AIBU to give my neighbours a cake.

Bumped into neighbours when shopping and mentioned I was getting ingredients to make a fruitcake for DB's birthday and she said her DH likes a fruitcake too.

In making the cake I have made three smaller cakes -one to post to DB, one for myself and DS (DH thinks fruitcakes are horrific) and I thought I could give them the other (smallest) cake.

Only I have no real reason to give them a cake. They have previously given us toys and clothes for DS and mentioned that they have more for us. (Their DGS is a couple of years older than DS).

So would it be weird to give them a fruitcake?

I love baking and making sweets and fudge. DS only likes plain fairy cakes or chocolate cake, DH will eat one slice of anything I cook and that's it. I regularly send DS round to our nice neighbours with three teenagers with slices of cake/bags of sweets and they love it! Stops me eating it all

There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving them a cake simply because it's a nice thing to do

You will have countless posters telling you that they wouldn't eat anything handmade under threat of death, but it's a lovely gesture and most people will appreciate.

The fact that they already gave you toys makes it even less weird (if that makes sense). It's a nice way to say thank you, with no pressure, and how it should be. So much kinder that posters who expect a cheque or a framed thank you the minute someone gives them something.

Not weird at all, just nice and neighbourly, it's not like you're going out of your way to make it specially for them, you're making fruitcake anyway and have enough to share.

It's nice, my DD makes random things for our neighbours all the time-latest being a ceramic lighthouse tea light holder!

I wouldn't think it weird if you drove cake to me (that's a hint by the way) so I doubt your neighbor would think it weird. I think they would quite like it

Do it! Nothing weird at all about it. 'I had some extra mixture and DH can't stand fruitcake, I thought yours might like it as it would be such a shame to waste it!'

Go for it, my DH has baking phases and some of those always and up next door (partly to get them away from my ever expanding belly).

We're not best mates with the neighbours but have a friendly relationship which is nice. They take in our parcels, we give them cake. Works nicely ☺

Thank you for all the responses. Fruitcake and neighbourliness will be heading their way tomorrow. Now to get DS2 to stop screaming "no no no" whenever we stop to chat.

That's lovely. They'll be over the moon. It's very thoughtful and neighbourly, especially if they've given you stuff.

Go for it - if you feel a bit odd just say to them "turns out I made too much and I wanted it to find a home that would eat it!"

My neighbour once turned up at my door with a big slice of cake. I still remember how happy I was.

I always share spare cake with my next door neighbour - allows me to bake without worrying about eating the whole lot to myself ;)

Not weird at all. After eight years living next to the neighbours from hell, we have moved and have delightful neighbours. If my baking was edible, I'd definitely bake them a random cake or two. Now I'm wondering what I could make that they might like....

Our neighbour used to knock on our back door and give us curries. We loved it! Especially when hungover

One of our neighbours gave us cake when we moved into our current house.

She is still my favourite neighbour.
