Why do people keep saying "I'd like some Advise" when they mean Advice.Angry
Seriously winds me up along with
Brought when they mean Bought and getting
Where we're were mixed up
Do people not bother with school or dictionaries anymore ?
If you're dyslexic or have SEN then my post is not aimed at you.

OP posts:
CauliflowerSqueeze · 26/07/2017 13:32

And it's "Apologies for that" not "apologises for that"

PleaseStopRaining · 26/07/2017 13:34

Name chance fail, OP? @DoomGloomAndKaboom

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2017 13:36

do people who post this stuff have any clue on the impact it has on posters with sld's

And just people who happen to be quite poor at literacy.

It doesn't detract from who they are or why they might come to MN for help, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to if I were them.

I'm really shit at maths, despite really trying my whole life to improve.

That has no bearing on my intelligence. I'm just lucky I don't need to be good at maths, to communicate on chat forums.

demirose87 · 26/07/2017 13:36

Made me laugh when someone spelt outfit "owt fit" on Gumtree. But the odd mistake doesn't bother me on mumsnet. But it did annoy me when I saw "chip's" and " jacket potatoe" written on a board outside a cafe.

JoffreyBaratheon · 26/07/2017 13:42

Trying to care.

No. Still don't care.

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2017 13:42

It's actually quite funny that I've just done a quick AS on the OP and it became abundantly clear, they have no idea how to correctly use an apostrophe Blush Grin

unevenpeppermintfootspray · 26/07/2017 13:44

It's pissed me right off that you've capitalised letters in the middle of your sentences.

unevenpeppermintfootspray · 26/07/2017 13:46

You also asked a question and didn't put a question mark on the end.

Glass houses and all that.

ArmySal · 26/07/2017 13:48

Apt username, Joffrey.

RebornSlippy · 26/07/2017 13:51

Shit, OP. Looking at your post you have no room to talk. Take your own advise. I mean advice.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 26/07/2017 13:55

Here you go op, I've got you some commas, apostrophes and a couple of question marks:

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

'''''''''''''''''''
??

This post is only aimed at those posters who start pedantic threads, to stoke their own superiority complex, while writing very poorly themselves Wink

DadDadDad · 26/07/2017 13:56

Apt username, Joffrey.

Army - I was wondering about that, but I reckon the actual Joffrey had more empathy! Hmm

JenziW · 26/07/2017 13:58

These things annoy me too. But not enough to create a thread about it. Maybe you need a break from the web op? 😯😁

midnightmisssuki · 26/07/2017 14:00

wow - this is not a very nice thread is it. A bit mean.

bridgetreilly · 26/07/2017 14:01

I think a lot of it can be blamed on people typing one handed on their phones which do very peculiar things to spelling and punctuation. Some people care more and will correct things, others are fine with mistakes so long as the meaning is more or less clear. And then there's those of us who are compelled to post again, correcting all the mistakes we didn't spaghetti notice, I mean notice!

SenecaFalls · 26/07/2017 14:07

There is a pedant's corner, you know.

Pedants' corner tends to be used by people who like to discuss language, not by people who like to correct others.

CoughLaughFart · 26/07/2017 14:13

I find it ironic that there's a thread running at the moment about foreign languages, where dozens of posters are claiming that British people are too lazy and arrogant to learn a second language. Yet dare to suggest people should be able to use their first language properly and everyone rushes to say it must be down to special needs or a failing of the education system.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 26/07/2017 14:18

Pedants' corner tends to be used by people who like to discuss language, not by people who like to correct others.

I disagree. Pedants' Corner for the pedants. Cunning Linguists for discussing language and words.

DadDadDad · 26/07/2017 14:28

everyone rushes to say it must be down to special needs or a failing of the education system.

Some of us on this thread did not rush to say any such thing.

Do you think that people who post looking for advice, sometimes on quite difficult or personal topics, should be ignored or banned (or what?) if they make spelling or grammar errors?

Honestly, even those who can use English "properly" make mistakes, and I certainly wouldn't assume it's due to special needs or poor education. It's an informal setting, who cares about the odd mistake?

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2017 14:32

Yet dare to suggest people should be able to use their first language properly and everyone rushes to say it must be down to special needs or a failing of the education system.

Nope, 'everyone' does not rush to say that.

The fact is, not everyone has the same levels/understanding of literacy. Therefore, it's pretty shit of people to keep starting threads like this, because it's very likely to put people off of coming to Mumsnet when they need help.

It's one thing being bugged by these things, but quite another to make people feel like shit.

SenecaFalls · 26/07/2017 14:39

Pedants' Corner for the pedants. Cunning Linguists for discussing language and words.

People who like talking about language post in both. Both tend to have a snark-free culture. People who like to display their supposedly superiority in SPAG start these threads in AIBU.

CoughLaughFart · 26/07/2017 14:50

The usual suspect is here I see...

thepatchworkcat · 26/07/2017 14:51

What WorraLiberty and others said. Threads like these are so elitist and judgemental. And I speak as a teacher and linguist. I find poor spelling and grammar annoying but I understand that for some people it's difficult and/or not always their priority.

DoomGloomAndKaboom · 26/07/2017 14:59

PleaseStopRaining

I'm not the OP.

To summarise my post: I dislike poor English in official communication, but I don't care as much when it's in a forum post. It's annoying but that's my problem.

So, I don't entirely agree with the OP, nor do I think it's clever to have a go at someone on a forum who misspells something because they are in a rush or aren't a good speller or something.

I thought the OP was referring to posts on the internet.

BlondeB83 · 26/07/2017 15:09

If you're going to post a thread like this I really think your original post should be grammatically correct! Why omit the question mark and full stop? Also, why the capital letters in the middle of sentences? Hmm
