Hi everyone,

Could I please ask you all for some advice on how I can look 'polished' and 'put together' please? (Inspired by another recent thread in Style and Beauty),

To give some context, I'm blonde with very fair skin (and quite short - around 5 foot?), and in my mid-twenties.

In terms of people whose style I like, I really like things that Kim Murray (Andy Murray's wife) wears, as well as Kate Middleton and, randomly, Brigitte Macron and Queen Letizia of Spain.

I tried going through my wardrobe a couple of months ago to try and see if I could get a 'capsule wardrobe', but I'm just not sure what suits me Blush

Could you all give me a hand please?

Thanks everyone :)

Wear a bra that fits you

Remove your nail varnish when it starts to chip

In your mid 20's, I think you're too young to be worrying about a capsule wardrobe - have some FUN with your clothes!

Highly I don't think the lady in your photo looks noticeably stylish. All I can see is that her face is far too young for the outfit she is wearing.

I definitely get the appeal of Olivia Palermo. She always looks chic but never overly done and isn't afraid to play around with fashion. Plus, being beautiful helps too I suppose!

Analyse your shape and learn to dress to that shape. I'm a slim but busty Apple so high necklines and waisted clothes simply don't suit me. I literally don't have a waist.

Plan your outfit the evening before and include shoes and accessories. Blow dry hair properly, if you can't get your hairdresser to teach you or get a different cut. Decent colour on hair if you have highlights etc.

Look after your clothes properly. Hang them. De bobble any woollens that need it and press things regularly even if they haven't been washed...this especially applies to jumpers and knitwear. Use moth killers and store bags and shoes so they stay on good condition and easily found.

Decent underwear. Nicely applied makeup, I buy cheap but what suits me. I am fair so use a light hand.

And posture. As before, it is so very important. As is a smile and a kind word. Smile

Why not? unless you think rough skin and cracked heels are a particularly attractive foot feature?

Grin A French pedicure has nothing to do with rough skin or heels though!

In fact I've seen French pedicures and cracked heels co-exist on more than one occasion.

MercuryMadness that doesn't shout 'polished' to me though, it shouts 'hip and groovy trying too hard'.

I'd still go for this one

That outfit is incredibly old fashioned. My mum is 76 and regularly wears matching beige. Branch out! Polished does not mean boring!

MaisieDotes · 15/07/2017 19:57

I think that outfit has high crumple potential.

MercuryMadness · 15/07/2017 20:08

These to me are polished looks which don't require chinos, pearls or matching beige.

Posture.

Smile.

Clothes that fit (including bra).

That's it.

I have grey hair in an inverted bob (great on me, super yawn from others). Cutrently in black harem-ish trousers (not low-critch Hammer pants!), yellow fliaty tshirt with butterflies, Casio watch, wide silver ring on ring finger of right hand, small turquoise studs, multicoloured sandals from Camper. Fingernails longish and rounded (need a cut, tut tut) but natural, toenails have a dark red Rimmel afair on that dries in 60 seconds. V minimal make up. Glasses. That's it. And i look pretty pulled together. I'm a bit if a shortarse and a chunk.

And i'm in A&E.

I love clothes but don't have a huge amount to spend so tend to buy a few cheaper items. I like to think of the whole look so will add jacket/coat ,shoes and handbag colour.

I try and stick to about 5 or so colours in different items.

For eg I have about 6 handbags - black, navy, grey, nude, white and straw.

I have shoes and sandles in the same colours.

The same with coats and jackets .

Shower every morning and blow dry my hair,if leaving the house will add a bit of make up,how much depends on plans.

cleanasawhistle · 15/07/2017 20:33

In winter I have a bright colour scarf to go with each coat,I shop around for bargains

cleanasawhistle · 15/07/2017 20:35

Actually what Hazelbite said....co-ordinated

I find these threads really interesting. I think I do most of things recommended yet still don't feel I look polished.

I keep my nails short and neat in a natural nail polish, I wash and dry my hair each day and never leave the house without makeup (aim for a natural finish), tiny eyebrows, get hair coloured every 6 weeks, iron clothes, never wear anything stained or crumpled, wear only plain colours, always carry a leather handbag yet still feel a mess! My teeth whilst aren't awful don't make a perfect smile, my hair has no volume so tends to flop easily so maybe based on this its teeth and hair....

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 15/07/2017 20:42

Tint my eyebrows not tiny eyebrows!!!!

blueshoes · 15/07/2017 21:27

Hi OP, as a fellow 5 footer, I totally get the pressure not to gain weight. Every pounds shows. A big meal shows. I keep my weight within a very narrow range of 2 kg. Not saying it is for everybody but I find it easier this way to maintain my weight.

At your age, I could pretty much eat anything but the weight did creep up. Now in my late 40s, to diet I do the 5:2 intermittent fast interspersed with, my latest discovery, a 5-day egg diet which is pretty effective.

With diets, like clothes I guess, you need to find one that suits you.

SukiTheDog · 17/07/2017 08:58

You've had some good advice OP.

I would reiterate that being slim and a natural clothes horse helps. Though I think Brigitte needs to wear tights now. She has very skinny legs but over suntanning has left its mark (but then, she is 64!). Also, her teeth being done has really helped.

I not sure I'm a fan though. I think she looks ever one of her years and am not sure all the articles saying she looks astonishing for her age, resonate with me. Just a personal opinion.
