To think Aldi isn't actually that much cheaper?

I've been an Aldi convert for a while now .
However today I need to pick things up and was close by a Sainsbury's so decided to go there instead of across town to Aldi.
I was shocked that there was hardly any difference in price .
Plus it was a much nicer experience. I always feel like an inconvenience to the staff in Aldi .... either in their way while they are trying to stack shelves or not quick enough at checkout.
I also picked up some pretty good deals in Sainsbury's with meat etc that had been marked down.
So aibu or is it really not that cheap anymore?
Has anyone gone back after being an Aldi convert?

Our Lidl isn't much better I gave up there too when the chicken started tasting funny,

The chicken in Lidl tastes rank. The only meat I buy in Lidl are their Deluxe duck breasts and some of their cold meats.

Ha so glad it's not just me. With everything I've just kept telling myself how utsbthe sake stuff in different packets eye how it's the same meat that goes to Waitrose etc and i honest my just can't see how it can be true. Everything, the neat the cheeses the fruit and veg it all just taste a weird. Not how you ecoevt a pepper or a cucumber to taste. Almost as if you are eating props from a movie set and not the real thing. Nothing in either of them tastes like it's supposed to.

Cutesbabasmummy · 10/07/2017 11:44

Nappies and wipes are much cheaper at Lidl and Aldi as are soft drinks, crisps, cereal bars and some alcoholic drinks. I think you just need to know your prices.

Everytimeref · 10/07/2017 11:49

Lidls steaks are amazing. Perfectly happy with the chicken. Fruit and veg much better than asda.
I do a mix of Lidl and Tesco. Have generally found food costs are increasing.

I don't know if it is poorer areas per se but more that if it the turnover is high then the shop will overall be more successful as they will have fresh produce, in date items and not run out of stock?

I live in a fairly poor (but very mixed) working class area in the grim North. There isn't a Waitrose within about 10 miles, but within a 5 mile radius of the town centre we have 3 Tesco, 2 Morrisons, 3 Asda, 1 Sainsbury, 1 Aldi & 1 Lidl. There is also an Iceland & a FarmFoods who seem to be well used. Aldi & Lidl always seem busy. I have come to the conclusion that the people in this area who use Aldi regularly do not eat much in the way of fruit, veg & eggs, as the fresh stuff doesn't last more than a day or two, & the eggs are always very short date. Incidentally, I find longer dates (for things like prepacked fruit & veg, and milk & eggs) in Asda than I do in Sainsbury's, so perhaps it's got more to do with their distribution schedules...

I have to confess I've never really thought about the logistics of stock rotation in the food chain!

BabyShock · 10/07/2017 12:45

I go to whichever supermarket I live by, which is now Aldi but used to be Lidl. Aldi bring out new products every day it seems. Theyve just started doing powders to put in smoothies which can be really nutritious. Their soy milk is only 59p and their fruit and veg is always good quality. I dont buy meat or dairy so dont know about those prices. I think Id prefer to live by a Lidl again though... maybe theyre cheaper. But things go up constantly and will keep going up unfortunately.

Goldenhandshake · 10/07/2017 13:24

Combo of Asda and Aldi here, Asda we only get a handful of items that Aldi do not stock. I find Aldi far cheaper than Sainsburys, Tesco etc.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/07/2017 13:28

If Lidl's meat tastes rank, it's because people constantly leave the frodges open or when they change theor minds, they just leave the meat anywhere on the shelf. I ised to go to a couple fo local lidl's a lot and everytime I saw examples of that.

Yes, I did feel like a total pedant writing my little "stock dissertation" there but I only started noticing it after we started travelling around the UK and booking self-catering and trying to use Ocado everywhere. I was shocked at how variable the service is across the country. There are some areas where the Ocado service is truly dire. Must be the same of Lidl and Aldi.

Otherpeoplesteens · 10/07/2017 14:06

I do most of our grocery shopping at Lidl and a bit at Aldi; I don't think I've stepped foot in Asda, Tesco or Sainsbury's since Christmas. Prices have crept up, but unless they've come down noticeably in the major supermarkets then Lidl/Aldi are still considerably cheaper.

I find Aldi's fresh produce can be a bit hit-and-miss on the longevity front, but the real nuisance is that every time I find a product I like at a good price it seems to disappear from the shelves and never come back, or is replaced by a more expensive option.

