to be upset about DS's first lost tooth?

Just got a call from DH - DS lost his first tooth today. They do not know where, probably in the street. So it is literally lost.

AIBU to feel very upset about it?

What do you mean 'what would you keep it for'?
What do people keep drawings, old flowers, cinema stubs, a lock of hair for...?
Not sure if I would keep all of them, but surely the first one?

PsychoPumpkin I had no idea I was so weird!

I keep my dc teeth, not sure why but I do.
Yanbu.
I would be upset too. It's one of those blameless accidents, no ones fault, I would still be upset though.

Eldest son. First tooth fell out in the swimming pool. Second tooth fell out when he was hit in the face at school, fell into snow. Third tooth came out in a Chinese restaurant and was swept up with spilled rice. Fourth tooth came out at school, teacher put it in a screw of paper and popped it in his cubby, I chose that day to clean out his cubby and accidentally threw it away...

Search for a 'lost tooth certificate' on t'internet if you want to print one off to leave under the pillow instead of the tooth itself. I also keep teeth.

missmapp · 25/07/2017 15:20

Ds2 lost / swallowed the first 5 teeth h lost- it was ages before he had one to put under the pillow. I have kept all lost teeth ( not sure why) but was quite happy with the 'lost ' teeth as it means I didn't have to remember to be the tooth fairy

CecilyP · 25/07/2017 15:22

Ds swallowed his first 2 lost teeth. And no there was no temptation to retrieve for the tooth fairy!

gwenneh · 25/07/2017 15:24

I swallowed my first tooth, while eating cheese at the grocery store.

I have my DS's first tooth, there was a spot in his keepsake book with a little envelope.

IamAporcupine · 25/07/2017 15:25

CotswoldStrife I was looking at those earlier, but they all seem to be certificates that the fairy leaves when she takes the lost tooth?

DD swallowed hers with her Shreddies Grin

sirfredfredgeorge · 25/07/2017 15:30

I always assumed everyone would like to keep the first lost tooth of their child?

Of course! We put it next to the first poo!

CatThiefKeith · 25/07/2017 15:31

You can't go round throwing children's teeth in the bin. Anyone could get hold of them. That's old magic

imamouseduh · 25/07/2017 15:36

Keep it???? Good god. That's minging.

chameleon71 · 25/07/2017 15:43

hilarious.

what exactly are people doing with all these teeth and assorted detritus?

Popskipiekin · 25/07/2017 15:57

Please tell me one of you out there has this to store them in? (eBay link)

InDubiousBattle · 25/07/2017 16:03

chameleon no idea what my grandma wanted them for but I was weirdly touched that she out bid the tooth fairy for them then kept them until she died!

scottishdiem · 25/07/2017 16:04

Keeping teeth?

What mawkish sentimentality is this now?

PsychoPumpkin · 25/07/2017 16:07

Me neither OP! My mum kept mine so I keep my kids. That's the only reason really.

No idea what I'll do when I've got the set Grin

pynk · 25/07/2017 16:07

I think you can be upset by it. It's up to you and you aren't doing anyone any harm.

Personally it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

What do people keep drawings, old flowers, cinema stubs, a lock of hair for...?

I have kept the odd drawing that the kids did and the odd memento but basically binned everything. I've got photos but literally never look at them.

vikingprincess81 · 25/07/2017 16:25

I've kept all my kids' teeth, does that make me weird??
Awww don't worry - you'll have loads more to keep. As long as the tooth fairy knows (and she does!) then it's all good Grin

IamAporcupine · 25/07/2017 17:00

scottishdiem - mawkish sentimentality my arse!
My late father kept a few of my teeth. He also kept a lock of hair from my lovely grandmother, which I still have.

Majora · 25/07/2017 17:14

Well, I'm very glad I kept my DDs teeth because it's one of few mementos I have of her now Hmm

Some people are dicks, honestly. There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep teeth. It's a bit weird, but they're not going to go gross or anything as long as they're clean.

Comparing them to poo is also very Hmm

My parents actually kept my teeth from an operation where I had like, 5 extracted because they were rotten as a reminder to look after my teeth. Sadly my teeth are just very weak and now I still have a bunch of fillings Grin

FooFighter99 · 25/07/2017 17:26

My mum's bought those keepsake boxes off Groupon to keep DD and DNephew's baby teeth in. I would have kept DD's anyway, but now they'll be in a proper box instead of a random place around the house.

YANBU btw

I understand where you're coming from, OP. DS1's first tooth was really wobbly for weeks. He was so excited that it was about to come out, especially as he was one of the last in his class to start losing teeth. One morning he was brushing his teeth when it came out and went straight down the plughole! Bless him, he was so upset and worried the tooth fairy wouldn't come.

Now he's at the age where he's losing his last back ones, and he thinks I am odd that I want to keep them. He chucked a couple in the bin at school and swallowed another by accident. I have the rest though. I have a box of mine that my mum gave me recently, they'd been gathering dust in her loft for decades.

isaulte · 25/07/2017 18:19

I've got a cardboard box containing scan pictures, a first-size babygro, hand print etc.etc (D'S is nearly 17). I found it and had a look in it the other day, and even I was a bit Shock at the full set of baby teeth (bar one he swallowed), envelope containing hair trimmings (first haircut) and... naval clamp.

Im not throwing them away, though. Grin
