to read on my phone in the cinema?

Just that really, taking the kids to see Captain Underpants at the cinema this afternoon and am wondering if I can read a book using the kindle app on my phone? Or will the light annoy people? I would still have it turned off so it won't ring or anything.

My youngest is only 5 so I feel he's still a bit small to sit in the cinema without an adult while I sit in the cafe in the foyer, which would have been my number one choice.

Some of our funniest conversations were about how much I hated Alvin and the Chipmunks when he was an age where he loved them. I wouldn't have missed that for the world.

3luckystars · 29/07/2017 20:48

Oh I love the cinema!

beebee7 · 29/07/2017 23:18

I agree that the cinema is expensive and the food prices exorbitant, but I am close to someone who works there, and if I go in with them, I get in for free. (I go maybe every 6 to 8 weeks.) I also take a cereal bar, or mini pack of cheddars in, and a bottle of water, and never buy any food. (Except occasionally a latte from Starbucks in there!)

Also when I can, I go mid afternoon (like half two,) so it's not too packed.

Saysomething88 · 29/07/2017 23:37

Sit at the back. Brightness down. Black background.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 29/07/2017 23:39

Just back from the cinema for the first time this year and it was surprisingly pleasant! It helped that it was a small screen but there was no talking, no smelly food, nobody using a phone, no rustling or noise above people shifting in their seats every now and then.

And I got discount tickets through work. Result.

LilQueenie · 29/07/2017 23:41

why do think it would be ok when the announcement to turn off phones happens before every viewing?

ItsAMackerel · 30/07/2017 00:01

For anyone about to endure enjoy Captain Underpants here are some key phrases. You need to be able to repeat them ad infinitum and then laugh hysterically...

  1. Tralalalalalaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
  1. Uranus
  1. Poopypants

Once you have perfected these you can comfortably close your eyes in the cinema and snooze a little knowing that you will be able to engage comfortably in the post-movie conversation.

DownstairsMixUp · 30/07/2017 00:02

Yabu it would annoy people. I don't mind people clearly just answering a quick text in cinema but I would find it really distracting someone reading a book!

sunshineandrainbowsparkles · 30/07/2017 00:06

How can you expect a child to concentrate on the film if you're messing about on your phone? Also highly annoying and distracting for others. If you can't behave at the cinema, watch a DVD at home?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/07/2017 00:08

I paid 60 quid to take a bunch of tweens to the cinema today and would not have been impressed by phones being out. As it was, the rustling of sweetie wrappers drove me to distraction. I did manage a nap though.

Funnily enough, these kids are glued to their phones usually but they didn't even take them with them cos 'phones in the cinema isn't cool'.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 30/07/2017 00:18

Bribe a teen to take them. I bribe my eldest. I've avoided all manner of shockingly bad films this way. I sit in the foyer with a cuppa and a book and am thankful for the lack of crap films in my life.

In your shoes I'd probably download a decent show from iPlayer and borrow my daughterMs mega noise cancelling headphones.

MauiBrideWithLemonDrizzle · 30/07/2017 03:24

I wouldn't. The light will distract people and it is a poor example to set to your DC.

peonie83 · 30/07/2017 03:34

What a stupid post
Of course it will fucking annoy people

HerRoyalNotness · 30/07/2017 03:55

How did you enjoy it?

Since having DC3 and our multiplex uograding all the cinemas to those lounge chair types, I often fall asleep for 15-20mins in each movie. Sigh. If we go before lunch it's only $5, so I don't feel so bad about it.

Mollyboom · 30/07/2017 04:00

I've done it in a quiet cinema in the back row.

KittyWindbag · 30/07/2017 07:24

It is against the CODE OF CONDUCT.

also, I've heard capatain underpants is really good.

RandomDent · 30/07/2017 10:21

It really isn't good. ItsAMackerel has summed it up beautifully.

Nousernamefound · 30/07/2017 17:23

Yes. Cinema costs a small fortune for a family and someone sat with a light shining throughout is selfish and annoying. I would be the first person telling you to turn it off. Watch the film so you can chat to your child about it later or have a sleep, but don't annoy everyone else in there.

hks · 30/07/2017 17:31

The bright light on someone phone definately annoys me

GhostsToMonsoon · 30/07/2017 17:32

I actually quite enjoyed Captain Underpants Blush.

I wouldn't read on a phone in a dark theatre or cinema because it might be distracting to others (tempting prospect though it is).

irregularegular · 30/07/2017 17:38

It's supposed to be quite good. Both the FT and Guardian gave it 4 stars!

Don't read on your phone in the cinema.

Craigie · 30/07/2017 17:46

YABTU, and I'd ask cinema staff to kick you out. How fucking inconsiderate.

Starlight2345 · 30/07/2017 17:47

I saw it yesterday and I was the only one in the cinema with my DC..

TRalalaaaa...

Sparklyglitter · 30/07/2017 18:07

Light bloody annoying! Selfish! Don't do it!!!!

Chickoletta · 30/07/2017 18:07

So unreasonable!
