I didn't think about oedema being painful :( thank god for morphine when my little boy was so poorly. To everyone else he looked like he was chunking up (tube fed so no calories wasted) and we had to convince the docs it wasn't just cute podge.
I'm glad he's on morphine. Surely if there's any risk of him being in pain he should have painkillers?

nauticant · 11/07/2017 16:05

It is interesting ShatnersWig. In your chemo example I'd be torn but your approach would probably win out for me.

When it comes to a child, a very low chance, and any miracle meaning suffering and no quality of (short) life then I'm glad it's not my decision. But any decision should based on reality and not on myths.

11122aa · 11/07/2017 16:05

And on an interview yesterday he believed Charlie could recover enough to go to nursery based on an American child he knows.

Rabbitnothare · 11/07/2017 16:06

I would always support a second opinion and I am someone who will challenge 'authority' and stick my neck out if I think that something is wrong.

That's how it should be I think, I have had things go wrong with medical care.

This is not what this is about:

Lonelymummyof1 · 11/07/2017 16:07

Rabbitnothare- she is not too bad waiting on a decision about going to theatre but her blood is still positive of bacteria.
Thankyou for asking

MoreProseccoNow · 11/07/2017 16:07

ExConstance you are not comparing like with like.

Rachel0Greep · 11/07/2017 16:08

Lonelymummy - thinking of you and your little girl.

LogicalPsycho · 11/07/2017 16:09

@Lonelymummyof1 Flowers I saw you one of the earlier threads on this case and remember what you're also going through with your DD. Hope you're okay.

Deux · 11/07/2017 16:09

Has Trump remained silent on all of this since the G20?

11122aa · 11/07/2017 16:10

Yes Trump has not mentioned it since.

Mermaid36 · 11/07/2017 16:12

I was under the impression that morphine was often given when ventilated because having a tube down your throat on a long term basis can be pretty painful, as can having your lungs mechanically expanded - which is what ventilation basically is...

allowlsthinkalot · 11/07/2017 16:14

I have also tried to like your comments Lonelymummy but unable to.

dustmotesinthesun · 11/07/2017 16:16

I think, with respect, very few people can possibly know what they'd do when faced with very serious illness and have a choice to make with regards treatment. The reality is often very different to what you might imagine. It's easy to think you'd know what you'd do but until you're in that situation you just don't.

alltouchedout · 11/07/2017 16:18

I suppose CA think that "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” it troubles me deeply that their views are so despised.

I'm sorry, are you saying that it is reasonable to view GOSH, the medical experts they have consulted, and the courts as evil, and CA as good men? Have I utterly misread your post?

Deux · 11/07/2017 16:20

I think it speaks volumes that Trump is silent as he's not one to let an opportunity pass by.

I know my situation was very different but when my DH was in ICU and on life support he did report afterwards that he experienced pain and extreme discomfort in his lucid moments from the procedures. His wrists were restrained to stop him pulling out the tubes. He was eventually ventilated via tracheostomy to avoid permanent damage. He was also very badly swollen and bloated from IV steroids. He looked like he'd been inflated.

notaslimceagirl · 11/07/2017 16:24

'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” it troubles me deeply that their views are so despised.'

What exactly is this 'evil' that you are hinting at?

Lightlovelife · 11/07/2017 16:24

Darthmaden that's 2 of the 7. What about the other 5?

MommaGee · 11/07/2017 16:28

lonelymummy which article?
Flowers for you and Bear for your lovely girl x

Sostenueto · 11/07/2017 16:29

Flowers lonelymummy hope dd starts to improvexx
What I am worried about is the parents reaction in court and at the hospital if it doesn't go the way they want. So so sorry for them but what if they kick up when Gish try to withdraw treatment and the parents still won't let them? They can't arrest them or remove them can they? Surely it won't pan out like that but the parents will be so devastated and mad with grief. I feel so sad about it, really I doSad

LovelyBath77 · 11/07/2017 16:31

How are they paying for the lawyers etc, if they don't get legal aid? Did i see the lawyer was acting for free?

How can so many posters be so sure he is in pain?

No one knows, however when I have had an operation I wake up with a sore throat from being intubated, this child has been intubated for months.

When you are on a ventilator your lungs have to be, well not a nice way to put it, have any mucus siphoned/sucked out added to that positive pressure is being used to inflate the lungs.

He is also on IV meds and I assume a feeding tube.

Each of these can cause pain.

From what I have read his organs will probably start to breakdown soon, have you ever had a kidney infection?

It is fair to assume any child with this going on is undergoing things that cause pain, the only difference here is that he may be too brain damaged to feel it.

On balance it's better to give pain relief. As for starting with calpol (I know it wasn't you) I think they will go by what other patients with the same interventions but able to communicate tell them.

LovelyBath77 · 11/07/2017 16:31

I suppose they must deal with parents feeling like that at times, maybe the hospital has experience dealing with them?

OP posts:
MommaGee · 11/07/2017 16:32

Yeah lawyers for free

LovelyBath77 · 11/07/2017 16:32

He also has organ damage, surely that must cause pain.

I also hope to god that every single member of CA 60,000 exclusively use private healthcare, because it would be blatant hypocrisy to criticise our 'socialised healthcare', and then benefit from it yourself when you get the sniffles.

I get the impression that "Charlie's Army" are not particularly blessed with the intelligence or logic to work that one out, though.
