To feel massively pissed off by this? (Diet related!)

Last Sunday I started a diet. I have a stone to lose and aiming to lose 2 pounds a week. All week I have stuck to 1200 calories a day, cutting our refined carbs and sugar. I've been to the gym 4 times and been on 3 long walks.

I weighed myself tonight and have put on a pound. How can this even be possible?

AIBU to feel massively pissed off, give up on the diet and have a bar of chocolate?

Are you being purposefully dense?

Not half as much as you are being purposely nasty Hmm

ilovepixie · 30/07/2017 23:14

Google the whoosh effect. It's very interesting.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 23:18

Migraleve- you've just misunderstood it.

Muscle has a greater mass than fat.

Ilikecrocs · 30/07/2017 23:20

Weigh in the morning, every morning.
Take note of the weight but wait till end of full week and take the average.
Anything can make your weight fluctuate.
A high salt dinner for example could make you weigh more the next morning.

Migraleve · 30/07/2017 23:22

I haven't misunderstood anything.

Seriously. Someone said muscle weighs more than fat. It simply does not.

I am fully aware that by volume muscle weighs more. I am also fully aware we were discussing a pound. Which is weight, not volume, so therefore a pound of each weighs the same.

There is also no way on this earth that someone has built muscle mass like that in a week. It is likely to be water weight as many have said.

Ollivander84 · 30/07/2017 23:25

Weigh every day. I use weight diary app
The blue line is daily weight, yellow is the trend

But you are misunderstanding...

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 23:30

You said that muscle didn't weigh more than fat. That just incorrect.

Nobody was talking about a pound. Muscle is heavier than fat, which you've also just said.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 23:31

But yes, this isn't muscle mass. (or weight ;))

Nancy91 · 30/07/2017 23:41

OP, you probably have water retention.

Everyone else, the muscle / fat debate that is going on is irrelevant, she will not be gaining muscle on a caloric deficit, that's not how it works.

gamerchick · 30/07/2017 23:45

Keep the same thing up for another week and you'll see a loss the week after. Keep it up after that and you'll fly until you plateau.

BeepBeepMOVE · 31/07/2017 00:29

Migra

Everyone else was talking about mass you decided to bring in pound Vs pound and then ignore what everyone else was actually saying instead just LOLing at other poster.

Someone said muscle weighs more than fat. It simply does not.
This is simply incorrect when discussing mass/volume. You must clarify your statement for it to be true.

TheStoic · 31/07/2017 04:23

Oh dear. Muscle does weigh more than fat.

Oh dear, no it really doesn't.

Saying 'muscle weighs more than fat' is the same as saying 'apples weigh more than oranges'. Both are nonsensical.

If you mean that muscle is denser that fat - then say that.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 31/07/2017 04:48

You've been given some good advice but mine would be to weigh yourself less. I think once a week is the absolutely maximum but actually, 10 - 14 days is better as you see a pattern emerging. Also, measuring yourself in various places too is a good idea especially if you're exercising lots.

Hang in there!

P.S. I usually gain a couple of lbs pre period which falls off once I've started. Annoying but not true weight.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 31/07/2017 04:49

Oh and I just noticed the last bit, YANBU to be pissed off but it's really early days, so don't allow this to ruin the positive changes that you've started to make. You can do this. Smile

NewPapaGuinea · 31/07/2017 06:10

Cutting calories AND increasing energy expenditure is not gonna work long term. You want a small deficit in total daily energy expenditure (TDEE)

captainfunderpants · 31/07/2017 06:43

Keep going, be consistent and it will come off! I've lost 6 stone in the last 3 - 4 years and have seen a few fluctuations in that time, but the general trend has been downwards. You need to see the trend over a few weeks to get a true picture of weight loss, not daily or week by week. If I have a relaxed weekend and eat and drink whatever I like I can weigh up to 4 or 5 pounds heavier on a Monday than I did the week before. But by the following week I am back to the same (and when I was losing, could even have lost again).

Be realistic about the fact that you won't always have the willpower or the discipline to say no to things, and that you need to have a life, but if you are consistent over the longer term it won't make a difference. Just don't let it derail you or you'll never get there!

BifsWif · 31/07/2017 06:53

Do not give up. Just don't. You'll see a change soon, and potentially a big loss on the scales next week.

My first week with MFP - gained 2lb. I can only assume it was all the calories from the week before catching up. I lost 6lb the week after and continues to lose between 1 and 2lb a week afterwards. Keep going.

BifsWif · 31/07/2017 06:54

Also, that is very few calories if you're working out four times a week. What is your activity level set to?

Redglitter · 31/07/2017 06:55

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning rather than at night. Bet you see a difference

DecisionTree · 31/07/2017 06:58

Muscle DOES NOT weigh more than fat!

A pound is a pound ....

bumblingbovine49 · 31/07/2017 07:02

If you have been doing what you say and your period is due next week, look forward to a double loss next week😁

bumblingbovine49 · 31/07/2017 07:07

Weigh every day. Some days your weight will go up by a couple of pounds, some days down. It is really good to get used to not being hung up on daily fluctuations. Work out the average for that week and if you are doing what you say, you should see a loss every week regardless of daily fluctuations.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

Bifs I just checked my activity level and it's set to light. Do you think I should change to moderate?
