Really? It's after 10pm!

How bloody selfish and antisocial.

Those Military Tattoo bastards, giving everyone a free display every night. When I lived there - on Victoria Street so close - I loved it. And it was never past 10.15am. If you're raising children in the middle of the city, fireworks are only one of the noises you have to contend with.

At the weekend there's a midnight display too.

I actually adore fireworks, I just get annoyed with the tattoo because we are really close so we hear them, very clearly, but we can't actually see them! They're not as bad as the flypasts though, couple of years ago there was one every single night. We could at least see themGrin, but every window shook! Poor cats hated them.

And actually lostinshoebiz my house is otherwise incredibly quiet despite being smack in the middle of town. I love where I live 49 weeks of the year, but the festival is a pain in the ass at times.

I see your random weekend fireworks and raise you the Edinburgh Military Tattoo!

Used to live close enough to the castle to get a free fireworks display for the whole of August. I loved it.

Oh I love fireworks, too (though it took me many years to get over my fear of them, and I can still feel anxious if I can hear but not see them) but there's a time and a place. In the 2-3 weeks around 5 November, the Tattoo, publicised displays etc, you can be prepared for them. But randomly, late at night in a residential area - no.

I used to live next-door-but-one to a 'conference hotel'. Most of the time we didn't even know it was there. Throughout the summer, though, parties would regularly end with fireworks. 10 minutes barrage of utter noise. Not a display - everything at once. At any time of the night.

One time I woke in terror at 1am, thinking there was a gunfight going on. I know what gunfire sounds like. It was horrific.

Anyway, last night's 'display' lasted 23 minutes. Then the music started. Loudly. Within 10 minutes there were angry voices and shouting, and the music was turned down.
