To feel massively pissed off by this? (Diet related!)

Last Sunday I started a diet. I have a stone to lose and aiming to lose 2 pounds a week. All week I have stuck to 1200 calories a day, cutting our refined carbs and sugar. I've been to the gym 4 times and been on 3 long walks.

I weighed myself tonight and have put on a pound. How can this even be possible?

AIBU to feel massively pissed off, give up on the diet and have a bar of chocolate?

Have you weighed all your food and logged everything? What's a typical day like?

cottagecheesequeen · 30/07/2017 22:11

Weigh in the morning, that's when I'm lightest.

feral · 30/07/2017 22:11

Is it approaching your time of the month?

I always put on a half a stone when I'm due as I bloat! It goes before the end.

V frustrating when dieting though !

AfunaMbatata · 30/07/2017 22:11

Due your period at all?

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 30/07/2017 22:12

Hormonal fluctuations? Have you upped your exercise level considerably? Muscle holds water as it repairs-I did a 10k recently and gained 4.5lb that I lost the week after.

GoingRogue · 30/07/2017 22:12

Well done on your healthy week! Can you pass some enthusiasm this way please?!

It always takes two weeks for any weight loss to show for me. Stick at it and you'll be rewarded next week for sure.

Also, measure yourself. You may lose inches but not as many pounds as you would expect/like.

crazyhairdontcare · 30/07/2017 22:12

Muscle weighs more than fat. Chuck out the scales and concentrate on how your clothes feel. I saw a picture of a woman recently who weighed more than before her health kick yet looked about two stone lighter.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 22:12

Is it almost shark week? Grin

FeckinCrutches · 30/07/2017 22:13

You will be 2lb lighter in the morning though, never weigh yourself at night!

VladmirsPoutine · 30/07/2017 22:14

The first and only rule of weighing in is to do it first thing in the morning after a piss and ideally a poo.

Otherwise, what is a typical day for you in terms of food?

delilahbucket · 30/07/2017 22:14

I always show a weight gain right before ovulation and again right before my period.
A week is not a long time to show anything significant, particularly when you don't have a lot of weight to lose.
Make sure you log everything that passes your lips including drinks and weigh/measure everything. Don't eat exercise calories (if you are using mfp). The weight will come off.

Allthewaves · 30/07/2017 22:14

Use Tape measure much better when exercising

DJBaggySmalls · 30/07/2017 22:14

When you exercise hard your muscles retain water. That wears off as you get fitter, so keep at it.

Teddy7878 · 30/07/2017 22:15

I'm 2 pounds heavier in the evening compared to first thing in the morning after I've been to the toilet

Violetcharlotte · 30/07/2017 22:15

Hmm... I'm due on Friday. Do you think it could be that?

Not upped my exercise that much, just one more class than I normally do.

I've been logging my food on MyFitness pal and weighing everything. So bloody tedious!

geekone · 30/07/2017 22:15

Did you measure your waist? Maybe you have lost but if the gym and walking is unusual you may also have put in muscle. Try to ignore scales and use tape measures.

Migraleve · 30/07/2017 22:17

Muscle weighs more than fat. Lol. It doesn't.

OP you will be retaining water, make sure you drink plenty to help flush it out. You have had a good week regardless of the scales so be positive about that.

gluteustothemaximus · 30/07/2017 22:17

Water retention from being due on I would say.

Don't lose heart. Also, only weigh yourself in the morning. Best naked and after a poo Grin

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 22:18

Yeah, I never lose weight the week before my period.

Also, go for empty weight in the morning. You'll be surprised how different it is, and it's easier to compare if you weigh yourself first thing before you eat, and do that every time

Intransige · 30/07/2017 22:18

It's only been a week. My weight can go up and down by 4-6 pounds over any given week due to (I assume) when I last ate, if I'm dehydrated, hormones etc.

Instead of assuming your weight is constant, weigh yourself as often as possible for a week (eg hourly) and chart it. It goes up and down all the time.

BeepBeepMOVE · 30/07/2017 22:18

Migra

Yes it does. A cubic foot of muscle weighs more than a cubic foot of fat.

Jellybean85 · 30/07/2017 22:19

Is it possible you're in starvation mode? That's a small number of calories for someone active. Would leave you with a deficit of at least 800 cs a day.

Google reverse dieting, I lost 8kg with it and have had friends have great success too Smile

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 30/07/2017 22:19

Migraleve you took the words right out of my mouth Grin

A pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh exactly the same - a pound. You have to really be going some training wise to gain muscle mass like that in a week.

Op-it'll be hormones. Don't let it get you down or dampen your enthusiasm.

FluffyMcCloud · 30/07/2017 22:20

This is exactly why I don't weigh myself. I have a healthy eating plan and when I stick to it I feel it has been a successful week. Weight loss is a long game, I honestly think weekly weigh ins are a terrible idea - for exactly the reason you have shown, you feel demoralised and like giving up, but maybe if you weighed yourself in 2 days, or 4 you'd see a loss. It's just not a cosy exact science.
Stick to your healthy eating and feel good that you have made positive changes. Don't weigh yourself if you think the numbers on the scale are going to make you feel bad!
I haven't weighed myself in months and I've no idea what I weigh but I stick to my diet plan and I notice the difference in my clothes and appearance. People have commented on my weight loss too recently. But I've no idea what I've lost or whether it is good/bad for how long I've been dieting etc...

FatGirlWithChocolate · 30/07/2017 22:21

Your weight can fluctuate massively just through water retention/ glycogen stored etc. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning ( I would do it every day until you can see the pattern and realise the fluctuations don't mean that you haven't lost). Keep going. It will happen.
