To think Aldi isn't actually that much cheaper?

I've been an Aldi convert for a while now .
However today I need to pick things up and was close by a Sainsbury's so decided to go there instead of across town to Aldi.
I was shocked that there was hardly any difference in price .
Plus it was a much nicer experience. I always feel like an inconvenience to the staff in Aldi .... either in their way while they are trying to stack shelves or not quick enough at checkout.
I also picked up some pretty good deals in Sainsbury's with meat etc that had been marked down.
So aibu or is it really not that cheap anymore?
Has anyone gone back after being an Aldi convert?

themysterious Here, Aldi pay their staff the living wage afaik and they get good benefits but they do expect them to work fast.
I agree Aldi food has gone up a lot. I usually go to Aldi but have had no time at all this week so did a tesco shop online. I did quite a big shop and it was a similar price to what I spend in Aldi. i was surprised. I will have to do a top up shop as i want to start buying my fruit and meat locally in the butcher and grocers but Id do that anyway with an Aldi shop. I do agree that I think the drop in the pound has had a bigger effect on Aldi than on the home supermarkets. i dont have a lidl near me so cant really comment.

FineSally · 09/07/2017 19:47

I do the odd trip to Aldi but I spend more than I should because I like their frozen ready meals. I don't enjoy the time I spend there though, the aisles are rather narrow & ours seems to attract the sort of people who block your way & are deaf to polite requests to let you pass.

I won't buy their fresh fruit/veg because the quality is far better in Asda or Morrisons & doesn't cost that much more.

In general I find that Asda or Morrisons works out cheaper than Sainsburys. I buy a lot of own label stuff, not the big brands.

SaveMeBarry · 09/07/2017 19:50

I like Aldi for quite a few things but never expect to be able to do my full shop there. There are branded items that we just prefer and fortunately we're not limited to a strict X per week grocery shop.

I think the difference isn't as noticeable now as many of the big supermarkets have price matched their own economy brand to Aldi or Lidl which wasn't always the case. That said, I generally find Aldi products better than the equivalent priced economy supermarket item. Also, they've introduced more items in their "specially selected" range which, while still being cheaper than equivalent elsewhere, isn't the "everything costs half nothing" that people are used to hearing about these stores!

Worth bearing in mind that you can be lucky one day in a supermarket and get reduced bargains but you certainly couldn't depend on those being available next time. Lidl/Aldi tend not to do offers or keep messing about with prices so for those with a strict budget that is likely part of the attraction I'd imagine.

God I sound like I'm paid by them! Grin I'm really not but I still recall how here in Ireland we were being fucked by the well known supermarkets before the German guys came on the scene!

MacaroonMama · 09/07/2017 19:51

We have no car and our nearest supermarket by miles is a Waitrose. DH has worked out when the best reductions are - and they are amazing. Really good quality stuff, organic meat and fish or 'treaty' ready meals we'd never usually buy we get at usually 1/4 - 1/5 of the price, then stick in freezer. Other bits can be more expensive but I also try to go to the market twice a week after a.m. school run to stock up on cheap fruit and veg. Waitrose fancy stuff is too tempting though. For that, Lidl, Aldi and Asda are better!

WankYouForTheMusic · 09/07/2017 19:52

I definitely find Aldi cheaper BUT... I've never been one for the middle aisle. Which I believe is many people's undoing! And it has gone up a bit lately.

I find their fruit and veg loads better than Asda but not as good as Tesco. However the quality seems to vary loads between stores, some people find theirs rots really quick.

user1497566051 · 09/07/2017 19:54

I've occasionally put the content of my Aldi receipt on mySupermarket to make sure it really is cheaper than the big 4 and according to mySuoermarket the big 4 are all approximately 30% more expensive than my till receipt from Aldi. So I'll keep shopping there. I also like that I can do my shop and be home in under an hour, unlike the 2hour stints in Asda I would previously have had.

SaveMeBarry · 09/07/2017 19:55

Ah yes, The Aisle of Wonder. If you can swerve that you'll save a fortune Grin

londonrach · 09/07/2017 19:56

Ldll!!!!! Most expensive the cheapest supermarkets.... sainsburys, asda, waitrose, aldi, tesco then idll in items i buy.

RandomMess · 09/07/2017 19:57

I think the other supermarkets have been absorbing price increases which Aldi and Lidl can't.

londonrach · 09/07/2017 19:57

Sainsbury dearest and ldll cheapest

switswoo81 · 09/07/2017 19:59

I'm not in uk so no Asda etc I find aldi a fraction of the price of our local supermarket and because they don't put offers on treat food I don't impulse buy. I do have a brand new Aldi and Lidl within a ten minute walk.

