Charlie Gard 7

Continuation of the discussion.

It looks highly unlikely that there will be a verdict today as GOSH have not yet been able to put their case across. The Gard family had their position heard this morning and currently an expert witness from the US is being questioned via video link.

I saw on the CA FB page that one person wrote along the lines of if Charlie isn't in pain then he should live the life his parents choose for him.

cjt110 · 13/07/2017 16:28

What time can the court sit until? I know I've been in court probably no later than 5.30 (in a past legal capacity).

Ceto · 13/07/2017 16:30

CA latched on to the fact that Victoria Butler-Cole is apparently involved with a Dying with Dignity charity. They cannot understand that that does not equate to wanting children to die unnecessarily.

Sostenueto · 13/07/2017 16:30

Place marking

11122aa · 13/07/2017 16:31

Place Marking as well.

Sirzy · 13/07/2017 16:31

Surely everyone wants to die with Dignity? That should be a minimum for everyone ideally.

blueskyinmarch · 13/07/2017 16:31

I went out for a few hours and things seem to have moved on quickly. Is the expert that is being questioned an actual doctor or is he a research scientist? Would it be in his work remit to assess patients normally?

Ceto · 13/07/2017 16:31

They can sit pretty late, but I doubt they will today. Other issues apart, Charlie's parents probably want to go back to him.

Artisanjam · 13/07/2017 16:32

I've been in cases before which have gone on to 6.30 but only when it was an urgent judicial review with a real prospect of finishing that day completely and where there would otherwise be a long adjournment.

cjt110 · 13/07/2017 16:32

10 minute break is currently 17m long... I suspect lots of conversations in consultation rooms and perhaps even judges chambers is occurring right now.

GabsAlot · 13/07/2017 16:32

still on break

Sostenueto · 13/07/2017 16:32

Expert says he not qualified to practise here, didn't want to come over yo get in way of gosh, then says yes he will come. DerConfused

GherkinSnatch · 13/07/2017 16:32

mucky They would do a scan to measure his skull. A tape measure wouldn't be accurate due to swelling.

I hope that the best outcome for poor Charlie is found. I just can't fathom the CA fervour, a lot of it is just disgusting. Why on earth would the hospital want to harvest his organs??!

jellypi3 · 13/07/2017 16:32

cavemum No!!!! Some people are sick :(

I do feel for C&C, regardless of how I feel about the media frenzy they have whipped up, no parent would want to be in their position, but I cannot believe the hate towards the doctors and nurses who are working tirelessly for Charlie's best interests. Those poor people, I hope their anonymity is protected to the highest degree and this doesn't force any of them out of working at GOSH.

GabsAlot · 13/07/2017 16:33

Case resumes. Neurological expert in US being cross examined by barrister for Charlie's legal guardian.

cjt110 · 13/07/2017 16:33

Artisanjam Yes, that makes sense now. If there's a "finishing line" in sight with no quick chance of relisting....

11122aa · 13/07/2017 16:33

Case has resumed.

FlowerSour · 13/07/2017 16:33

The judge seems to be very fair and balanced. He is considering everything, hence the unusual/ sometimes random line of questioning and he has to establish all relevant information.

He has to know that the doctor would be prepared to come to London as it speaks volumes about his opinion- if he'd look at Charlie, it means he's willing to actually act on the evidence he has given. If he gave evidence but would not go to London to see Charlie, that would suggest he didn't really believe there was a chance. (That, or he doesn't want to treat Charlie for various reasons.)

The description of the parents breaks my heart. Walking out of court? Shouting at the judge and interrupting? They may be going through such a traumatic time right now and clearly they are suffering.

Do they genuinely believe GOSH are mistaken, or do they just want more time with their son? I am not sure.

A week ago or so ago they just wanted to take Charlie home to die. Now that the media circus has began, they've changed what they're asking for. Was it the media circus, all the Army and the support that has fed into their heads that fighting for their sons life when he is in this condition is for the best? If the media circus had never started up, would they have accepted it?

I don't agree with what they are doing. If it were my child, the ventilator would have been turned off a long time ago. However, Charlie is not my child and I don't know what is going through their heads or what they believe.

They have been criticised a lot. Disagree with their major actions and main issue here- i.e., going back to court- but picking them apart because Chris wore sunglasses in a photo and because their 'sad faces' are not 'right' is just extremely picky and inappropriate.

As for the Charlie's Army tat- I believe the aunt, Laura, has organised this. If the parents are busy fighting for their dying son, I doubt they care if people are selling tat if it helps their cause. I imagine they have more pressing concerns.

It doesn't make the tat appropriate to sell, but bear in mind the parents may not be responsible for everything.

I can't wait for the outcome. I've been following the case for weeks now as I'm interested in the legal side, but I admit I've formed my own opinions on the ethical side as well.

I hope he's at rest soon. This is subjective, yes, but he does actually look ill now. The poor baby looks swollen, and it breaks my heart.

muckypup73 · 13/07/2017 16:34

The thing is, surely Gosh could have done a scan today then faxed over the measurements?

cjt110 · 13/07/2017 16:34

Witness: we cannot fix or cure his disease. I'm confident we can improve cognitive function but don't know how much.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 13/07/2017 16:34

"we cannot fix or cure his disease. I'm confident we can improve cognitive function but don't know how much."

DonutCone · 13/07/2017 16:34

Yeah the hospital are desperate to harvest failing organs.

These people are so stupid it's almost funny.

GabsAlot · 13/07/2017 16:34

DorotheaBeale · 13/07/2017 16:35

Not getting the impression there's been anything said that's likely to change the judge's decision.

GabsAlot · 13/07/2017 16:35

Witness accepts nucleoside therapy can improve function but only if damage has not occurred. Can't repair damage.
