Woman screaming at me like a banshee!

User998877 · 31/07/2017 17:06

Just been to pets at home to stock up, car park was very busy and as I pulled into park the woman in the car had the passenger car door open. I thought she was getting in so gave her some time. After a minute or so I asked her if she would close the door so I could fully park since there was a traffic building up behind me.

She muttered something about looking for something and got in her car. I waited for her to pull out and she started shouting at car who were pipping at her to wait. she got quite angry and I could hear her swearing. I'm watching in my wing mirror and she was getting very close to the rear of my car... then she crashed straight into my NEW car.

I jump out to see what damage she had done and she starts screaming at me that it wasn't her fault. I asked her who's fault it was then since my engine wasn't even on and she was the only car that was moving! She went crazy at this point and I though she was going to hit me. I calmly checked my car and there was some minor damage on the rear, more on hers since mine is a much bigger car. I got my phone out to take a picture of the damage and her number plate and she started screaming and crying at me.

At this point I got back in my car and she got in hers and drove off screaming around the car park.

Should I report her to the police, nobody was hurt but I'm pissed that she has damaged my new car that I only got 3 weeks ago, when I pointed this out to her she screamed that I was lucky I could afford a new car!

Here's my ques

I agree with Capatin and HeyRoly. If you have a half decent phone you should be able to email the photo to your insurance co and yes inform the police, its hit and run.

I don't believe you have to exchange insurance details at the scene, but you have to exchange names and addresses/contact details.

Twice I have witnessed hit and runs in car parks and both times I have been able to take the offending cars reg and leave a note on the other cars windscreen with my details so I can act as a witness. I don't think I'm a busy body, this type of thing just pisses me off.

Hi OP.

I think it's actually a legal requirement as you didn't swap details at the time. See:

www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/if-youre-in-an-accident

LadyPenelope68 · 31/07/2017 17:34

Contact the Police and your insurance company. Whether she's having a bad day or not, she can't behave like that, she's lefttthe scene of an accident.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 31/07/2017 17:38

If you report this to police (why the fuck do people suggest this, they will tell you to go to your insurers, it is not a police matter)

You dont think someone being verbally abusive to you to the stage you thought she was going to attack you is a police matter? Confused

Ameliablue · 31/07/2017 17:39

But you got into your car first and had taken her reg number so she may have thought you had all the details you wanted.

Willow2017 · 31/07/2017 17:41

As others said she left the scene of an accident which is an offence.

She was aggressive.
She damaged your car

Inform insurance and police. It could all have been settled easily by exchanging insurance details and names she chose to leg it.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 31/07/2017 17:47

I know this isn't an excuse and her behaviour was 100% wrong, but from what you've described with the crying I would assume she was having a bad day.I wouldn't phone the police unless you have to for insurance reasons

She broke the law, left the scene of an accident! Of course she needs reporting. Why should OP have to pay for her twattishness?

Cheby · 31/07/2017 17:47

Yes definitely call the police, don't wait until tomorrow. I think legally you have to as she didn't leave her details. For all you know she could be reporting it herself now with a different spin on things. The police can pull CCTV and your insurance co will want them to.

simon50 · 31/07/2017 17:49

Hygge .. You should have gone around and got some more quotes when you renewed !!
An extra £400 ? you must have lots of points or a bad accident history or drive a super car ?
Less than 3 yrs ago I was paying less than £500 for my 4.2 ltr XK Jaguar !
I had 2 non fault accidents within 6 weeks and my renewal on my Audi convertible was only around £275 and that was with my same insurer !

Groupie123 · 31/07/2017 17:49

Legally you have to call the police after an accident. Check your highway code. You will also be doing some other poor sod a favour - next time she'll probably attack someone.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/07/2017 17:57

simon50 I had the same thing happen to me, it's because there was a claim outstanding. Once the claim was settled my insurance went back down.

Questioningeverything · 31/07/2017 17:57

@ameliablue who cares that op got in her car?? She was scared that the lunatic was going to physically attack her! I'd have done the same. Lucky for op she took the photo of the license plate cause the mad woman was hardly amenable to sharing her insurance details🙄

Op I hope you're ok and reporting it now

Ceto · 31/07/2017 18:00

If you report this to police (why the fuck do people suggest this, they will tell you to go to your insurers, it is not a police matter)

Because the law says that if you're involved in an accident and don't give the other driver your details, you must report it to the police within 24 hours? There's nothing saying you're exempt if it wasn't your fault.

WildernessWhale · 31/07/2017 18:00

"If you don't exchange details at the scene, you must report the accident at a police station or to a police constable as soon as you can, and in any case within 24 hours"

From the AA. You need to call police.

Softkitty2 · 31/07/2017 18:02

Report her before she reports you

simon50 · 31/07/2017 18:04

PSPC. Of course you are right, I got both my excess back before the renewal (holds head in shame).

AnnieAnoniMouse · 31/07/2017 18:05

Gingerandgivingzerofucks
If you report this to police (why the fuck do people suggest this, they will tell you to go to your insurers, it is not a police matter) or insurance, be prepared to have to bring it up for the next five years and risk a rise in your premium. Similar happened to my DH whilst driving my car and I've only just been able to stop having to mention it.

You might want to acquaint yourself with the Highway Code.

The police will be interested. Well, they are around here anyway.

Iamstegosaurusthethird · 31/07/2017 18:05

I'm afraid you have to report it to the police. Something similar happened to my mum and my uncle whose a police officer told her that it is an offence not to report an accident so you could be in trouble if you don't. Also you don't know that she hasn't and is painting the picture the other way round ( hopefully she isn't but you never know)

FlyingElbows · 31/07/2017 18:06

The police were more than interested and very helpful when some total tosser ran in to my car and then set about attempting to intimidate me before making off. We did swap details and then he took up harassing me. The police couldn't have been more helpful and the insurance company did a great job too. Just go in to the local station and if they don't need to know they'll tell you, with far less scorn than your average mnetter!

londonrach · 31/07/2017 18:06

Report to police and insurance

Iamstegosaurusthethird · 31/07/2017 18:06

Ooh sorry cross post with others, that'll teach me not to rtft😀

Cakeorchocolate · 31/07/2017 18:08

Yes report her. That's a hit and run! Good thing you got her reg plate.

IDoDaChaCha · 31/07/2017 18:08

As others have said, report her to police and insurance. Just tell them everything that happened. She's a grown woman who needs to take responsibility for her behaviour.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/07/2017 18:10

No need simon, it only sticks in my mind as it was a very sore point! Some idiot forgot to put the handbrake on and rolled into my parked car in a hospital car park! Luckily he left his details (and the broken light stuck behind my windscreen wiper!) but it was a pain in the arsenal especially as I was due to go into hospital!

Hygge · 31/07/2017 18:12

Simon - I did get other quotes, and went with another insurer.

The one I was with agreed to send me a letter explaining the issue, and my new insurance company were happy to accept that letter and gave a more reasonable quote, but oddly my existing insurer couldn't do anything about it showing as an outstanding expense still to be returned on their own system.

I have no points and a perfectly normal car.

Thanks for that though.
