AIBU?

AIBU to not make him his fish pie?

(Only lighthearted, slightly!)

My boyfriends working away from tomorrow. I stupidly said he could choose whatever he wanted for his dinner today. He chose fish pie.
He loves it, I can take it or leave it, we don't have it often because it's such a pain to make.
It's roasting hot here today and I just can't be bothered with the faff!!

To give full disclosure, he got up this morning with DD, even though it was my turn. He's taken her swimming first thing and he's now painting/repairing a wall and the arch over the door. I'm sat looking on mumsnet and drinking shandy playing with dd in the garden.

I should make the fucking fish pie shouldn't I?
Unless anyone knows a ready made fish pie that tastes just like a homemade one, I could run out and buy.....

What recipe do you use? Is it possible to simplify it, so it's not so much of a faff? I use frozen fish pie mix from Morrisons, cook it in milk, whack a load of mash and cheese on top. Job done :)

Doesn't take very long to make, just the time to make the sauce really? I use breadcrumbs on top and serve with mash, cba with making a mash top, saves more time Smile

Yep! M & S, Waitrose or Cook. Totally cheat.

I do that quite often. Promise to do some thing nice, but then I'm to tired/busy to do it. I don't see it as a problem, it's just life. You can make up for it on a day when you've got more time.

God do a cheats one, fish pie mix, parsley sauce mix, chuck ready mash on top

You've got to make it!

Tesco one from the chiller bit is good. Proper chunks of fish and good mash. He won't know. Grin

You have to make it but you can buy really really nice frozen cheese sauce and frozen mash as well as fish pie mix, echo significantly reduces the faffage - cheese sauce (imho) tastes just like home made - as does the frozen mash! Job done!

Which, not echo!

M and S or Waitrose is your friend.

Try the Food Love stories recipe from Tesco website.
You don't need to make a sauce, just use creme fraiche with either Lemon or mustard added.
And it's topped with cauliflower which you merely blanch so no pot of potatoes boiling making kitchen steamy.
It's gorgeous

Waitrose & Sainsbury's do a Charlie Bingham's fresh fish pie that's really good. Tastes pretty homemade to me.

Yep, you have to do it although a good fish pie is a massive faff. The only short cut I know that wouldn't ruin it is good quality prepared mash. The Tesco Maris Piper one is nice. Apart from that you are on your own!!!

That's not just life, that's horrible. To just keep making promises then letting people down. And she's got plenty of time by her own admission.

Op. Yeah make the pie...you promised, he's done his bit.

I've tried m&s and Waitrose and he knows! He can even tell if I've made it or my mum has and it's the same recipe, apparently I make it better Hmm
Same if I use ready mash or anything.
Plus DD had to eat it and I'm not sure on salt etc in ready ones and I've got all the stuff in to make it!

Just been to take him a drink and he said he can't wait for his fish pie.

Poach/microwave/fry the fish
Bung a tin of a plain-y- type soup (I like mushroom) in a dish. Add chopped up fish. Add peas and sweetcorn.
Bung mash on top and bung in oven for a while.

As meals go, it's one of the easier ones.

Put fish and spuds in steamer , make cheesy mash , put fish in oven dish , pour over ready made cheese sauce , handful of prawns and put mash on top , steam some broccoli while you brown the fish pie under the grill

Do each element separately, poach the fish now, do the sauce later, mash even later, then when you assemble it at the end it will feel less of a faff and you won't have been hot and bothered in the kitchen all afternoon. And put capers in it if you have some, that makes the best fish pie IMHO.

Sorry Back but that sounds rank. Soup? Yuck.

Yes I've got plenty of time Josephine I've not done anything today really, well I painted my nails and hung some washing out. Oh and I keep stopping dd from eating grass.

Unfortunately the cheats versions won't be any good, he loves the traditional faffy one. Why I ever made it for him in the first place, I'm seriously wondering!
And who ever thought to make a fish pie!!

Sounds like you've had a nice easy day OP. Have you got all the ingredients in for it?

I've never made a fish pie, but you've promised and are able to deliver, so you have to.

I've also never promised DH any particular meal.

This goes down a treat in my house. Super easy. I also put hard boiled eggs in it.
