To wish they would bring Top of the Pops back?

I know it had become tired and dated by the time it went off air, but it could be a great programme again. Half hour slot, only live performances, couple of videos, random guest presenters (Noel Fielding, Ed Balls, Michelle Obama?), top 20 countdown. Would much rather watch that than another bloody X Factor or whatever. And I might actually find out what the kids are listening to these days.

AIBU and just a nostalgic old bat?

yab a bit u i think i loved top of the pops but not sure it would work in this day and age?

EastMidsMummy · 16/07/2017 08:54

No-one would watch it so no-one would appear on it.

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 16/07/2017 09:11

Since the demise of CDs and TOTP I also find it hard to know what's what anymore with music. The TOTP format would seem very dated now though. I like watching old ones though on BBC4 and my kids look quite baffled by it.

I do miss CDs and don't buy so much music anymore Sad I do buy it online, but it's not the same. There was something so much easier about buying and owning a CD.

Wrt TOTP, nowadays I think it would only appeal to my age group rather than the young people it'd be aimed at and that kind of misses the point. Things move on and if we can't keep up then that's how it is.

My three teens don't even sit down to watch tv the way I might. They watch/listen to things online and on YouTube.

Thank goodness for radio6 which I love. That's a great place to hear old and new music Smile

CarmenWedmore · 16/07/2017 11:33

Radio 6 sounds like a good idea. I don't have teens so had no idea that they don't actually watch tv in the evening!

Agree re CDs. Made the music more 'solid' somewhere, seems so much more kind of 'throwaway' when it's just downloaded.

I miss it.

itsbetterthanabox · 16/07/2017 12:29

Why do you think no one would watch it?

AlternativeTentacle · 16/07/2017 12:33

Thank goodness for radio6 which I love.

Indeed. Grin.

moutonfou · 16/07/2017 12:35

I'd watch it. Yes we have music video channels now, YouTube etc but live TV performances by bands are now quite rare. That was the appeal of it.

Branleuse · 16/07/2017 12:35

I miss it too

alpacawhacker · 16/07/2017 12:37

I have two teens and a tween and can confirm that they, like me, almost never watch tv. If it weren't for DH I reckon we could get rid of it and nobody would care!

kkkkaty123 · 16/07/2017 12:40

Oh I watched an old one the other day. Bloody brilliant. Yes we have nothing like this now do we on the main channels ?

DontDeserveIt · 16/07/2017 12:43

A current TOTP YouTube channel could work. Like OP said different guest presenters and it could be very popular

DontDeserveIt · 16/07/2017 12:44

A live TV show then backed up by a YouTube channel interviewing bands that had performed maybe ?

CarmenWedmore · 16/07/2017 17:57

A YouTube channel would be good, but do you not think anyone would watch say if it was on a Sunday evening about 7 for just half an hour? Considering stuff like X factor and Strictly pull in loads of viewers ...

Floods123 · 16/07/2017 19:52

Brilliant idea! Maybe include a weekly legend singer or band!

CarmenWedmore · 16/07/2017 20:18

Exactly, there are so many possibilities! apparently the last live performance on TOTP was snow patrol doing chasing cars...

I have been banging on about this for years. It was never cool - doesn't have to be. It's just where pretty much everyone can find out what's popular. It was always kids, parents and the occasional gran and there's still scope for that.

My kids love the TOTP reruns and I love the TOTP Of The Year that they do around New Year. Discovered quite a few favourites that way.

Can't do R6 because they talk too much and think they are cool. I just want some easy access pop tunes once a week.

CarmenWedmore · 16/07/2017 21:40

Yes, backing, I can imagine that I'd probably tut my way through it but that's half the fun! Confused-looking audiences, odd dance routines... I'm sure there's still a place for it in this day and age. (But everything on tv seems to be so uber-polished, maybe it just wouldn't work anymore?)

EastMidsMummy · 16/07/2017 21:46

Why do you think no-one would watch it?

The core pop audience no longer watch much linear TV. They have instant access to music on YouTube and Spotify.

The charts themselves are more American/international than during the best TOTP years, which would make it much harder to get guests.

EastMidsMummy · 16/07/2017 21:50

Plus, all TV is much more wedded to a "narrative" these days. So X Factor or The Voice, (like Bake Off or Location, Location) are all about the back story. A chart rundown doesn't really present a very compelling TV show.