Topseyt · 09/07/2017 20:00

I tried Aldi for a while. That was a couple of years ago.

It was cheaper, but the quality of the fresh fruit and vegetables was very hit or miss. Often they went off in a day. Nor did I like the virtual Olympic event of getting through the till at warp speed, with my shopping virtually shot at me.

An injured right arm (broken bone which may never fully heal) sustained whilst away on holiday in February 2016 makes sure that I simply cannot keep up with the till speed expected at Aldi, which is stressful.

I have gone back to Tesco. I don't think the price is massively different any more, spending around £80 - £85 to feed four, sometimes five, people each week. I also like the scan and pack system there, and the fresh produce is much better.

WankYouForTheMusic · 09/07/2017 20:01

The few branded items Aldi do aren't necessarily that good value. They charge £1 for warbys white I think, which is pretty standard, but in some supermarkets there'd be 2 for 1 or whatever sometimes, whereas in Aldi there never is. Their own is much cheaper of course, but that's only relevant if that's the one you buy.

PumpkinSpiceEverything · 09/07/2017 20:02

I have been shopping at Aldi for a few years but lately I feel like the focus has shifted from their fresh food to their random-crap-for-sale in the middle of the store, and there's a lot more prepared foods (like pre-marinated, pop-it-in-the-oven meats instead of a good selection of plain old meat) and much less variety in fresh fruit and veg than previously. All in all we've switched to Asda for much of our shop.

But still, the nappies are the best for the price if you ask me.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/07/2017 20:02

I could never get my shop to less than £100 in Sainsburys but rarely spend more than £70 in Aldi. I think it does depend on what you buy. I genuinely don't mind the way the tills work, I prefer to pack in a leisurely fashion at the shelf anyway!

YouHaveBeenSummarilyDismissed · 09/07/2017 20:04

I went in thinking I was going to halve my Ocado shop but they don't sell half of what I buy and what they do sell isn't that much cheaper if at all. And it is a huge inconvenience and time suck over home delivery.

WibbleBoy · 09/07/2017 20:11

It certainly doesn't necessarily work out cheaper. I popped in to grab a few things which I forgot from my main weekly shop, and came out with a mitre saw and collapsible stand.

Laquila · 09/07/2017 20:11

Coincidentally, I went to Aldi this morning and then compared my coats on Ocado, just to see (we've been thinking about starting shopping there) and was actuLly surprised at how much more expensive it was. I was mainly comparing own-brand to own-brand, with a bit of Warbutons, Heinz and the like thrown in (I don't buy a great deal of branded stuff). Milk was the same price but literally everything else I checked was about 25-30% more expensive on Ocado, although I can see the attraction of the delivery!

FWIW, we've used Aldi nappies for years now and o think they're as good as Pampers, maybe just slightly bulkier. Their wipes are brilliant.

JaneEyre70 · 09/07/2017 20:12

Tbh I tried it a few times but found the fruit/veg went over very quickly, there was a very limited selection of food for me (diabetic vegetarian) and that I always ended up needing to go elsewhere. We're Ocado converts here, great range of stuff esp Waitrose, reliable delivery and we pay for a smart pass once a month so deliveries are cheaper. And I hate the way they throw your stuff at you so most of it ends up squashed to hell and then you have to piss about packing it all over again. Not for me. The only thing I do love is the cheese selection (Colliers welsh cheddar is 1.99 in there, 3.99 everywhere else) but it's not worth the aggro.

Whatawaytomakealiving · 09/07/2017 20:19

Dislike the fresh fruit and veg, it goes off so quickly that we end up throwing most of it away. The broccoli is yellow the day after being bought.
I am also convinced that some of the fruit just has no taste ( but is that even possible? ). If I had eaten the strawberries with my eyes shut I would have had no idea what I was eating (and they were mouldy within a day).

YouHaveBeenSummarilyDismissed · 09/07/2017 20:19

😂 WibbleBoy

I think there was someone who came home with a pool that was almost bigger than their garden.

craftsy · 09/07/2017 20:19

Aldo isn't cheap-cheap. It's generally really, really good quality food for similar prices to what the other supermarkets sell their lower quality food for. Same as Lidl.

notaslimceagirl · 09/07/2017 20:19

I still find Aldi much cheaper than other supermarkets.
I do most of my shop at Aldi and get bits from waitrose, Tesco and Asda.
I'm always amazed at how little I am getting in comparison from other supermarkets.

notaslimceagirl · 09/07/2017 20:21

I used to shop with Ocado but I got fed up of special offers being out of stock. I tried them again a couple of months ago and ended up spending over £100 for my shop. I'd never spend anywhere near that much in Aldi!

greendale17 · 09/07/2017 20:21

Not a fan either- low quality and not that much cheaper
