AIBU to be totally shocked by this?

I honestly thought it was much, much lower. Government target announced today is to get it down to 6%.

it's 100% fucking wrong and you can continue to justify it however you want. Maybe I am a cunt, or maybe I'm pregnant with twins and actually give a shit about my unborn babies,

You assume smokers don't give a shit about their babies.

I very much gave a shit about mine. My priority was to keep him and me alive. Being able to quit would have been awesome but under the circumstances keeping myself alive so he could actually be born was the most important thing.

Smoking in pregnancy is horrible, no doubt about it. Put yourself in other's shoes and you might see why it is almost impossible for some people to quit entirely.

Blossomflowers · 19/07/2017 11:59

If you want to quit you quit, no one is calling you a c**t, you sound rather delightful not. I have been a smoker an totally understand how hard it it but is called will power. smoking whilst pregnant is poisoning your baby fact

Blossomflowers · 19/07/2017 12:02

U2 so you are saying smoking keep you alive, stop being rediculous and get help, there plenty out there if you choose to seek it

It isn't ridiculous. I was mentally unwell and suicidal. I could barely eat.

It took all my energy to keep myself alive. Cutting down was all I could manage. I don't need help now. This was years and years ago. I no longer smoke. I didn't have the strength to deal with an addiction at that time when I could barely function. I am human. It's a shame I opened up to be met with someone who spent less than a few seconds thinking about what I wrote.

Try actually reading my posts at least.

Sallystyle · 19/07/2017 12:18

f you want to quit you quit, no one is calling you a ct, you sound rather delightful not.

Who is this even aimed at?

16middlenames · 19/07/2017 12:33

@Blossomflowers actually @RyanStartedTheFire called me a cunt.

What a stupid question RE antidepressants- these are prescribed by a doctor! Cigarettes are not.

Sorry misunderstood the c**t thing.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 19/07/2017 13:17

A lot still smoke. It's not ideal. But they are trying so hard for their babies. So we go for harm minimisation. I do wonder if posters on MN sometimes forget the realities for other women.

Absolutely.

Emmeline123 · 19/07/2017 14:26

@16middlenames

I asked the question because I was genuinely wondering about your position. Your previous sweeping statement re women taking things that might cause a risk to the baby would include anti-depressants. If the question was stupid then it is only because your statement was stupid.

Madonna9 · 19/07/2017 15:03

I am shocked the rate is so high. I felt an incredible need to protect the baby inside of me when I was pregnant. Can't imagine drinking or smoking during a pregnancy..
However, the nurses in the hospital said they see babies born with addictions to all kinds of substances, sadly...

Summerisdone · 19/07/2017 15:12

I'm truly not surprised at how many smoke during pregnancy. It is a very addictive and nasty habit, as I know personally.

I knew all well how bad it can be for my undone child when I was pregnant three years ago, so I stopped as soon as I found out I was.
I would be lying if I said it was easy; the first month of stopping I would become very snappy with people for no reason and I would be in tears some days as all I wanted was a cigarette. Many of those days I even considered having a cig, but I knew that meant buying some and then it would be too easy to smoke the pack rather than stick to just the one, I would later hate myself for even considering it though.

Even after I got through that first horrific month, I still found myself wanting a cig occasionally through the rest of the pregnancy, and then a few weeks after I had DS I stupidly thought just one wouldn't do me any harm and now I'm back to smoking regularly and hating myself every time I try to quit again as I keep failing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2017 16:12

How do people manage to effectively raise children without empathy? Maybe they don't. Clearly U2 and others who smoked during pregnancy have it. Others seem to entirely lack it.

vlooby · 19/07/2017 16:12

TBH I struggle to understand why people smoke when not pregnant so yes, find that pretty shocking and saddening.

Sallystyle · 19/07/2017 16:13

Oh I see where you got that from.

My priority was keeping alive. Forcing myself to eat and drink. Forcing myself to go outside to my ante-natal appointments and therapy was my priority. I didn't have enough strength left to quit smoking completely.

But anyway, I'm not going to discuss it with you anymore. Someone who calls me a selfish cunt because I was mentally ill and couldn't cope with quitting smoking isn't someone who is worthy of a discussion with.

RyanStartedTheFire · 19/07/2017 16:16

They're not looking for a discussion anyway U2. They don't want to discuss what reasons there are behind why women smoke during pregnancy to try and lower the numbers and address the problem, they just want a stick to beat people with.

Sallystyle · 19/07/2017 16:18

Yes that is very true Ryan

I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2017 16:19

I hope some of the people who are so OUTRAGED and want us to THINK OF THE CHILDREN actually do something. Like support young mums or volunteer or give money to MH and addictions charities...

Or is their outrage their contribution to a civilised society?

ThymeLord · 19/07/2017 16:25

What an absolutely vile post FuckyDuck. If anyone is a cunt it really isn't U2.

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 19/07/2017 16:43

I don't think stigma stops people admitting it. If they are willing to smoke whist pregnant then they are usually brazen about it as see nothing wrong with it.

Those that see it is wrong I would imagine quit before TTC.

RyanStartedTheFire · 19/07/2017 16:48

I would guarantee that statistic is incorrect due to people secretly smoking. I don't know why people think the only people smoking whilst pregnant are the ones doing it on the high street. Many more will be doing it hidden at home. Of course people calling you an unfit/shit mother like on this thread is going to lead to people hiding it.

notomatoes · 19/07/2017 16:48

There is no reason, excuse or argument for smoking in pregnancy, if you choose to do it you're a selfish cunt and a shit parent.

Thing is though, there doesn't need to be. It is not your body it is not your choice. Your vile, unhelpful comments don't matter because every woman has the right to autonomy over her own body.

People are opening up and sharing their experiences. Your lack of understanding of women in different situations than your own, you're unwillingness to attempt to even attempt to understand other's lives, makes you the vilest cunt of all. I'd rather be a smoking pregnant woman than you.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/07/2017 16:48

Wow - that was truly one of the most despicable posts I've read on this site FuckyDuck - what a troll you are.

Nasty nasty cunt. Crawl back under your rock.
