Especially in relation to cleaning.

It started raining and I said to a colleague "oh no, and I've left my washing out" whilst being a little annoyed it wouldn't be dry by the time I got home.

She said, "oh dear now you have to wash it all again!"

Really? Is that the done thing? Do I have to rewash washing if it rains on it? I have never even considered doing this my whole life!

And I've got another friend who can't leave the washing in the machine for more than an hour before hanging it, if it's been longer than that she rewashes it.

I on the other hand can but the machine on at night and hang it in the morning. I've never noticed anything smelling.

Am I gross?

When I lived in London washing would have to be re-washed if it got rained on as it did get dirty. London is a fairly dirty place generally though (just try blowing your nose after a day spent walking around outside).

TabascoToastie · 28/07/2017 12:46

Rain water in London absolutely stinks sometimes. I've had to wash my hair after getting caught in torrential rain because it made my hair really smell.

ALLthedinosaurs · 28/07/2017 12:46

Our rain smells lovely and fresh (on the coast) so if it rains I just leave it to dry again and then sniff it lots.

If it's torrential I'll re-spin it.

Serialweightwatcher · 28/07/2017 12:47

I'd leave it to dry and not rewash it ... my neighbour leaves hers out all night probably because she forgets ... I wouldn't like clothes to have the sticky dew on them Confused

Beeziekn33ze · 28/07/2017 13:01

I didn't know dew was sticky, maybe it depends where you live!

Sgtmajormummy · 28/07/2017 13:07

With the wind in the right direction, I've had red Saharan sand come down in the rain. Shock
Not in the Uk of course but air polution is a factor.

I rinse, spin and hang out again.

The absolute waste of resources.

Welcome to Mumsnet laundry threads.

TsunamiOfShit · 28/07/2017 13:27

fine as long as it doesn't get darked on

Huh???

Liiinoo · 28/07/2017 13:34

Another who has never heard the phrase 'darked on' before.

I am constantly amazed at the work MNetters seem to make for themselves. Ironing tea towels, wiping down bathroom surfaces daily, vacuuming twice a day etc. And now rewashing clothes that have been rained on. I might do it if they have been hanging out for days getting damp and then part dry or if a bird pooed on them or if the line blew down and they got muddy but apart from that no way. But I generally tumble dry anyway.

Nickname0 · 28/07/2017 13:34

If it gets darked on or the unspeakable thing spiders do to our clothes ShockGrin then it gets washed again

Nickname0 · 28/07/2017 13:35

Op search darked on and you will find an abundance of threads with the horrors of clothes being darked on

I'm new to the phrase 'darked on' too - absolutely love it!

Lweji · 28/07/2017 13:47

With the wind in the right direction, I've had red Saharan sand come down in the rain.

Maybe once a year, if at all.

Even air pollution, unless you live somewhere really bad, it's not usually a problem.

cjt110 · 28/07/2017 13:54

I still dont get it Confused darked on is it a spider walks on your washing?

cjt110 · 28/07/2017 13:55

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... as in it gets left out overnight.... I'll get my coat

steppemum · 28/07/2017 13:56

darked on is a bit of a mumsnet joke

it means being left out overnight in the dark. Which is the epitome of being a slattern

But many mn are convinced that spiders crawl over their washing in the dark and do unspeakable things

MirandaWest · 28/07/2017 13:57

I'd just dry inside if there was a light shower, and spin it if it were heavier.

And I leave washing out overnight as well.

We are doomed.

redjoker · 28/07/2017 14:00

I would leave mine out all week and still take it in and not rewash- maybe im a skank but really..

apart from SPIDER WILLIES who cares?!

KrayKray00 · 28/07/2017 14:23

I have a crazy lady in the next street down, my house is a lot higher up and I can see into her garden. She hangs her washing out come wind, rain or shine, she has even put it out when it is snowing. She leaves it out over night and in storms (like one we had in my area yesterday).

It isn't like she forgets it is there either, I have watched her hang it out whilst it is raining pure fascination

My tumble dryer has broke and the weather is crap here, I have clothes hanging all round the house that won't seem to dry because the heating isn't on. So if I hang it outside it might dry quicker! I won't be doing that though because I am lazy.

Then again, I do prefer to watch her hang her washing out than I do watch her husband take a shower or shit, through their bathroom window whilst we are eating our tea...

BlueAutumnSkies · 28/07/2017 14:23

I feel slattern now Blush , I never rewash if it's a light drizzle, but the clothes smell fresh and you can smell the fabric softener still.

In summer I will put my washing out at 11pm and take it off the line first thing in the morning (it is warm, sunrise is so early I can get the clothes dried overnight) I can get loads more washing done that way, really important when the hubby has a filthy factory job... maybe I need to rethink this? Confused

No! I do this all the time, hang out before bed and bring in after work the next day. Maybe we are both disgusting but im with yoU!

dailydance · 28/07/2017 14:44

Depends how polluted your area is. I left out clothes on the line when I lived in sw London. Transpires it was a v polluted day and the rain was dirty-beige-brown 🤢 re-wash required.

AgentProvocateur · 28/07/2017 14:50

I always hang mine out at night if the next days going to be dry. And I leave it out till it's dry - regardless of how often it gets rained on.

paap1975 · 28/07/2017 14:52

I call it a fresh water rinse. If it got really soaked I would spin it in the washing machine, but not re-wash
