Going at a ridiculous speed and then you end up at the traffic lights together?

Over-taking is a perfectly legal manover if done correctly...that's why you wouldn't be pulled over if spotted by the police Confused I over-take usually because the person in front is driving too slowly or is being erratic and irritating. I don't care if I come across another car in front of me or red traffic lights...the point is not being behind that particular irritating car anymore. It's a perfectly normal thing to do and I would be baffled as to why someone would wave at me after that?! Also..not understanding the need to compare a man's driving to the size of his cock..not funny.

MsStricty · 16/07/2017 11:18

As someone who overtakes slow or overly cautious drivers, I don't mind for a moment if they then catch up with me at traffic lights. I'm just happy I'm in front of them.

StiffyByng · 16/07/2017 11:24

Surely we're thinking of the sort of driver who overtakes endlessly in busy traffic and ends up gaining a few seconds before having to overtake again? They are the ones I find amusing - so much effort for so very little gain, and yes, not really that amusing if you think of the chances they are running of an accident.

I overtake when necessary all the time. Possibly others have been amused at me when I have done. Who knows?

MaisyPops · 16/07/2017 11:26

I won't do a dangerous overtake, but will go past people who insist on driving at 40 in a 60 zone when it's perfectly safe to do 60/overtake when safe.

It's not aggressive. It's wanting to live my life and do the things I enjoy instead of sitting behind somebody who wants to tootle around.

If I get caught behind a tractor, so be it. They'll either turn off, pull in or I'll overtake when it's safe.

Don't get me started on people at the front of queues behind tractors/diggers who have a safe overtaking place and don't use it but the rest of us can't overtake multiple vehicles safely. GrinHmm

That said, if someone IS being an arse e.g. everyone has pulled out on a dual carriageway because of a lorry & someone tears down the inside, I do like the solidarity of refusing to let them in and trapping them behind the lorry.

Lockheart · 16/07/2017 11:30

Sparkling it's not about being late, but if I'm doing a 150 mile journey (which I used to do regularly to visit my parents) then I'd rather only drive for 2.5 hours than for 3. Therefore if I can safely overtake the slow lorries etc then I will do.

If you're running late then you should have left earlier!

tigerdriverII · 16/07/2017 11:33

I overtake safely: loathe looking at the back of a car if I can have an empty road in front of me. I love driving.

I don't mind being overtaken although if the overtaker is driving crazily fast I'd make sure I kept my distance, some people are just crap drivers whatever speed they're going.

I really don't understand the drivers ( usually middle aged men) who appear angry if you overtake them. It's like a blow to their pride, the prats

TheStoic · 16/07/2017 11:47

I definitely overtake slow drivers if I can. Why wouldn't you? You never know when the next opportunity may arise.

SlothMama · 16/07/2017 11:54

If the overtake was legal I really don't see the issue or how it can be funny if you catch them up? And if you are being undertaken regularly then you are in the wrong lane! I cannot stand middle lane/outside lane hogs.

WeeM · 16/07/2017 12:27

There is a road near me which has a sign saying 'frustration causes accidents' as accidents are all too common. If someone behind you clearly wants to overtake, slow down and let them pass when it's safe. Otherwise these people get frustrated and end up taking unnecessary risks to overtake. There is nothing wrong with overtaking when it's safe, and some people don't like sitting behind a car. And don't even get me started on middle lane hoggers Grin

Hallomiaddicted · 16/07/2017 12:54

Being undertaken on the motorway when I am doing 80mph in the outside lane is not my problem.

Lexieblue · 16/07/2017 12:56

I'm glad people have this happen when they're experiences drivers, I'm learning to drive atm and even when I am doing the speed limit on lessons people feel the need to drive right up behind you and overtake you :(

ThePants999 · 16/07/2017 13:17

@Hallomiaddicted - of course it is. Why are you in the outside lane if you're not overtaking anyone? Highway code is very clear that you should be in the left lane unless executing an overtaking maneuver. You don't have some automatic right to sit in the outside lane just because you're going fast.

ThePants999 · 16/07/2017 13:24

Back on topic: it's all about taking the chances you get. Yes, sometimes I'll overtake and then end up at the same red light as them, in which case I haven't gained anything (yet). The next time, I'll make it through the lights and they won't, so I've gained significantly. On average, it saves me time at no cost to them, so of course I'll do it, and be quite bemused if they feel the need to wave or something on the occasions where they catch up with me again.

Really don't understand people who take being overtaken as some sort of personal insult, or who consider it automatically dangerous even if I have perfect visibility and nothing's coming.

Hallomiaddicted · 16/07/2017 13:52

I'm obviously over taking people going slower than me on the left! This doesn't stop people going 100/100+ from undercutting and weaving around traffic.

