Last day of term

Why on earth does school have to close at 13:45 on the last day of term? What is the purpose of this? Confused!!!!

OP posts:
MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 16:38

I smell a GF OP. Or someone who is entitled and thinks their needs come before those who attend and work at their child's school. Subsequent posts from OP confirm this. 😀 Case rested M'lud.

Cary2012 · 16/07/2017 16:42

We serve lunch on the last day, it's to due with the FSM entitlement.

I think this thread, or some posters are trying to goad us teachers. That's fine by me, my focus is the students. Us who teach year 11 and Sixth Form are also expected to go in on result days, two consecutive Thursdays in August. So two weeks in August are blocked out with regards to having those weeks away on holiday. We all go in and do it, out of our UNPAID holiday, for the students.

Also we are unable to book cheaper holidays. So unlike some parents who take their kids out in term time to take advantage of cheaper holidays, we can't.

5moreminutes · 16/07/2017 16:43

Wouldn't it be nice though, if they just didn't have to go in at all on the last day...

I'm aware of course that isn't anything to do with teachers. It's a central thing.

But what is the actual point...

I'm not worried about childcare I'm very negligent because I live in a country where nobody pearl clutches and jumps on the internet to ask whether to call SS if a responsible 8 or 9 year old gets themself home from school, grabs a sandwich and a glass of orange juice and watches TV for a couple of hours, let alone and 11 or 12 year old. My late primary and early secondary children are home alone together for a couple of hours most Fridays, for various logistical reasons, and will be home alone when I do a few short early shifts over the holiday - its fine, they're fine, and like feeling responsible and chilling out without being nagged to get dressed :o They're tried and tested at being home alone for a couple of hours.

Cary2012 · 16/07/2017 16:43

do, not due.

Cary2012 · 16/07/2017 16:46

It's about having to complete so many registrations in an academic year, and providing so many FSMs.

BeauMirchoff · 16/07/2017 16:48

@LilithTheKitty are you fucking kidding me? No concept of working parents? Are teachers with children NOT working parents? I'm sick of this prejudice against teachers. We educate your kids ffs, have some respect! You wouldn't like it if I started slating your job, would you?!

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 16:50

Anyone who thinks teaching is an easy ride and that our six week summer break is a disgrace, is more than welcome to take my bottom set Y9 crew last period on a Friday (they have PE the period before), when its a full moon and windy. I'll be the one sniggering up the back with the huge bag of popcorn - with tissues ready at the end of the period. And they wont be for the kids....that'll teach them.

eggplanter · 16/07/2017 16:54

If they didn't go in at all on the last day, that would just mean the day before became the last day.. You can't avoid having a last day!
That's the same logic that believes it's possible to have every child performing at above average levels.

Cary2012 · 16/07/2017 16:56

Hey MSL, do we teach the same year 9s? Grin I particularly enjoy them when it's windy, full moon, period 5 following Art, and, icing on the cake, NON UNIFORM DAY!

5moreminutes · 16/07/2017 16:59

Cary2012

I guess the FSM thing is actually a good reason. It makes sense in the UK, which I guess is where most people are taking about.

We don't even get school meals though! Schools here don't serve meals at all. Yet they also have a compulsory last day lasting two hours!

You can be fined a percentage of your monthly income here for your child missing school for no reason, UK fines have nothing on the system that's been in place here for decades Shock No kids going on term time holidays here, and even missing the last 2 hour day happens once in a blue moon, when there is some very special reason (sometimes people swing it if they can prove an important family event on the other side of the country/ in another country).

It must just be number of registrations, for a purely box ticking reason enforced centrally.

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 17:00

Forgot about non- uniform day @Cary2012 😀 the full shitstorm of a lesson for the teacher haters! passes popcorn to @Cary2012*

5moreminutes · 16/07/2017 17:02

eggplanter normal day, then a non contact day instead of the last day (so kids stay home).

Maybe they would go crazy - but not more so than the last day before Christmas and Easter surely? Those are normal length days. At secondary the exam years/ leavers are long gone before the end of term, so the last day before summer isn't that different to the end of the other terms is it (for the kids)?

Cary2012 · 16/07/2017 17:04

Cheers, passes Prosecco to MSL Grin And they've all got a new fidget spinner, just to make it even more fun.

An excellent argument for non uniform schools! My kids have never worn a school uniform, and not wearing a uniform makes no difference when it's the same old same old!

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 17:10

@Cary2012 yes. And they've each had two cans of Red Bull at lunchtime, alongside an ersatz Pot Noodle and a ton of Haribos. The fair is in town and the discussion as they enter is about what they'll be drinking and who's going to cop off with whom (ideally one of the guys who works on the waltzers). Pickled onion Monster Munch @Cary2012

Can't believe you forgot 'after a fight at lunchtime'. Then a wasp flies in the room. Lesson: over.

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 17:12

Fecking bold fail. Puts dunce's cap on and faces the wall. Roll on the fucking holidays when parents have to look after the children they (presumably) chose to have.

gillybeanz · 16/07/2017 17:13

Well, I for one have nothing but respect for teachers.
I think you all do a fantastic job under some very difficult circumstances, policies and procedures.
I don't understand why teachers get such flack from parents and find it ridiculous that some parents don't realise that their teachers are parents themselves, faced with the same problems as other parents.

To the parents on here who have been detrimental to teachers just ask yourselves how you would feel if people were making comments about you because of your chosen career.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

Thank you to all the lovely teachers who not only work in the conditions above but also tirelessly answer questions and offer support ito education on these boards too.
You know who you are Thanks

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 17:13

And the window cleaners arrive noblegiraffe both of whom are ex (not former) pupils and friends with the older brother of the biggest "character" in the class.

EvilTwins · 16/07/2017 17:22

I adding "and there is a PE lesson on the field" which my classroom overlooks. Particularly good if there is yr 7 athletics. Mixture of "go on, keep running" and "hahah look at HIM" etc etc

Still, last day ever on Friday so no more windy P5s on non-uniform days after a fight with added wasps, window cleaners and athletics for meeee!

SmileEachDay · 16/07/2017 17:31

I'm adding three flakes of snow fall

🙄

MSLehrerin · 16/07/2017 17:31

Thank you @gillybeanz

It totally rips my knitting when parents give the vibe that we are only doing what we do to allow them to do their own jobs. And then pass opinion on school policies and procedures. Teacher hating is popular at the moment among the entitled. It was their lifestyle choice to have kids and we've all been through the school system so holidays/inset days etc aren't exactly a huge bastarding fucking surprise are they?

Jaxhog · 16/07/2017 17:35

Wow! I wasn't slagging off teachers. Just saying that teachers aren't the only people with stressful jobs. How about a bit of mutual respect?

Jaxhog · 16/07/2017 17:37

PS. My father was a teacher, so I'm not unfamiliar with what's involved.

SocksRock · 16/07/2017 17:39

It's to benefit the pub over the road from the school. Our village ones knows which is the last day of term and stays open all afternoon instead of shutting at 2pm, loads of kids and parents spend the afternoon there having a merry old start to the holidays.
