or can I knock out all the power for my estate.

So am heavily pregnant with a 1 yr old DS so not getting a lot of sleep anyway but 48hrs ago there were lots of power cuts on my estate. National power or whoever they are came a put a massive generator outside the small substation next to our drive. It sounds like there is a lorry in the drive, or a small aircraft! No sleep for me last night, baby woke up 3 times (normally sleeps through).
No one knocked on to tell us what was happening. No one from the electricity board is calling me back, no workmen have turned up today.
AIBU to unplug the generator, gnawing through the cables with my teeth if necessary to make it stop. True I would probably knock out the leccy for the whole town and likely kill myself but the noise is driving me insane and I think it might be worth a shot!
Anyone had similar?

Yeah, don't do it!!!! Grin

Can you call them and find out approx timings?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 14/07/2017 14:16

Whilst I feel your pain it might be simpler (and less risky to life and limb) to check out the local electricity board's website to see if there is any more info on the situation?

Mustardnowletsnotbesilly · 14/07/2017 14:17

They just called back actually, its going to be Wednesday they reckon to finish... Dilemma whats worse 5 nights with my Mum or the sound... Gnawing still very much an option...

Probably better off hitting the big red emergency stop button than frying yourself!

In all seriousness we live off grid so a generator powers our home when solar isn't producing. Ear plugs work well

Stormwhale · 14/07/2017 14:20

Make sure you earth yourself and crack on op. That would drive me potty.

rinabean · 14/07/2017 14:23

if you don't want to stay with your mum and don't want to stay in your house, is a last minute holiday an option? Perhaps for the weekend only maybe? 2 nights in a holiday inn or whatever, 3 with your mum?

There was a big power cut when I was little, the generator wasn't by us but the power was terrible and on and off. I have a feeling the water was out too, we were on bottles being driven in. So we went away - to somewhere with electric and water! It was this time of year. With a baby it might be too much trouble moving all the kit though?

Good luck with the chewing!

Mustardnowletsnotbesilly · 14/07/2017 14:48

There is an emergency stop button?!?!?!?!?! I need to find it. Holiday is a brilliant option. I need a sad face DM article about me, bump out and holding the baby first and a go fund me page, but I think I should raise enough!

Whatever you do don't earth yourself if you chew through cables. Earthing yourself is how you get electrocuted. So an all covering rubber gimp suit would keep you safe with you get your daily amount of metal cable

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2017 14:53

Bucket of water?

Disclaimer: don't do that!

picklemepopcorn · 14/07/2017 14:53

Rubber gimp suit on pregnant woman...

user1495346531 · 14/07/2017 14:56

Go to mum for nighttimes, home during the day?

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2017 14:56

Hunter wellies are rubber. If that's more easily accessible than a gimp suit.

Kursk · 14/07/2017 14:56

Emergency stop, big red button probably looks like a mushroom with a yellow ring around it..........all equipment like that has one.

coddiwomple · 14/07/2017 14:57

I'd go for a bazooka, that should do it.

We had one of those down the road last year, the noise is truly horrendous. Does your mum work? Could you stay there the days she is at work
Can you sleep on the other side of your house, it might be less noisy?

Mustardnowletsnotbesilly · 14/07/2017 15:08

Bollocks my gimp suit is at the dry cleaners... dh has hunters maybe I could convince him to do some gnawing tonight. Mum lives 2 hours away so would have to be a weekend trip. God I can't even have wine to numb the noise! Back of the house is just as noisy. I could try the airing cupboard...

Thats always the way isn't it, never a gimp suit around when you need one. Wellies will work, just make sure he doesn't make his own set of metal teeth to chew through it like that villian Jaws from the Bond film. Of course if all else fails just pick up a hammer and channel your inner rage and just bash the hell out of it. Might not stop it but you'd feel better
