AIBU?

AIBU to not make him his fish pie?

(Only lighthearted, slightly!)

My boyfriends working away from tomorrow. I stupidly said he could choose whatever he wanted for his dinner today. He chose fish pie.
He loves it, I can take it or leave it, we don't have it often because it's such a pain to make.
It's roasting hot here today and I just can't be bothered with the faff!!

To give full disclosure, he got up this morning with DD, even though it was my turn. He's taken her swimming first thing and he's now painting/repairing a wall and the arch over the door. I'm sat looking on mumsnet and drinking shandy playing with dd in the garden.

I should make the fucking fish pie shouldn't I?
Unless anyone knows a ready made fish pie that tastes just like a homemade one, I could run out and buy.....

This thread is killing me! I want your fish pie too, Emboo.

Can I come for dinner?

BackforGood · 09/07/2017 15:46

Try it Constance - it's a lot nicer than you might expect Grin

nakedscientist · 09/07/2017 15:47

Embo Trick your self that you might do it. I'll just peal the spuds. I'll just boil them. Sip shandy...I'll just find the dish. Sit down. I'll just get the fish out....sip shandy....MN.... May as well do the sauce....

It'll be done in no time Grin

Emboo19 · 09/07/2017 15:47

Yes Constance he got everything when he did the shop yesterday.

I know I have to do it!
If I can just motivate myself to get up and go inside.

Emboo19 can we have the recipe please? I do love a fish pie!

ConstanceCraving · 09/07/2017 15:51

I'll take your word Back Grin

Pour yourself a wine, put some music on and make the pie OP. Wine

CaretakerToNuns · 09/07/2017 15:58

Why can't you make it together? If he wants the Fish Pie so much then surely he'd be willing to help. Or is he one of those husbands who refuses to step foot into the kitchen?

Cailleach666 · 09/07/2017 15:59

No kids I am guessing?

ConstanceCraving · 09/07/2017 16:00

Sounds like he's quite a hands on husband Caretaker to be fair.

nothingreallymatters · 09/07/2017 16:00

If you don't want the faf of mashing the pots, just slice them roughly before boiling, drain and tip on top of the fish mix, spread them out a bit and top with loads of cheese.

If my dp had promised to make me pea and prawn risotto for dinner (my favourite food in all the world) and I had been busy all day and he hadn't, I probably wouldn't take very kindly to the suggestion that I helped make it..............

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 09/07/2017 16:02

I would rather go hungry than ever eat a fish pie so you can have a very biased YANBU from me if you like? But in reality, yeah, you kind of have to make this now. I'm feeling smug because when I did yht shopping earlier I picked up a roast in the bag chicken. DH is delighted and I'll barely have to lift a finger! Grin

Emboo19 · 09/07/2017 16:04

I think it's very basic fish pie recipe Waiting
I use salmon, cod and smoked haddock poached first in milk and a bit of butter.
Homemade parsley sauce.
Mash potatoes.
Mix it all together and add the prawns, peas and sweetcorn.
Then spread the mash on top, and put it in the oven. Add a bit of grated cheese for the last 10mins.

It doesn't sound so bad writing it down, I'll start in a minute or two.......

OP i really fancy fish pie for dinner now damn you!

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 09/07/2017 16:07

Fish pie is a doddle! Poach the fish in milk while the tates are boiling, whack half the fish into the dish, halved boiled eggs on top, throw a good handful of frozen peas and rest of fish in the dish. Thicken the milk with cornflour and add to the dish. Cover with mash and bake for 20 minutes.

Emboo19 · 09/07/2017 16:08

No he cooked last night Caretaker and he's doing jobs at the moment and as the ironing and packing his stuff to do yet!

One dd Cailleach 9 months, she'll be quite happy watching me and playing with the wooden spoons. Unfortunately a bit young to help peel the spuds though!

I don't make mash cos I hate washing the pan afterwards.
I boil the pots then dice them and use those as topping

Flyinggeese · 09/07/2017 16:17

That sounds absolutely gorgeous!

Aquamarine1029 · 09/07/2017 16:21

This isn't just about a fish pie. It's about keeping your word. You said you would cook anything he wanted. He chose a fish pie. Make the pie.

dementedma · 09/07/2017 16:30

I never make a sauce - use tubs of Philly and/or creme fraiche.

stevie69 · 09/07/2017 16:37

Make him his pie; it's the right thing to do. He sounds like a lovely boyfriend Smile.

Dawnedlightly · 09/07/2017 16:39

Have you made it yet? 😉

GolyHuacamole · 09/07/2017 16:41

Make the pie and reward yourself with a glass of wine Wine

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 09/07/2017 16:45

time saving fish pie....

put your veg in the bottom of the dish (i use frozen peas or steamed spinach...what are you thinking with sweetcorn? ;) )
cut up fish and arrange....do not poach it...just raw.
prawns too, if you like them
boiled egg, likewise
make a really thick sauce and pour over fish ...I like mine with a splidge of wholegrain mustard or parsley, and quite a lot of double cream
Add your mash and cheese on top

Into oven until the mash is lovely and golden

I never pre cook the fish, it makes it over done and stinks the house out. And you only have the pan for the sauce and the pan for the mash to wash up.

Emboo19 · 09/07/2017 16:48

I've peeked the potatoes!!!

Just stopped to admire the view, the boyfriends now shirtless and playing with DD in the garden. Will start the sauce and fish now.....

He likes sweetcorn!! I do add mustard to the sauce.
