To ask my friend to contribute towards the fine?

A friend of mine asked my to drive her to a course in an area which I'm unfamiliar with, in a big city (I am a rural area driver) It was a struggle for me to get childcare but I eventually managed to take her.

I was using the sat nav and the sat nav told me to turn right, as soon as I turned right I was unsure as it looked liked it was a bus only section. I slowed down and my friend said it wasn't bus only and as the sat nav had told us to turn this way we were ok to drive down.

I've now received a fine through the post from a cctv camera and it was in fact a bus only section. I can't afford to pay the full fine. AIBU to ask her to pay half? She didn't offer me anything towards the petrol but paid for a coffee whilst I sat and waited for her

A bus fine is only £60 isn't it?
£30 if you pay within the first 14 days of receiving the PCN. And then £60 if after the 14 day period of receiving the PCN.

If somebody drove me somewhere and then asked me too pay for part of the fine I'd say bugger off, the only way I would pay is if I directed them down there. But then again there are always plenty of signage in regards of bus lanes and the usage of them.

If you get that nervous driving in a city or somewhere you don't know then you should NOT be driving it is both dangerous to you and others around you. I hate nervous and slow drivers they always panic

HungerOfThePine · 29/07/2017 13:47

I think as a friend I would feel partly responsible and pay half and if it's £30 within 14 days then it's not so bad.

Never rely too heavily on Satnav twice in the last week it's almost caught me out but I always check signage/rd conditions and in one case the rd only ever allows taxis and buses(which I knew) and would have had police on my ass within minutes if I had entered it.

AvoidingCallenetics · 29/07/2017 13:49

I do think she is getting far more out of this 'friendship' than you. If you are both not confident drivers, then why are you doing her driving?

Ellisandra · 29/07/2017 15:58

Neither of you are confident drivers, you were nervous and get flustered?

Stay off the bloody roads then!!!!!

Being in a car is one of the statistically dangerous things that we do, as drivers or passengers.

If you can't drive confidently, get some bloody lessons until you can. The pair of you Angry

You sound like a danger to others. Get some practice on quieter roads. The road signs are there for everyone to see.

Ravenqueen85 · 29/07/2017 17:51

Bath or Bristol. My BIL got caught in Bath

EBearhug · 29/07/2017 18:50

The road signs are there for everyone to see.

Can someone tell the councils and Highways Agency, or whoever is responsible for cutting back the trees and hedges on my route to work and back? They're currently barely visible to anyone. (Town centre ones are okay, as there are no trees to grow in front of signs.)

MinnieSprinkles · 29/07/2017 18:56

A decent friend would pay half

minionsrule · 29/07/2017 19:25

I think i would be ditching the friend tbh niw we know she can drive but chose not to Shock..... why would you agree to that?
Yy to comments about sat nav being a bit crap, just this week on holiday ours told us to turn left now.... not sure why it wanted us to drive into the River Dee Confused

Aeroflotgirl · 29/07/2017 20:00

I would certainly pay half the fine, as you were driving for her benefit. She shod, as a non driver if you were giving me a lift, I would.

SonicBoomBoom · 29/07/2017 20:00

Text her and tell her about the fine.

Legally, you're entirely responsible. But if I was your friend I'd feel morally responsible and I'd want to pay for the fine.
