To think this song can't be serious. Please tell me it was created as a joke?

Just came across this song and video on my youtube. Apparently it reached number 1!

I'm traumatised from just watching it!

It was meant as a joke surely?

I still think of Take That as new 'uns. I was in 2nd year at university, having a lie in when all this screaming erupted from the living room. It was my flat mates, nursing their hangovers in their dressing gowns, who had turned on Saturday morning telly and were overcome by the beauty of these young men in a video with them all dressed in billowy white. I'd hauled myself out of bed to check out the noise, utterly perplexed (and remained so when I saw what the catalyst was)

ScrambledSmegs · 10/07/2017 23:04

Olennas how could you forget the Shirehorses?! Shock

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 10/07/2017 23:08

Bollocks they are before your time. You clearly just went through the 90s with no music taste. B*witched were my idols! Denim and a Miss Selfridge 'Heart' Tshirt, irish accents and oddly sexual lyrics. What is not to love!? Grin

FoofFighter · 10/07/2017 23:13

I just joined the 21st century and dled Spotify and am now following the Mumsnet feel old playlist BlushConfusedWinkGrin

CoffeeBreakIn5 · 10/07/2017 23:14

Ah so much nostalgia! I feel the urge to whip out the hair mascara for work tomorrow.

I wish those trouser skirt combos were still cool, they cover a multitude of sins.

Off to make a new playlist for the commute tomorrow.

Oh and thanks to the posters who cleared up the 'chimney' lyric meanings. Until tonight I thought that I'd misheard the lyrics and that it was some huge joke that everyone thinks the lyric is chimney when it's actually something else that makes sense . I've never dared ask anyone irl incase they laughed at me.

Funko · 10/07/2017 23:17

yellowfrontdoor the quad. A school in Derby perhaps? Grin

And 'killing me softly' every break and lunchtime on the field for months 😂

Funko · 10/07/2017 23:18

Someone mentioned bay trading co. That was my fashion jam right there!

Lj8893 · 10/07/2017 23:22

Bay trading co Shock forgot all about that place! I bought a beautiful grey wool full length coat with fur collar from there, I was about 13 and thought I looked so bloody classy.

AppalazianWalzing · 10/07/2017 23:24

The best thing about the no way no way mnamana song is that the video was shot in Brockwell Lidl. That never fails to make me smile- those girls must have been freezing.

I'm now feeling very nostalgic for oversized trousers doc boots and butterfly clips.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 10/07/2017 23:24

I love the song in the OP.

AradiasDaughter · 10/07/2017 23:24

Bay Trading and Jane Norman. Everyone wanted one of those bags for high school. If you had a netto bag you never lived it down. Life wasn't worth living.
Loved the Coors, B*Witched, Boyzone, 5ive!

I watched 5ive in concert at the MEN- it was my first one as well.. cringe.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 10/07/2017 23:25

That was me! Bay trading co and Jane Norman were what I was about. I went to England on a regular basis and my friends back home were jealous that I took my PE kit to school in a Jane Norman carrier bag Grin

AngelaKardashian · 10/07/2017 23:25

This was the song of my childhood. And I've just seen another thread about the first CD you bought - THIS WAS MINE! Two doses of B*witched reminders in five minutes. Living the dream.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 10/07/2017 23:27

Or one of those Morgan or Kooki black rectangle shoulder bags, for £9.99 as your school bag. So sophisticated in 1998.

yellowfrontdoor · 10/07/2017 23:27

Funko nope, I'm afraid not! South East.

Did also love a bit of Bay Trading. Had a relative working there, well & truly took advantage of the 20% discount!
I seem to remember having a wide selection of their reversible tops in various pastel shades! 🙈
And my number one crush wore a lot of Ben Sherman & Lynx Africa.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 10/07/2017 23:28

I also remember Just Seventeen before it switched to J17.

ScrambledSmegs · 10/07/2017 23:29

I think I've actually still got a dress from Bay Trading hiding in the attic.

Does that count as vintage these days?

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 10/07/2017 23:29

And when Bliss Magazine came with a free can of brand new Impulse o2 body spray and I took mine into school and Katherine Morgan used all of it after P.E. whilst looking me in the eye and singing Words by fucking Boyzone.

HoosierDaddy · 10/07/2017 23:30

My stepmum got me a Morgan make up bag set not that long ago. DH is still partial to Lynx Africa. I'll get my Bay Trading acrylic coat

ScrambledSmegs · 10/07/2017 23:31

Oh, I remember reading More! when I was 13/14 and giggling over Position of the Fortnight. They have to have been taking the piss. One was 'The Wheelbarrow'!

Ollivander84 · 10/07/2017 23:31

I loved echobelly! Still listen to garbage and skunk anansie

Lynnm63 · 10/07/2017 23:32

Los del Rios Macarena or Lenny Bennett and Boon as they're known in our house. I felt really old when dh and I were laughing about this song and the dc had no idea who Lenny Bennett or Boon were.
Don't know how to link YouTube videos as I'm TOO OLD!

ScrambledSmegs · 10/07/2017 23:35

Skunk Anansie! Weak is a CHOOOOON.

DH was absolutely bloody convinced for years that Skin was in a relationship with Natalie Imbruglia! No amount of waving wikipedia in his face could convince him otherwise.

Largebucket · 10/07/2017 23:38

Have just remembered Glenn Medeiros. Those jumpers.

Largebucket · 10/07/2017 23:39

Didn't Natalie Imbruglia go out with Ross from Friends for years?
