Sold a very expensive designer item of clothing, think £300-£400 on eBay for £36. Buyer is no claiming its way too big and she wants a refund, even though the size is correct and I stated in my description that it's really big and could easily fit a size bigger. It's not my fault if it's too big for her. Arghhhhh

Just accept it as a return Hmm

Next time list it with photos including a tape measure alongside?

SloanePeterson · 04/08/2017 14:37

You don't have to refund for an item that doesn't fit. Decline the refund, but in future do make sure to put the measurements in the listing.

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 14:38

I emailed her the measurements before purchase

Some people do push their luck. Ask her to return it, at her expense and once you have received it you can organise the refund.
In future make sure that it very clear that you are a private seller and so you do not refund. Next time try selling the item at a reasonable buy it now price.

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 14:50

It was a buy it now for £36 which I think is very reasonable for a £300-£400 piece of designer clothing. So the consensus is I should take the refund then? I wouldn't mind as much except I really really needed that money this week which is why I sold it so cheap

I would be willing to bet she's trying it on. Make sure you have it in your hands (at her expense) before you refund.

BlondeB83 · 04/08/2017 14:53

Refund her once she has returned it. Ebay favours the buyer so if a claim was escalated she would likely get the refund anyway.

Fairenuff · 04/08/2017 14:53

I wouldn't refund. She's probably worn it anyway and is just being a CF. They're everywhere these days.

Note3 · 04/08/2017 14:54

Unfortunately you need to accept the return. However perhaps learn from my mistake and I now always put that I accept returns and the buyer must post at their expense. Otherwise you not only lose the money it cost to post it in the first place but also the cost of returning it to you. This way it does deter some ppl from returning needlessly

NicolasFlamel · 04/08/2017 14:57

Fairenuff you can't just not refund, especially on eBay. They tend to side with the buyer and will force the refund anyway. She'll just say its not as described.

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 15:00

But this is where I'm stuck because it is as described. The size is stated in the title and the description, and I have said it's very large fitting in the description and have copies of emails where she says the reason she wants a refund is because it's too big, so wouldn't I have a chance of winning it if she opened a case?

Only refund when you've received the item and it's in the same condition that you sent it in.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/08/2017 15:02

She's probably worn it anyway and is just being a CF.

This is what I think - got it to wear for a night out and now wants to return it.

You will have to refund, I think, but get it back first (at her expense, as others have said) AND CHECK IT VERY CAREFULLY FOR STAINS, DAMAGE, SMELLS e.g. cigarette smoke, perfume, food which would indicate not only that it has been worn, but also that you ill need to have it dry cleaned or even repaired - which you will deduct from her refund.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/08/2017 15:03

Cross post Jane

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/08/2017 15:04

You could contact e-bay yourself ands what they say about the refund policy.

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 15:05

OK that sounds great I think that is probably what she's done. So at least the cheeky mare won't be getting a full refund like she thinks if I can find any damage or obvious signs of wear

OP posts:
Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 15:05

I've already contacted them they said there's nothing they can do until she opens a case

hellswelshy · 04/08/2017 15:09

Yep agree - agree to refund ONCE ITEM IS RETURNED. I've had this a few times on a £2 children's items, stood my ground telling them to return it then I would refund. Suprisingly nobody returned the items....
Ebay is the worst for cheeky grasping individuals in my experience!!!

SloanePeterson · 04/08/2017 15:11

I sell a lot on eBay and have dealt with my share of cheeky fuckers. I still say you politely decline. I'd say she's trying her luck and won't bother opening a case as if she was serious she'd have opened one anyway. If she does open a case, the item not fitting is actually one of the options where you can decline anyway. I think eBay over the last few years have got themselves a rep of always siding with the buyer, but the last few times I've spoken with customer services over the phone common sense has always prevailed. And if she does leave negative feedback, you can have that removed. Don't reply to anymore messages. I'd say she'll drop it.

RainbowSnow · 04/08/2017 15:15

Did you put on the description that you accepted returns? I have bought a few items recently which said "returns not accepted" - in which case surely you can stand your ground? However, if you said you'd accept returns I think you probably will have to refund it if she returns it?

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 15:17

Nope I have no returns stated

OP posts:
Miserylovescompany2 · 04/08/2017 15:17

Has she opened a case against you? If she's opened a SNAD (significantly not as described) then you get to pay for her return postage as well as issuing a full refund.

If she hasn't opened a case? I'd accept the return, but she is responsible for returning using a signed for method and you'll refund on return.

Thing is she can open a PAYPAL case up to 180 days after...

Miserylovescompany2 · 04/08/2017 15:20

It makes no difference if you've stated no returns - SNAD overrides everything - it's an automated service!

Cookiesandcake · 04/08/2017 15:20

The thing is I'm a fair person. If it wasn't for the fact that I desperately needed the money then I would have refunded out of kindness even though its a pita and I've done nothing wrong. But when everything is described correctly and I need the money it's annoying that he's trying to get me to refund her

I had this with a pair of jeans I sold on Ebay. I gave all correct measurements etc in the pictures and listing. They also PM'd me for measurements constantly beforehand. They brought them and insisted they didn't fit, so my measurements were wrong. I explained that my measurements were correct as they could see the tape measure in the pictures. They then told me that my inside leg measurements were only designed for wear by a female and they were male, so I had to 'do something about it'Hmm I just said that I can't change the measurements, they were however, welcome to return if they needed to although I didn't usually do returns.

They didn't return - Other people have, including someone telling me a pair of shoes were the 'wrong size' (again showed the label, which included width measurements) as her foot was too wide, so they didn't fit her.

I know it's a nuisance, but Ebay do side with the buyer.
