To have allowed my 15yo a second ear piercing?

This won't change anything that's happened but just interested to hear a second opinion.

My DD is 15. She had her first ear piercing aged 13 and as an end of year treat I've allowed her a second one, which is just behind the regular piercing. IMO looks lovely and really suits her.

DD has been texting MIL this evening who is a stroppy interfering cow at the best of times and decided to send her a pic of her new piercing. MIL is disgusted and has been ranting on the phone to me about how 'unprofessional' it looks, how chavvy, how inappropriate it is for a girl of DD's age; the list goes on.

Of course I won't make DD remove the piercing now but just interested to hear the general opinion.

My grandmother told my sister and I that if any of her grandchildren got tattoos, she'd blatantly refuse to be seen in public with them.

So, I mean. You just can't win with some people.

She had the same attitude about piercings, but obviously weirdly got over it when I got a second piercing... and didn't notice when I took the piercing out permanently 3 months later.

If your DD asked her Gran if she liked the piercing then Gran can answer honestly that she doesn't.

YANBU - by the time I was your DD's age, I had three piercings in my ear. The only thing which stopped me from having more was the fact that each piercing was increasingly painful the further I went up my ear.

As with many PPs, I now work as a solicitor and although I now wear one pair of earrings, I don't think anyone would particularly care if I wore all three.

Your DD is old enough to make her own choices about her body.

ClopySow · 23/07/2017 08:20

I had 4 in one ear by the time i was 12

Brittbugs80 · 23/07/2017 08:42

I had my right ear pierced 4 times and my left pierced all the way round plus my right tragus.

My sister had the same but without the tragus. It was the 80's and 90's. I did it because I liked it but never asked parents and parents moaned about how it wasn't ladylike but didn't make me remove them. School never said anything either.

Two holes is not that bad. Now I don't wear any earrings and the holes have all closed!

Brittbugs80 · 23/07/2017 08:44

I also had my belly button pierced twice and two tattoos by the age of 16. I'm 36 now with no piercings and 5 tattoos and I've turned out ok!

SheSaidHeSaid · 23/07/2017 09:11

Your DD is old enough to look after the new piercing and there are far worse things she could do to herself than another small hole in each ear.

Hulababy · 23/07/2017 09:33

She's 15, plenty old enough to chose for herself.

Dd had her loved pierced at 11. She had her naval done at 13, and a helix at 14. She fancies a daith piercing next. She's technically not allowed them for school though (she had a helix one done but knows that it a teacher makes her remove it then she has too; most don't care and ignore it) and a daith is more obvious so we've advised her to wait til after GCSEs next summer now.

They're easily removable.

euphemia another poster mentioned her 16yr old nieces 'perfect' tattoo.

zinniazuri · 23/07/2017 10:29

I had my 2nd ones done at 15. Your MIL sounds a bit precious.

TheNightmanCometh · 23/07/2017 10:32

Two ear piercings is entirely mainstream these days, and has been for a couple of decades. This was last controversial in, what, the mid 90s?

HappyAxolotl · 23/07/2017 11:12

I have 3 piercings in each lobe, used to have a stud in my upper ear cartilage, had an antitragus piercing until the ball fell off the bar and it came out (I will get that one re-pierced at some point soon) and a tiny diamante nose stud. Oh and 4 piercings that don't show under clothing.

I've worked in various jobs with strict business dress codes and any comments I've had have been "ooh nice earrings!" My nose stud is so small most people don't notice it for a long time and then they like it when they do spot it!

Back in the 00s I used to take them out for interviews but nowadays no-one seems to mind. And why should they when jewellery worn on rather than in the body isn't a no-no in professional life?

Your daughter is going to be fine.

spidey66 · 23/07/2017 11:32

It's an ear piercing, not a tattoo. If she changes her mind about it, she can just stop wearing earrings and they'll close up.

I've got a second ear piercing but haven't used them for years.

sunshineunicorn · 23/07/2017 11:40

My dd's friend had her belly button done for her 13th birthday. Dd(13) has been badgering me ever since to have hers done along with her upper ear. I've not said no (but have said she has to save up and pay for it herself)
I have 3 piercings in each ear lobe, one helix and will be getting my tragus done this week. I also have a few visable tattoo. I work in a secondary school.
