To have allowed my 15yo a second ear piercing?

pizzagal · 20/07/2017 20:59

This won't change anything that's happened but just interested to hear a second opinion.

My DD is 15. She had her first ear piercing aged 13 and as an end of year treat I've allowed her a second one, which is just behind the regular piercing. IMO looks lovely and really suits her.

DD has been texting MIL this evening who is a stroppy interfering cow at the best of times and decided to send her a pic of her new piercing. MIL is disgusted and has been ranting on the phone to me about how 'unprofessional' it looks, how chavvy, how inappropriate it is for a girl of DD's age; the list goes on.

Of course I won't make DD remove the piercing now but just interested to hear the general opinion.

She's 15, it's only her earlobe (I know several people who got belly button piercings at that age), she will be able to choose to use one earring per ear should she ever encounter a situation where two earrings per ear somehow turn her into an unprofessional harlot Wink she can even choose to let the second piercing close up if she changes her mind.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 20/07/2017 22:03

Think your MIL needs to get a grip I have 2 ear piercings the side of one ear pierced and my nose pierced all done by my mum and sister I also have 4 tattoos. It's my body and my choice just like it's your DDs body and her choice.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/07/2017 22:04

My 15yo has 5 piercings plus a helix.
I took her to all the piercings and found somewhere that did cartridge piercing safely and hygeinecally (sp) with a needle.

She has some extra bits of precious metal (very ££ precious metal, DD prefers titanium as less reactive) but they haven't caused her brain to leak out of the holes Hmm........

Timetobookaholiday · 20/07/2017 22:04

When my DSis got her 2nd piercing at 18, which was a helix my DM said she would never be able to have a professional career, she's since been smashing all the glass ceilings in her career. Being a mum, has held her back more!

RubaDubMum89 · 20/07/2017 22:08

It's better for her to have it done with your approval imo. If she wanted it done she could have gone to some dodgy place that didn't check age without your consent.

By 15, I had 5 ear piercings (normal lobes which my gran - who raised me - consented to) second lobe piercing and top cartilage piercing she didn't consent to and a belly button piercing which she also didn't consent to (and didn't find out about until I was around 17!) Grin

uncoolnn · 20/07/2017 22:09

Wouldn't give it a second thought. I work in a professional environment and no one has ever batted an eyelid at my 4 ear piercings.

Chapterandverse · 20/07/2017 22:10

My 15 year old came home with her nose pierced a few weeks ago. It looks class!!

And my 16 year old niece got her first tattoo recently, it's perfect too.

Their body, their choice. My 12 year old ds got an ear pierced on the first day of his holidays.

My father in law accused him of being gay. The homophobic old bastard. (In fact it's dd that's 'probably' (her words) gay, but that will start ww3 with inlaws)

It's nobody's business.

RidingWindhorses · 20/07/2017 22:11

I had mine done at 15 without telling my mum to avoid this kind of reaction (I didnt but ha it was too late).

Just tell her she doesn't need to her own ears pieced twice if she doesn't like it, but what's your dd does is none of her business.

fessmess · 20/07/2017 22:13

My dd17 has two piercings in each ear, nose, belly and tongue. She didn't ask me about any of them and I was furious about the tongue. I think it looks chavvy.

thefutureisfemale · 20/07/2017 22:14

Not on piercings but my almost 15 year old brother asked for a scorpion necklace for his soon to be birthday ‭‭and got called a 'homo' @chapterandverse

Makes you feel slightly violent..

Dawndonnaagain · 20/07/2017 22:15

My 53 year old sister has two piercings in each ear. She heads up a large international finance company.

NeverGoOutOfStyle · 20/07/2017 22:15

I think she'd have fainted over me. At 15 I had two lobe piercings and got my nostril pierced! I don't think there's anything wrong with her having two lobe piercings at all!

gingergenius · 20/07/2017 22:17

Bloody hell at 14 I was piercing my own ears (although I appreciate that's not v helpful!)

heartknot · 20/07/2017 22:54

My DD (15) has just had a second piercing in one lobe and top cartilage in the other ear. She asked and was surprised and excited when I said yes. It looks great. I would much rather she did it with my support and get it done properly than get a botch job behind my back.
My mother does not approve but oh well!

sm40 · 20/07/2017 22:57

I got a 2nd piercing at 15. Still got a good degree and professional job!!!!

Mrsknackered · 20/07/2017 23:08

I'll PM you a picture of ears OP and get DD to send it to MIL later on in the week. I have 3 lobe piercings either side and a rook and tragus piercing. If my grandmothers reaction is anything to go by it'll be a laff.

GreenTulips · 20/07/2017 23:15

14 year old here with 6 piercings

Not a big deal

She asked and looks after them so no issues

faithinthesound · 20/07/2017 23:40

I have that exact same configuration of piercings (two in each ear). I keep small, nondescript studs in all four holes. Most people don't even notice unless I point it out.

Your MIL is BU.

PinkCrystal · 21/07/2017 00:06

Should have seen my mother in law when DD17 had her septum, nipples, belly, daith and tongue pierced

I didn't mind. They're only piercings. Ear ones are very minor. I had 3 in each ear by 13. Am not keep on the stretchy ones though.

MorbidBibliomancy · 21/07/2017 01:26

I have 13 piercings. (Two in my nose, one of which stays hidden, and the rest in my ears). I work in a professional environment. No one has batted an eyelid. I dress appropriately and do my job - that's all that's asked of me!

ManyManyShoes · 21/07/2017 01:29

I'm a bit of a pearl clutcher but think its fine. Now if it's tattoos...

Rubymay · 21/07/2017 02:10

My DD recently got a 2nd ear piercing & has the ends of her long hair blue, she looks beautifulSmile the blue will be gone for when she is back at school & only one piercing allowed for school and she is fine with that. Her grandparents are fine with it.

pinkyredrose · 23/07/2017 03:03

Who are these tattooists tattooing 15 and 16yr olds?! (Misses point of thread)

Gingersdohavesouls · 23/07/2017 04:13

Just be careful! I allowed my daughter to have her 2nd piercing and 6 weeks later she decided to STRETCH IT!!!!

hana32 · 23/07/2017 04:26

YANBU! Ignore her. There's no harm at all.

When I was 16 I got my lip pierced and my mum warned me off doing it saying it was unprofessional! I couldn't have cared a jot about that at that point and went on to get several more piercings in various places. She ended up being quite unbothered once she got used to it.

These days, while I don't have my lip pierced any more, I do still have several ear piercings and my tongue pierced - and I am a professional!
