To wonder why kids wear sunsuits in the swimming pool?

I know it's really none of my business but I don't get it. Do people think that sunsuits act as wetsuits? I'm fairly certain that it will be colder in a clammy uv sun suit than in a regular costume so wonder why at the pool last week about 1/3 of under 5's were wearing them? Albu to ask if your child wears a sunsuit to the local pool and if so why?

She doesn't specify indoor, just 'local' and there are plenty of outdoor lidos in UK and ones in holiday parks like Haven. So that's what I thought the thread was about.

Children need UV protection, so it strikes me as totally sensible to use such suits. It's not heat that matters for risk of sun damage, but angle (and therefore season)

Yes, saying 'indoor pools' would have helped.

DS1 definitely seemed warmer with his on in an indoor pool, even if this was just his perception it stopped him moaning and meant he was happier in the water. Also as others have mentioned much easier when they're at the age when you need to hold on to them.

Because you can't fit a picture of a whole crocodile on a pair of trunks Englishgirl that is the best reason for anything, ever!

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. Obviously I understand the need for the uv suit in outdoor pools in this country or abroad. I just don't get why they are worn for indoor pools in this country.

Following your last post, OP...

Because why buy a separate suit/trunks for indoor swimming?

SnugglySnerd · 16/07/2017 21:53

I can't afford to buy 2 swimming costumes each for 3 kids who will have grown out of them in a few months so they get a sunsuit every summer which has to do for the indoor pool too.

Mine wear them outside in outdoor pools when it's sunny to stop sunburn they are uv protected. My ds had one as his main swim wear so he wore it indoor too.

Ds wears one as he is autistic, and has sensory issues with his chest being uncovered, therefore he will not wear just trunks or shorts

My 5 yr old likes it more than his "standard" trunks. His choice

My son and daughter both do it because they like the blatant Paw Patrol branding emblazoned over the UV suits - you don't get that on the wetsuits.

Because he has two sunsuits (so he doesn't have to put a wet one back on) and no trunks.

Definitely easier to hold onto child in rash vest/wet suit/uv suit than normal swimming costumes. But agree uv suit won't keep them warm. We've just bought skinny DD1 (3) a normal wetsuit (in a charity shop) which she wore at our local pool the weekend. It's the first time she has been in the normal bit of the pool (I.e. Not the warm leisure waters) and not gone blue. Off the point a bit but it was fab, she has such a great time being toasty for once.

Because I bought it for a foreign holiday and DD wants it every time we go swimming now just because it has fecking Elsa on it and it's a battle I really can't be arsed to have so she wears it.

I think what should be clear to the OP is that none of you unholy parents of UV/rash-besuited children actually think it works like a wetsuit.

I used to wonder why people put their children in those awful suits in outdoor swimming pools...until I had a ginger haired very very white skinned child who will burn even when it's cloudy!
I have looked over for the suits with long arms and a hat but no luck. We go to Portugal every year in August and she has to wear a t shirt in the pool because she will burn in there too!

PiratePanda · 16/07/2017 22:14

Errr...assuming you're talking about an outdoor pool, for protection against the sun? Children can burn very quickly in an outdoor pool.

Agreed, a little odd if you're referring to an indoor pool, but as other people have said, perhaps parents don't want to/can't afford to buy another swimsuit.

DS always requests a swimming top rather than just trunks because since someone at school called him fat he's very self conscious no matter what I say/do Sad

(NB he Isn't fat, he has always been 95th percentile since birth so he isn't tiny either but the Drs have said he's fine it's just his build and they aren't concerned as he's stuck to his growth curve)

My 4 year old is in fancy dress 95% of the time, he's would like to attend his swimming lessons in a cape and utility belt but we compromise on a batman sunsuit.

Because my red haired son burns in 10 minutes in strong sun so we put a rash vest on him to protect his skin and stop him burning. a good rash vest has SPF 50 so is as good if not better than high factor waterproof sunscreen.

When he was little we used to have an all in one swimsuit to get him used to wearing one.

Raspberry- fat face and Decathlon both have long sleeved rash vests / uv tops for children and adults.
