£350-400k for the last financial year.

He has ONE facial expression!

OP posts:
LilaBard · 19/07/2017 19:11

Can I just say I am personally horrified Hugh Quarshie does not get as much money. Ric Griffin easily as iconic as Charlie Fairhead!

MrsPorth · 19/07/2017 19:24

I'm deeply disappointed by the gender gap. I'm surprised and a bit resentful that a one-trick pony actor is earning so much. Ditto Steve Wright, who was fresh in the 1980s but shouldn't be on the air now.

One thing I would say is that a lot of them achieved their success on their own. There aren't that many silver-spoons on the list. Am I clutching at straws?

hollyisalovelyname · 19/07/2017 19:39

My thought exactly OP
'........he has one facial expression'
The worst actor ever, imho.
And I've seen bad acting.
Any Fair City ( Irish soap) viewers out there ? Smile

WashingMatilda · 19/07/2017 19:41

Haven't RTFT but I need to say Charlie is honestly one of the worst actors I've ever seen. Growing up mid 90's my mum once pointed out that he never looked the other actors in the eye and I've never stopped seeing it ever since!
Shocking.

derxa · 19/07/2017 19:45

Jeremy Vine. What a twat.

Tillymintsmama · 19/07/2017 19:50

It's all obscene. Compared with public sector workers who actually do something that means something!!!

Tillymintsmama · 19/07/2017 19:51

P.S I'm really glad that I have stated I do not need a TV licence because I do not watch live TV even though it's a complete lie

Theworldisfullofidiots · 19/07/2017 19:51

I agree with the guy from sky on Radio 4 today. If we are going to do thirtieth the BBC we should be like Norway and Sweden. Everyone should publish their tax returns and you could know what everyone earns.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 19/07/2017 19:51

The gobbledegook is
With the bbc

GetafixTheDruid · 19/07/2017 20:00

Anyone explain why Matt Baker earns so much more than Alex Jones on the One Show? Don't they do EXACTLY the same job?!

eggsandwich · 19/07/2017 20:00

My first thought was that Claire balding is way under paid, infact they taking the piss, I wouldn't be surprised if she either gets a pay increase or gets a better offer from another channel.
Chris Evans blimey he must have a good agent the load of rubbish he does.
Nick Knowles I actually think he's a good presenter and does get involved in diy sos so think he's worth the money.

ginghambox · 19/07/2017 20:03

Matt dull as fuck Baker does countryfile, gymnasics and other stuff.

BoysofMelody · 19/07/2017 20:06

Doesn't Matter Barker present Countryfile as well though?

I am surprised the Tory party aren't making a contribution to Laura Kunnsberg and Andrew Neil's salaries, given they provide the Tory party with non stop propaganda. Mind you it was worth Kunnsberg's salary to see her trying and failing not to look devistated as the Tories lost their majority.

GetafixTheDruid · 19/07/2017 20:07

Oh, fair enough, I'd forgotten about country file etc.

BoysofMelody · 19/07/2017 20:10

My first thought was that Claire balding is way under paid, infact they taking the piss, I wouldn't be surprised if she either gets a pay increase or gets a better offer from another channel.

Balding is a freelancer and does a lot of work for Channel 4 and BT sport. In fact she is probably on Channel 4 more than the BBC so her payment from the BBC reflects this.

WormwooodScrubbed · 19/07/2017 20:12

Matter Barker lol

I can't believe that David Dimbleby doesn't get paid more than £150K when Chris Evans is getting more than £2.2M

Like has been said about others on the list though, it's because they are paid by production companies so will get more but it isn't being disclosed. That's why David Attenborough and other obvious absentees aren't listed.
Someone upthread mentioned Alan Shearer and it does seem like a crazy amount but you need people who know what they're talking about for things like football and that means ex-players of his standard - who inevitably come at a price

SingaSong12 · 19/07/2017 20:51

I mostly watch the BBC so do get value for the tv licence. I think the figures are skewed because they only include the people paid directly by the BBC but a lot of programmes are now privately made - for example I expected David Attenborough to be there. The gender gap is really bad.

I had a look at viewing figures for the BBC. Consistent high figures seem to be Eastenders and the news. Countryfile and casualty are also very popular. Otherwise the programmes vary (because they are shorter series like Poldark or bake off creme de la creme. I'm not a fan of Chris Evans but he is very popular on the Radio.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 19/07/2017 20:54

I am more horrified about Ian Beale!!

£200,000 to £250,000 for that shite for the last 50 years?!

Hmm
Cary2012 · 19/07/2017 21:21

Woodentop Charlie, who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. I've seen shop dummies with more expression. So he earns mega bucks for a lousy portrayal of an NHS nurse.

And NHS nurses earn diddly squit.

muchomo · 19/07/2017 22:36

Thank GodI no longer pay TV licence

EBearhug · 20/07/2017 01:27

It's difficult to really compare without more details - X was paid this much in the last financial year, and that covered these programmes... In the Casualty actor's case, I would guess that that is his only income, whereas others do a variety of presenting and acting jobs, including with other companies, and also advertising jobs, Christmas pantos, Strictly appearances and so on. So if you looked at what he gets per appearance, it might not be as much as others, but it is a good, steady job, working most weeks... It still does seem quite a lot for that, but as I say, difficult to be sure without the fuller details. And we also don't have any context of what other broadcasting companies pay.

Having said that, there is clearly a gender gap, and I care more about that than individuals. Even if it could be explained by a particular presenter doing more hours (which I mostly don't think it can be), then you'd have to ask why women don't get the same opportunities in terms of how much screen time they get.

I agree with the post above that said we should publish all tax returns. I've asked about pay in the past, and been told, "it's a sackable offence to discuss pay." Even if that's no longer true, it's still the culture, and while there is so much secrecy round pay, the gender gap will flourish, which as a general rule, only benefits white men.

SerfTerf · 20/07/2017 01:30

Andrew Neil is paid less than Claudia Winkleman

Yes, that's SO wrong it's almost impressive levels of crap management.

Why do the BBC have to try to be ITV anyway?

Wingedharpy · 20/07/2017 02:07

I remember reading an article in a magazine some years ago.
It was an interview with Cathy Shipton (Duffy) from Casualty and she said, words to the effect of,
how crazy is it that I get a salary of about 10 times the salary of a Nurse, and I'm just pretending to be one.

derxa · 20/07/2017 06:37

Someone upthread mentioned Alan Shearer and it does seem like a crazy amount but you need people who know what they're talking about for things like football and that means ex-players of his standard - who inevitably come at a price One of the most boring pundits of all time. DH presses mute when he starts to talk. He's the master of the bleeding obvious.

coconuttella · 20/07/2017 06:55

I disagree... I don't believe you need to have been a top player for your country to be an outstanding football pundit or presenter. I'm sure the BBC could get an excellent MoD presenter in the £400-500k range (i.e. like other top presenters) and save a £1m+ on what they currently pay Gary Linekar (good as he might be) who presumably commands such a rate simply because he is a household name.

The BBC insist they are paying these rates for 'talent', but in the case of MOTD they are paying far more for name recognition which i believe is an unnecessary waste.
