To think putting your baby on the floor under the seat on a plane is not cool?

Just flew back yesterday from holiday and there was a couple across the aisle from me on the plane. They had a baby about 8 months and a toddler.

As soon as the seat belt sign went off after take off the mum sat her baby on the floor at her feet. Budget flight so no room at all hardly. The baby sat chewing on the dads shoe that he has taken off.

Mum then gives the baby her bottle and she falls asleep so mum lies her under the seat in front at her feet. The baby's head was right next to the aisle all this time with people passing and also the trolley going up and down. I thought the baby was going to get kicked or stood on.plus the floor was filthy with crisps and god knows what from the previous flight.

I actually offered to hold the baby in the end as I was so worried she would get hurt. The mum said no she's fine, thanks.

Would you have said anything in these circumstances.
It just would never have crossed my mind to put my baby on the floor of an aeroplane.

Not your baby, not your business. Baby was fine.

Nonsense. Everyone has a collective responsibility to ensure vulnerable people are safe. Not all parents are capable of looking after children.

grandOlejukeofYork · 13/07/2017 09:56

It's not nonsense. Hmm Baby had 2 parents there and plenty of staff who could see it. You can keep your "it takes a village" rubbish.

I'm cabin crew and remember the earlier case link.

I'm shocked crew didn't notice, carpets on aircraft are just about as grim and filthy as it gets. I'm guessing this family would possibly all trot to the loo with no shoes and socks on to boot ....ugh

grandOlejukeofYork · 13/07/2017 10:04

It's not a rule, it's a case by case basis. And in this case, its not your business.

OP agrees, because she didn't do anything other than take photos and bitch about it afterwards. And while you make a fuss on the internet, you wouldn't have done anything either, which you know.

Hmm No need to tell me to fuck off either.

Only1scoop · 13/07/2017 10:07

'Taking photo's and bitching about it' is just as grim though IMOHmm

grandOlejukeofYork · 13/07/2017 10:12

Well that is all she did! All this oh it's awful, somebody should do something...nobody did, did they? Can't have been that terrible. And everyone here saying it's not ok, they wouldn't have done anything either.
It's all just chatter to make yourselves feel superior, while not achieving anything.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 13/07/2017 10:14

I've got no issue with a kid being on the floor. But how on earth did it fit without having a face full of metal from the underside of the chair?

That's what I thought, how did it fit?

The dirty floor wouldn't bother me but I would be worried about unexpected turbulence Shock

MoonfaceAndSilky · 13/07/2017 10:16

OP did do something - she offered to hold the baby herself.

grandOlejukeofYork · 13/07/2017 10:23

And mother said no (which you would if some random asked to hold your baby!) and the OP then did nothing.
If she was truly worried she could have talked to the staff and said she thought it wasn't safe. She could have explained her issue to the parents.

You're making it tempting to report you.

Fruitcocktail6 · 13/07/2017 10:36

Ooh my first ever deletion.

MrsOverTheRoad · 13/07/2017 10:46

What York said. Why should the Mother be expected to hand the baby to some busybody?

OP was right to worry but wrong to photograph the baby and wrong not to alert the staff who she claims were almost standing on it.

SeaWitchly · 13/07/2017 10:47

I can't really see the issue here...

Baby was comfortable and slept peacefully for 90 minutes.
They were under the chair so how on earth were they going to get squashed by the food trolley or someone's random foot Confused

Really it seems as if parents can never win, always some judgy person ready to make the Hmm face, make a comment, take a photo of said incident, post said incident on Mumsnet...

When my DC were small I was paranoid that they would kick off on the plane through tiredness or hunger and so I would do whatever it took to settle them and keep them settled... as much for the good of our fellow passengers as their own. So if my baby had happily fallen asleep under the chair I would have left him there.

I find it really strange that anyone would be shocked by this tbh.

MrsOverTheRoad · 13/07/2017 11:10

SeaWitch I tend to agree with you...one parent having a different idea of what surface is suitable in terms of cleanliness doesn't automatically mean the other's out of order.

The only risk factor would be feet walking past and standing on a little hand though. Or because it's a high traffic area with hot drinks.

So because of those issues, I would have told the crew.

Astella22 · 13/07/2017 14:28

YABU to take a sneaky photo of someone else's child to gossip about it. As long as the baby was happy and not hurt then you should mind your own

Brittbugs80 · 13/07/2017 14:37

Don't airlines provide bassinets any more? I clocked up thousands of miles with my two safely in a bassinet when not being fed. What was that mother thinking? I would have been making sure the cabin crew knew what was happening

There's hardly room for your legs on some short haul flights, nevermind a bassinet!

I've only seen one used once and that was when we flew to New York with Airfrance on the A380 Airbus and it was only the middle aisle at the front that had the space for it to fit.

That's horrendous to lay the baby on a hard and minging floor. Shows selfishness really that they can't be bothered to hold it.

Ywbvvvvu to take a picture of a child that isn't yours to send to someone else. What the hell were you thinking??!

Wasn't the brightest idea putting the baby there incase of sudden turbulence however what you did was much worse.

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 08:30

Also I'd never hand my baby to a stranger so weird that you'd expect them too.
