Why do people keep saying "I'd like some Advise" when they mean Advice.Angry
Seriously winds me up along with
Brought when they mean Bought and getting
Where we're were mixed up
Do people not bother with school or dictionaries anymore ?
If you're dyslexic or have SEN then my post is not aimed at you.

It is also it's, not its. Smile

MrsWooster · 26/07/2017 12:14

Noun / verb: Practice / practise, advice / advise. N comes before V, C comes before S. Well, it keeps it clear in my head!

Choirs sing

Choir = noun C so A Practice

Sing -= verb S so We Practise.

Learned at school many years ago.

God these threads are like an epidemic at the moment.

I find it more worrying that some people can't get their heads around the fact that different people have had varying levels of education, for various different reasons.

Every time a thread like this appears, I imagine it really puts some people off of posting for support, because they know their spelling/grammar will be looked down upon.

There's just no need for it on a parenting website that's designed to help/support people.

JoffreyBaratheon · 26/07/2017 12:25

Nah, I do't give a monkeys that people had crap educations. I went to a terrible comprehensive school so it's not an excuse.

Online, the most ignorant one that really pisses me off is when people are trying to write "queue" but write "que". wtf?

kissmethere · 26/07/2017 12:26

I'm glad pp pointed out the "its" as I couldn't be bothered, as I can't be bothered if someone is asking for advice and types "advise" I know what they mean so it's no issue.
Why so irritated OP?

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2017 12:32

I'm sure you don't give a monkey's Joffrey

However, I live in a very deprived area where domestic violence/poverty/addiction etc are absolutely rife.

My local Facebook group shows that a huge amount of people here have had a very low standard of education.

Sadly, I can't imagine many of them coming to Mumsnet for help/advice when so many of these threads keep popping up.

A lot of people have a poor standard of literacy and I think it's time other people got over it.

ArmySal · 26/07/2017 12:35

Good for you, seriously. Moaning about people who are asking for advice. Posters who start these types of threads piss me off more than poor spellers.

ArmySal · 26/07/2017 12:36

By 'these' I meant spelling/grammar threads. Not people asking for advice/advise.

ArmySal · 26/07/2017 12:41

There's just no need for it on a parenting website that's designed to help/support people.

Agreed Worra. I'm surprised they're allowed tbh.

DadDadDad · 26/07/2017 12:42

Well said, Worra, Army. I just don't get the lack of empathy as demonstrated by Joffrey's comments.

I'm a regular in Pedants' Corner, and accurate spelling and grammar is something I pay attention to in in my own writing , but I still can't get my head round people who are "really pissed off" because someone else misspells "queue". Confused Really?

I'm not going to use someone else's language errors on an informal forum guide my judgement of their character. I don't even think it's a reliable indicator of intelligence or education (sure, there's some correlation, but it's a skill like any other that some happen to be weak on).

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2017 12:43

'Not in the spirit of Mumsnet' comes to my mind, but apparently not to the minds of anyone at MNHQ, as they tend to leave these threads up.

DadDadDad · 26/07/2017 12:45

Oh dear, I missed out a word: "...to guide my judgement". I hope I didn't make anyone too angry with this terrible error. Grin

MaidOfStars · 26/07/2017 12:48

I always think that when an OP starts a thread attacking spelling or grammar, they should triple check their own before posting.

Otherwise you present numerous opportunities for others to shoot down lack of a necessary question mark, incorrect spelling of 'it's', and randomly capitalised words.

Not that I'd point that out Wink

VeryButchyRestingFace · 26/07/2017 13:05

The formatting and punctuation of the OP reads like a post-modern poem.

I may add it to my Pinterest collection. Smile

ArmySal · 26/07/2017 13:11

Haha, yes it does VeryButchyRestingFace Grin

DanHumphreyIsA · 26/07/2017 13:19

I don't really see why it matters, on a forum. If it's a formal text then fair enough. Seriously, who would get the dictionary out to post on mumsnet?

DoomGloomAndKaboom · 26/07/2017 13:26

Dear people who attack the grammar/spelling/punctuation skills of people on mn/twitter/fb etc: stop being a bellend - is your every uttered word part of a beautifully formed sentence? No? Then shush. Yes, it's irritating that there are people who think 'alot' is a word, but get over yourself.

Dear people who attack the grammar/spelling/punctuation skills of people who write for a living/are presenting you with their CV/who write public documents/ are replying to an email in an official capacity etc: you soooo have a point. I am with you. These people need to retake their English GCSE and endure several hours in the company of Piers Morgan as punishment.

I am irritated by loose for lose, breath for breathe and fucking "alot." I have learned to live with my irritation. Just. Even so, sometimes I'm a bellend, but I think we should all be aware of when we do it.

And yes, the 'it' was deliberate. I love a bit of irony.

ghostyslovesheets · 26/07/2017 13:26

do people who post this stuff have any clue on the impact it has on posters with sld's

GnoraBatty · 26/07/2017 13:29

I don't think it's just to do with education tbh, some people (I mean me) are just a bit crap at spaghetti.
When I worked in a school I really thought about what I put down on paper because I didn't want to get it wrong.
On MN I am not all that bothered, if I make a mistake I make a mistake.
I would rather be shit at spag than the sort of cunt that cares.

GnoraBatty · 26/07/2017 13:30

Ffs. I am crap with spag. My spaghetti is fine.

bloodymaria · 26/07/2017 13:30

Well, if we've got our judgey pants on today OP then you won't mind my tells Ng you that your punctuation is atrocious.

Doesn't really matter though, does it? In the grand scheme of things.

bloodymaria · 26/07/2017 13:31

FFS autocorrect is a dick! Always on these threads too Blush
