To think this song can't be serious. Please tell me it was created as a joke?

Just came across this song and video on my youtube. Apparently it reached number 1!

I'm traumatised from just watching it!

It was meant as a joke surely?

Does anyone remember Walking in Memphis? "Are you a Christian child? MAAAAN I am TONIGHT"

Not sure if anyone has answered, didn't see if so but yep - that's Cher and Walking In Memphis.

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 00:46

Who were the band with the guy in the hat (not Jaykay - where's he now?) who took himself way too seriously for now good reason. Ben something? Smash Hits used to take the piss all the time.

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 00:46

winglesspegasus you're clearly on the wrong thread then. It never gets constipating. Grin

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 11/07/2017 00:46

Hudson Yes and there was an amazingingly bad cover in about 1996

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 00:49

Cher? Walking in Memphis? That rang a bell but in my head it was a bloke (a "maaan") so I looked it up - Marc Cohn. 1990.

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 00:49

Rude? The Divinyls.

Ooh yes. I Touch Myself.

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 00:54

Mark Cohen - Walking In Memphis

Cher - Walking in Memphis

Same song, just a couple of years difference and seems the Cohen one came first. Smile

Oh yes, Let's Get Ready To Rhumble is a TUNE! I remember my mate and I making up a dance to it for the talent show in Primary School. We were amazing, as you can guess

I may or may not have got completely giddy when Ant and Dec re-did "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble" on Saturday Night Takeaway the other year, much to the bemusement of the kids lol Grin

At a guess, Curiousity Killed The Cat? He wore a hat and was called Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot so there's your Ben.
Was also always in Smash Hits. Smile

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 01:04

Ben with the hat was from Curiosity Killed the Cat. Amazing what you can find out by googling "Ben hat smash hits" Grin

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 01:05

Sorry Hudson I see you'd just dispelled the need for google!!

Yay, don't know whether to be proud or ashamed of the fact I am the Google of Cheese.
I'm going for proud. I'm always proud of my cheese knowledge lol Grin

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 01:09

"Ben Vol-au-vent Parrot" in Smash Hits parlance...

SamanthaUnkim · 11/07/2017 01:12

Perhaps the trauma lies in knowing that tripe like this finally killed Britain's domination of world pop music and put all the power back into the hands of producers rather than the artists themselves

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 01:13

Have just remembered Glenn Medeiros. Those jumpers.

"Nothing's gonna change my love for you, you oughta know by now how much I love you......."
OMG, I've found my people on this thread. Grin

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 01:13

This is making me dwell on just how long U2 have been massive for. My DB used to be a huge Simple Minds fan and I remember a phone vote on the day of Live Aid on Radio 1 on who were better, SM or U2. I really wanted SM to win out of loyalty to DB but they were gubbed by U2. I was not happy. Almost exactly 32 years ago.

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 01:18

I also remember Just Seventeen before it switched to J17.

Me too, used to buy it every week. Along with every issue of TV Hits.
Also used to buy Patches, Blue Jeans, Hi! and then in later teen years More!

Largebucket · 11/07/2017 01:23

I should be in bed. Instead am listening to Alisha Rules the World. Marvellous.

winglesspegasus · 11/07/2017 01:25

lagebucket

my introduction to sm

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 11/07/2017 01:27

Ooh you're right Hudson re Cher. I have no idea why I thought whatshisname covered her rather than the other way. I remember his version on the radio in the 1995/1996 when I was about 12 or so but must be a Mandela Effect GrinWink

Hudson10 · 11/07/2017 01:28
