Ridiculous villa owner request

AIBU to suggest that being asked to bring your own bed linen to make up the holiday beds is not on? Is this common?

Depends on where, we regularly go to Sweden, they never provide bed linen or towels.

HipsterHunter · 20/07/2017 14:31

Yeah really common in France for some bizarre reason.

I wouldnt contemplate saying someone in the Uk that tried to charge for bed linen.

LiveLifeWithPassion · 20/07/2017 14:34

I think it's rubbish. I've rented property here I've had to pay a bit extra for linen.
Also, a property that has nothing for washing dishes or a bit of laundry detergent etc. I think it's rubbish.
I've also rented properties where they provided disgawashing and laundry stuff, a full pack of toilet rolls, basic cooking things like oil, salt and pepper, tea and coffee. It's amazing what a more comfortable and welcoming experience it is.

LiveLifeWithPassion · 20/07/2017 14:35

Wth is disgawasing?? Dish washing

TheFaerieQueene · 20/07/2017 14:37

I always take a new pillow and pillow case when going to a villa. I don't like using anyone else's pillow - makes me shudder. I take the pillow case home but leave the brand new, barely used pillow for the villa owners to add to their linen store.

EpoxyResin · 20/07/2017 14:38

This is completely normal for loads of UK accommodation; lodges, hostels, cottages, barns, it really is very common! In our twenties big groups of us friends would rent out various holiday lodges for birthdays etc. and this was always the case.

Topseyt · 20/07/2017 14:38

I have seen it occasionally, and would not book there. We always check carefully when booking.

You pay a lot for a decent villa, especially in peak season. I do leave things tidy and not dirty, but I do expect bed linen, towels and cleaning to be included in the often extortionate cost of having to go away during school holidays.

HipsterHunter · 20/07/2017 14:41

@EpoxyResin budget/basic hostels and barns... not so much nice vilers!

Lunde · 20/07/2017 14:43

I have always provided own linen and towels in Nordic rentals (Sweden, Denmark, Norway Finland) - although there is often an option to rent a linen pack

BarbaraofSeville · 20/07/2017 14:44

I think that's ridiculous. What if you don't have linen to fit their beds. The beds in the UK, Scandinavia and some parts of Contintal Europe are all different sizes so may not fit well.

I've only ever stayed in apartments not villas, but we've always had linen and towels and we don't stay in posh places.

I've known someone have to pay extra for electricity in Turkey, but that seemed like a bit of a scam. They said they were really careful but got hit with a bill of about £200 in a week. Apparently electricity in Turkey is very expensive. Hmm If it's anywhere near that price, it's not going to be affordable to the average local which is why it smelt of scam to me.

mozzarella22 · 20/07/2017 14:46

Thanks everyone, it is an expensive Villa in France booked through Owners Direct, not airbnb. We are taking the car / ferry so luggage is not a problem but I don't want to be making up beds on arrival. I've also just noted that they deduct 100 euros if we don't clean the property on departure! I'm so annoyed. I don't want to be doing house chores on holiday. I wouldn't have booked it if I'd known.

NotWeavingButDarning · 20/07/2017 14:47

Ime this is somewhat common in Europe and not uncommon in certain parts of the US, but it 100% stops me booking.

ArcheryAnnie · 20/07/2017 14:49

It's common in static caravans, and in camps like Pontins, but not in an actual villa.

skyzumarubble · 20/07/2017 14:49

It's not uncommon.

thereallochnessmonster · 20/07/2017 14:49

Owners Direct do this, sadly - they know you won't be able to take your own linen so you HAVE to rent theirs. And I've seen the cleaning cost with OD too. It's crap.

Some holiday cottages in the Hebrides charge for bed linen - Mull, Skye - which is fair enough. They're remote, and you're more likely to be going with a car.

puddingpen · 20/07/2017 14:50

Yeah, I think the French 'gites' are a lot more ingrained in culture than holiday cottages/ villas elsewhere. Nowadays most of them will provide linen for an extra fee (although sometimes linen is folded on unmade beds). It's quite normal to have to clean on departure though.

Sorry.

terrylene · 20/07/2017 14:52

Used to be like this when I was a child. I remember my mother sweeping and cleaning out one place for ages before we could leave (private arrangement - not a lot of agencies doing it then, and no hoover)

I have had it for eurocamp caravans before.

Not my idea of a holiday.

japonicaleaf · 20/07/2017 14:55

Very odd yes. As people have said, it would not be good if you were going by train, as linen weighs a ton!

Very common in France.

You have to pay extra for sheets. And pay extra if you don't want to do your own cleaning at the end.

We always take our own sheets and DH always insists on not paying for cleaning so he does it at the end of the holiday Smile It's never very dirty as we usually stay for 2 weeks and regularly hoover up sand during the stay so the last bit is just a whip round.

I've just stayed in the UK where cleaning was included. Except that it wasn't done very well and within 24 hours DH had a huge allergic reaction to all the animal fur that was lying around and we had to hoover ourselves...with a hoover that didn't work so had to ask the owners for one that did. Not that was annoying

Just see it as part of the price for the holiday. Or take your own/do your own cleaning and you get a cheaper holiday.

haggisaggis · 20/07/2017 14:58

Fairly common in New England I think. We rented a property there for 10 years and we had to ask the owners to supply - which they did Downside was we were expected to strip and wash the bedding / towels before we left (usual check out time was 10am!) We did do this though as they were really nice people and we got to know them well. One other property there refused to supply at all and I ended up buying cheap bedding sets & towels from Walmart and binning after use.
Have to say that every place we have rented whether in UK or US has required that we at least strip the beds before we leave - and we usually wipe down worktops & toilets and do a quick vacuum.

Flumpernickel · 20/07/2017 14:58

Pudding, 'cleaning' on departure normal? what even at £1550 for 4 people in the uk, out of season?

Tidying yes, not leaving a shithole (dirty plates etc) yes, but actual cleaning? Stripping beds, towels in the wash, hoover round etc?

MrsMarigold · 20/07/2017 15:00

Yes, and often the bed linen they rent you is very poor quality - we stayed somewhere on Air Bnb and it was bobbly polyester,

Treesinbloom · 20/07/2017 15:00

Yes a proper clean.

You strip the beds (especially if it's your linen!) and clean surfaces, floors and bathrooms.

It really isn't that dirty and saves about 80 euros (from memory)

MsHarry · 20/07/2017 15:01

No way!
