To think Aldi isn't actually that much cheaper?

I've been an Aldi convert for a while now .
However today I need to pick things up and was close by a Sainsbury's so decided to go there instead of across town to Aldi.
I was shocked that there was hardly any difference in price .
Plus it was a much nicer experience. I always feel like an inconvenience to the staff in Aldi .... either in their way while they are trying to stack shelves or not quick enough at checkout.
I also picked up some pretty good deals in Sainsbury's with meat etc that had been marked down.
So aibu or is it really not that cheap anymore?
Has anyone gone back after being an Aldi convert?

I spent £70 in Aldi the other day on nothing much really! I think things have gone up.

SandyDenny · 09/07/2017 19:31

It depends on what you buy obviously but I never find Sainsburys to be cheap for me. I go there occasionally because it's handy but I would never do a full shop there.

I've noticed that Morrisons is getting expensive, I'm going to try moving to a combination of Asda and aldi. Aldi prices are going up but still cheaper on most of the things I buy, I only go elsewhere because aldi don't sell everything I need

Me! Always had Tesco home delivery but friends persuaded me to try Aldi. I started off well but still had to do a top up shop at a big supermarket for some things that Aldi didn't do or the branded stuff that we prefer. Over time the cost of the shop has crept up and I realized I wasn't really saving anything but also having to sacrifice two hours of my precious weekend to do the shop!! I've gone back to Tesco home delivery.

Can't stand Aldi - and no it isn't really any cheaper. And I can't stand they way they literally throw your shopping at you as they scan it and expect you to put it all back in your trolley and then go and pack it all in bags somewhere else. What a waste of time !

user1492023898 · 09/07/2017 19:34

I don't think Aldi ever was cheap. It does appear to offer quite good value for money from a quality perspective though; particularly when you look at things like nappies etc.

Ragwort · 09/07/2017 19:34

I don't think it is as cheap as it used to be.

luckylucky24 · 09/07/2017 19:35

Really depends. I can do a full shop in Sainsburys for a decent price but half a dozen items seem to cost a fortune when I do a "top up".

OuchBollocks · 09/07/2017 19:35

I went there for nappies the other day. Same price as tesco nappies, as it turned out.

chaplin1409 · 09/07/2017 19:36

I don't find aldi or lidl cheaper. And as others have said you still need to shop elsewhere as well as you can't get everything you need.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 09/07/2017 19:36

Our shop in Aldi is marginally cheaper than Asda but we're just talking a few pennies.

OwlinaTree · 09/07/2017 19:36

I think you save money as there is less choice so less impulse buying. That's assuming you avoid the jumble sale in the specials aisle!

I usually go in for nappies and come out with various cycling accessories and children's bits and bobs so I don't save anything!

I agree with pp that morros is getting more expensive though.

MikeUniformMike · 09/07/2017 19:37

I find Aldi much cheaper than Sainsbury's. It depends what you buy. I shop at Waitrose sometimes and find it is a much nicer experience and cheaper. If I do a big shop it will be Aldi.

SleepFreeZone · 09/07/2017 19:37

Their wipes are fabulous.

BrucesTooth · 09/07/2017 19:37

I think it depends how you shop. If you would normally buy branded or finest stuff then it's obviously cheaper to shop somewhere that doesn't sell that stuff, but if you buy value brand/offers/clearance etc then it's not cheaper. Plus the shopping experience is not great. Mind to, I do like to pop into lidl sometimes for the sliced potato salad in yoghurt, can't resist it.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 09/07/2017 19:38

I am in the US and DH and I went into Aldi for the second time yesterday.

We got a pineapple for $1.50 that would have cost $5 in our local supermarket.
Blackberries and raspberries were $1.50 for 8oz that are normally $3.50
Peppers were $2, normally $4
Onions $2, normally $3
Cookies were $2, which I'd normally pay $4 for

Overall we saved about 30% over what we would usually pay.

All the fruit and vegetables were nice quality too.

I'll shift some of my shopping to Aldi, but I'll still go to my regular supermarket too as they treat their employees very well, provide a lot of jobs, and are one of the best companies to work for if you don't have a college degree. I don't know how they are going to compete long term with Aldi though with prices and quality like that.

If I only cared about price, I'd shop Walmart.

somewhereovertherain · 09/07/2017 19:39

Wonder if the drop in the value of the pound has had an effect.

For me I prefer the experience at Aldi, love the speed at the Till and the lack of staff. Also feel the quality is great compared to the crap at Asda and Morrisons.

PringlesInTheFlySpace · 09/07/2017 19:40

My recent Aldi shop

To think Aldi isn't actually that much cheaper?
OwlinaTree · 09/07/2017 19:40

I think morros is good quality compared to asda

user1492023898 · 09/07/2017 19:43

@PringlesInTheFlySpace

I don't trust those comparisons.

If you had shopped at Tesco for the same things, you'd have shopped slightly differently and the net result would have been similar.

That is caveated with your shop not being made up only of brands e.g. Heinz, Sarsons, Hovis etc.

user1492023898 · 09/07/2017 19:44

@OuchBollocks; are the nappies as good though?

Allhallowseve · 09/07/2017 19:45

Ah OK so most are in agreement .
Tbh I was going for own brand stuff today and maybe I got lucky with the discount .
The baby wipes were the same price , fruit salad and meat etc seemed around the same . Even dog food . We are on a tight budget at the min as I'm on maternity leave but I am starting to think we are not saving much AF all and I'm starting to hate the shopping experience to be honest . As pp said the throwing your food in your trolley then repacking takes forever ,the small car park etc

OwlinaTree · 09/07/2017 19:46

I find the nappies very good, no complaints.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 09/07/2017 19:46

I'm noticing Morrisons becoming more expensive too. Tesco seems to suit me at the moment.
My issue with Aldi is that I buy more of the luxury type items (cold meats, Brioche loaf, nice cheese etc) then I would in other supermarkets because they're so well priced. Add that on to my regulars & I'm not really saving anything!
