At a guess, Curiousity Killed The Cat? He wore a hat and was called Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot so there's your Ben.
Was also always in Smash Hits.

OMG, I've found my people on this thread.

This is making me dwell on just how long U2 have been massive for. My DB used to be a huge Simple Minds fan and I remember a phone vote on the day of Live Aid on Radio 1 on who were better, SM or U2. I really wanted SM to win out of loyalty to DB but they were gubbed by U2. I was not happy. Almost exactly 32 years ago.

I also remember Just Seventeen before it switched to J17.
