Posting for traffic. Positive test after miscarriage and unhelpful EPU

Had a medically managed miscarriage almost 3 weeks ago. Passed the sac within a few hours, then had spotting on and off. Never heavy. Tmi but it's just slimy blood.

Yesterday I had a clot, after the blood pretty much stopped all together. I rang them and they told me to do a pregnancy test.

I got a strong positive. The bleeding is pretty much nothing. I rang them back and the nurse who answered barely spoke English and told me to call back another time

What does this mean? Is it too early to be a new pregnancy? I passed the whole sac..

Could you have a molar pregnancy?
Maybe your GP would be more helpful than the EPU?

I saw a heartbeat and a fetus so it's unlikely

Sorry for your loss. Flowers

I would call the EPU again as they should get you in for a scan and blood tests to see if your hcg levels are rising as they should for a new pregnancy. I miscarried last month and got pregnant straightaway again but certainly not a strong positive - in fact, I think it took me three weeks to even ovulate. It sounds like there could well be some retained tissue so they may want to perform an ERPC.

Were you given methotrexate for your medical management? If so, I think you have to wait three months before conceiving again so you do need to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about at the EPU.

Thank you Owl

I'll ring them tomorrow

I don't know if this is helpful, but I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks, just before my first scan was due. I didn't want to have a scan afterwards because the idea was too upsetting for me, so I was asked to keep taking pregnancy tests and wasn't discharged until they came back negative - so they could be sure I didn't need a D&C. From memory this took at least a couple of weeks as the tests just identify hormone levels in your urine and the pregnancy hormones can hang around for a while. I think it is unlikely to be a new pregnancy, but is either just that some of the hormones are still present, or possibly that the miscarriage is not complete - and in which case you may need further scans or be asked to keep taking tests. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Could it have been twins and you are still carrying one - this has happened to 2 of my friends

Jace they did see a possible two sacs on the scan but only one fetus and heartbeat were ever found.

Is it possible that you were pregnant with twins and one survived? I'm pretty convinced that this happened to me with my 3rd pregnancy (1st baby). I'm not familiar with medically managed miscarriages, so please ignore if this is not possible.

Mumteedum · 29/07/2017 22:05

Jace.. That also happened to one of mine. Hospital took forever to confirm what had happened too.

DragonsandDungeons · 29/07/2017 22:05

I'm unsure if it's possible but I don't know. I did think I felt movements earlier but I don't see how they could've missed it.

I had an ectopic and was surgically removed as was the tube it was in, so no chance of anything being left behind, still had positive tests for more than 3 weeks after. Also had miscarriages and the longest the hormones stayed in my body was 5 weeks afterwards so I think it will still be from your loss xx

I had blazing positives 4 weeks after an ERPC

Scan showed no retained products

But bloods showed my hCG levels were twice as high as when I was 4 weeks pregnant

Serial bloods over the next 2 weeks showed hCG dropping at a snail's pace so I had a hysteroscopy

Tiny amount of retained products that wasn't visible on ultrasound was fished out

Retained products are not uncommon after medical management

I would go back to EPU and ask to be scanned

Good luck

Agree it sounds like retained placenta tissue. I used to work as a gynae nurse many moons ago.

Fits with passing clots since... did you have strong cramping at the time?

You need to be rescanned to check as tissue left behind can cause infection which left untreated could cause problems. EPU need to take you seriously. Can you self refer? Is it a clinic where you just turn up? (Some need GP referral)

Ps, fuzzyowl is right about methotrexate. Did they not give you any discharge information?!

I had positive tests for six weeks after an erpc. Missed miscarriage at around ten weeks.

Had blood tests done which did show decreasing hcg but it decreased slowly.

Sorry for your loss.

I had a missed miscarriage after my 13 week scan (scan showed 5 weeks foetus long since stopped developing). Medical management, tablets. I tested every day afterwards, because I didn't want to be in this position. It's years ago now, so I don't remember how long the positives continued - but I think it was 6-8 weeks. Not less than 6, anyway.

I was 9 weeks when I actually lost it but it died at 7. I rang the EPU back and they told me to do another test today and then ring them. Curiously, my test appears darker. DP is convinced I'm pregnant again but god knows how as I never completely stopped bleeding and it seems so soon. Attached new test for fresh eyes perusal. It is definitely darker isn't it

Definitely darker but that could be to do with concentration of urine - it's hard to know. Hopefully your EPU will agree that you need a scan to see what's going on - do let us know how you get on. Flowers for you.

Thank you. I'm hoping it's a new pregnancy but I really don't see how it could be. I mean technically yes it's possible but it just feels like it'd be TOO good...

I'm also nervous of surgery. God knows why, I've had 3 surgeries before, but I'm scared I'll wake up and they'll tell me I can't have another baby or something :/ ridiculous irrational fear.

This sounds like such a horribly emotional rollercoaster for you. After my mmc I also had positive tests for almost six weeks but after my last miscarrige, it was only for about a week or so.

If the scan is at all inconvenient (and if you are pregnant again, I think it is too soon to see anything) push for blood tests taken 48 hours apart to confirm whether your levels are rising or not.

If you do have to have an ERPC, it really is a quick and straightforward operation. I found the physically I recovered straightaway afterwards with no pain or issues.

Thinking of you. Flowers

DragonsandDungeons · 31/07/2017 10:42

I'm going to ask for that. I had them this time as they originally thought it was ectopic (it wasn't).

I think the scan is to check for retained placental tissue, but I'm unsure