Ollivander84 · 10/07/2017 14:12

Our Aldi is awful, the Lidl is great. Luckily Lidl and Morrisons are v close together so I tend to get most at Morrisons then top up at Lidl. Probably seems weird way of doing it but I like the cleaning stuff, the loose salted almonds, the baby wipes, cheeses, sliced continental meats etc

Scrumpington · 10/07/2017 14:14

My Morrison's is great, the fruit and veg aisle is the best by a mile compared to all the other supermarkets.

mowglik · 10/07/2017 14:18

Our ALDI shop is about 30% cheaper than a similar shop at Tesco (home delivery) and that's buying mostly from their specially selected range

A couple of rogue products seem to be more expensive than the equivalent in Tesco/Sainsbury's but generally its way cheaper

specialsubject · 10/07/2017 14:19

Our town has a new lidl. Gave it a try but found it pricey and poorly stocked. Also too far out, the aldi is in the town centre so can do other errands as well as the shop without moving the car.

The emptiness of the lidl car park implies I'm not the only one.

lalaloopyhead · 10/07/2017 14:22

I like Morrisons for home delivery as they are rarely any subs. If I go to the shops I do like Lidl and I definitely think I get more for my money there. I like the sandwich meats and I think the majority of their stuff is good quality - we love the lamb steaks. I also find there is less to buy and even with a trip down the aisle of tat I still spend less. I went to Asda a couple of weeks ago and was shocked at how pricey their stuff was in comparison and the shop is so big I have lost the will to live half way round.
We are eagerly awaiting an Aldi to open near to us, which I will use for the convenient location. I know a couple of people that swear by Aldi (now that it is socially acceptable to shop there!) and drive the 12 miles to the nearest one (when we have 4 supermarkets in our town) - I really don't understand that!

Allhallowseve · 10/07/2017 14:31

Maybe it all depends on where you live and what you buy. Which for me changes every now and then due to having young children.
It prob sounds ridiculous but I go food shopping while dh has my two ds so it's a bit of time off for me Blush
I just found the hour I spent yesterday in Sainsbury's car more enjoyable than the usual Aldi rush . Then when paying was surprised at the cost . Have to admit am much more of a savvy spender now than when I used to shop at Sainsbury's a few years ago when just me and dh and 2 full time wages.

Ifailed and giles we have 2 branches of Aldi in our area and yes the fruit and veg just don't last - also meat and fish go off while well within date. This is well known locally and most people that I know avoid buying fresh food at Aldi- waste of time and money.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 10/07/2017 16:30

Sam - LCBC is 'low carb bootcamp'. It's a diet thread on MN (in the low carb section). I follow a version of it, but I don't participate on the threads though.

Eolian · 10/07/2017 16:41

I don't live in a busy urban area, I live in Cumbria near the Lancashire border. But my local Aldi is great. The one I go to is in a small, not very busy town which also has a large Tesco, and a lovely Booths right next to Aldi. The big Tesco car park often looks rather empty, while Aldi is always pretty full. I often pop next door to Booths for the couple of things Aldi don't stock (and pick up my free Booths coffee at the same time!). In fact, the Aldi in the bigger, more urban place where I used to live was not nearly as good as this one.

Notso · 10/07/2017 18:38

My local is so busy the fruit and veg is never on the shelves long enough to go off.

An Aldi opened 5 mins from my house. I went on day one it had been open a couple of hours there was rotten fruit and veg on the shelves.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/07/2017 18:44

Lol now you must be lying not that like can't possibly true Hmm

My rabbits ate well when we shopped there is all I can say.

wiltingfast · 10/07/2017 21:00

I know what you mean op, but the shop in Aldi takes less time meaning time for you to have a coffee in my world anyway GrinBrewBrew

BusterGonad · 10/07/2017 21:11

I particularly like Lidi's as the choice is limited so I don't over spend on crap I didn't intend to buy and if I take my 8 year old he doesn't nag me for something from the toy aisle. I also find it so much more relaxing than Asda and the like as it's usually less hectic and seems to have a better class of shopper (in my area anyway).
I do enjoy the middle aisle too. You just never know what you are gong to find! Grin
