldi Cremante one is imo the best cava that you can buy and beats a lot of the champagnes easily. It is also not as sweet as Prosecco (which personally is too sweet for me). I would say that you cannot tell the difference between Aldi Cremante and champagne. Definitely buy it :-)

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 15/08/2017 13:42

I think that Aldi and Lidl score over Sainsbury's TTD and Tesco Finest by not having very obvious supermarket logos don't they. I know it's ridiculous and snobbish in a way but I wouldn't want obvious Tesco labels on my wedding day fizz if I could avoid it - it would need to be noticeably better/cheaper than the alternative to offset that. Ditto the Waitrose stuff, which is very heavily branded.

ToffeeSauce · 15/08/2017 13:43

If you did want to buy champagne M&S have 50% off their Louis Chaurey champagne with a buy 2 get 25% off deal starting today... I am a total champagne deal obsessive and have been waiting for it! Think it works out as about £9 a bottle - you'll find it on their website...

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 15/08/2017 13:48

Waitrose Brut Cava is very good. Usually around £6.99 but often knocked down to a fiver or 25% off if you buy in bulk. We had a lot of compliments when we served it at a cocktail party earlier this year.

fluffiphlox · 15/08/2017 13:51

How much is crémant d'Alsace in the U.K? That can be a nice alternative.
Also whoever was asking about South African fizz: what about Graham Beck?

Annebronte · 15/08/2017 14:01

Lindauer from Majestic is really excellent. It's very dry: I find most prosecco far too sweet and/or fruity.