Barbaro · 16/07/2017 13:56

Fully agree with you meltorpeltor. I do it sometimes for fun, just because I can, or sometimes to deliberately annoy the driver because I know it will.

Works even better now that last one now that I have a golf tdi. I dunno what it is but when I overtake someone now even on a dual carriageway, always safely, I will more often now get them speeding up to try and overtake me again even though I haven't slowed down (I use cruise control a lot). Dunno if it's the red colour of it, the fact it's a tdi, whatever, but it happens way more now than it did with my silver c4. And I drive no differently.

But I also don't care if after overtaking some person doing 20 below the speed limit I then get slowed up by traffic lights because I know that I can find the accelerator quicker than those people and be on my way before they've realised the lights have changed. :P So being held up briefly makes no difference, I'll still get to where I want faster than had I been behind the slow driver. Plus I just find driving at slow speeds boring, I go the speed limit always. Deliberately driving at 40 or 50 when the limit is 60 would bore me to tears. That's just how I like driving, not all do, but those who don't should pull over to let others past as otherwise you are just causing accidents. It costs you nothing to do that and takes a few seconds to do so. I've done it before for a driver who was quite obviously wanting to do 90 and he road had hardly any passing places so I pulled over when I could. Saves some other person being hit head on after the person behind loses their patience.

MaisyPops · 16/07/2017 14:01

SlothMama
Middle/outside lane hogs are a particularly irritating breed.

The ones I really dislike are the ones who drive at 68 in the middle lane (when the inside lane is clear) purely, I assume, because it would a dent to their ego to drive in the 'slow' lane.

Ollivander84 · 16/07/2017 14:05

I did laugh a little when someone had been weaving in and out of traffic on the motorway, undertaking then overtook me and was really flooring it. Except he then overtook an unmarked police car Grin

roundaboutthetown · 16/07/2017 14:24

It is ridiculous when people are driving so slowly in the third lane of a four lane motorway that you can undertake them by driving in the slow lane... where the stupid tosspots should be themselves.

As for deliberately annoying aggressive drivers - just don't, please, or you might one day be partially responsible for getting someone killed. I didn't remotely appreciate it the other day when I rounded a bend on a country road to see a white van bearing down on me on my side of the road as it angrily overtook a slow moving vehicle. It only missed a head on collision because I put my breaks on hard, relieved there was nobody close behind me at the time to ram into the back of me. It then skidded back onto its side of the road, right in front of the slow moving car. Imo, both of those drivers were idiots.

LeafyGreenTree · 16/07/2017 14:44

I do love a thread when the OP thinks others are BU and actually it's themselves Grin

If people are undertaking you - you're in the wrong lane!

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 16/07/2017 15:01

Love overtaking a slow car, never realised it pissed the drivers off so much! I'll try and do it more often. I just thought they were driving in their own way and I was driving in mine. Never noticed anyone waving at me but I'll keep my eye out in case it's you. For the people who drive at 40 in a 60, maybe you should stick to the B roads of you aren't confident to drive. For those getting undertaken on the motorway, please move the fuck over to the inside lane, the other lanes are for overtaking!

Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2017 15:04

I can't understand how you can 'love overtaking' that's a bit weird.

CappuccinoSprinkles · 16/07/2017 15:26

I live in a town that has instituted 20mph speed limits on all roads it controls. There are 20 signs at the side of the roads and painted on the actual road. It is blindingly obvious the speed limit is 20.

And yet, I will always be tailgated, beeped and overtaken on the formerly 30 limit roads. I always used to be a calm driver but increasingly I want to scream at them all. Especially as you have to be a special kind of dick to overtake on a regular town road with houses and shops and schools on.

I need an LED display saying "the speed limit is 20 you wank badger".

MipMipMip · 16/07/2017 15:45

I have no problem with people over taking me my old car is irresistible to some! but I do get fed up when I've left a nice safe stopping difference and they go into that. I try to use two arrow spaces/only a fool breaks the two second rule/official guidelines and someone will see it as a nice space to go into. So I drop back and two more will fit in....

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 16/07/2017 15:56

I hate being sat behind someone doing 40 in a 60. I can and do overtake.

I also hate people dithering at roundabouts.

Once I've overtaken I don't applaud myself tho Hmm

Lurkedforever1 · 16/07/2017 16:12

Depends. If I'm stuck behind someone who clearly can't drive at a safe speed for conditions, I don't mind if 2 minutes after overtaking we're both at the same red light. The point is I won't have to trundle along behind them for the rest of my journey, and I won't end up behind them at every other set of lights whilst they spend ages figuring out that green means they can go. And if I'm heading towards a motorway, I have no intention of being behind the dangerous idiots that do 30 down a slip road and/or slow to a crawl to join the flow of traffic.
