It's not about the child, it's about the parents inability to cope with his probable death.

As a society, the more our medical capabilities advance, the more we assume there will be a cure for everything and are in denial about death.

Worse, the precedent this case sets, GOSH and other hospitals can't afford to keep these children alive on this basis.

My heart goes out to the family, any family, but they seem to ignore that he is and will always be suffering. That is the cruelty here. Sad

Doubledottvremote · 09/07/2017 00:51

The ones with the big blanket over him you can see his face and neck are really swollen. Poor poor boy.

Doubledottvremote · 09/07/2017 00:52

There were wonderful GOSH documentaries a few years ago about it maud they should show them again. Although ca wouldn't see the hard work they'd just see that sometimes they wanted to stop treatment and therefore were murderers.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 09/07/2017 00:53

Another thing dont get is there's now a event for a rally outside the court house and people asking about live streams..really?! Need to step away from that group but it's just getting so bizzare the mentality behind it all

RJnomore1 · 09/07/2017 00:55

They did get it wrong with ashya though in that the treatment seems to have worked and it will give lots of desperate people possibly false hope. They said the proposed treatment would not help the boy.

That's not a criticism it's a statement of fact in understanding why people mistrust institutions.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 00:56

Cheers folks.

OMG that is really worrying. He does not look good.

What kind of existence is this? Sad

user1498726699 · 09/07/2017 00:56

Have they said what they need further donations/profits from 'goodies' sold via their online shop for, if medical treatment in the US is going to be free. Is it for transportation to the US if they win? It does not seem very transparent when the money goes straight into the parents account and I hate to think of vulnerable/elderly people giving money they can ill afford if it's not needed.

Surprised that the US doc never came over before if he was so sure he could help him. How could he expect a desperately ill baby to be taken to him? Surely it would have been easier to transport equipment than the child?

nocoolnamesleft · 09/07/2017 01:16

Oh, fuck, he really is oedematous now, isn't he, poor sod.

Regarding Ashya we don't actually know yet. The reason they advised the treatment they did was to have the best chance of non-recurrence. Really need to at least get to the 5 year mark before knowing if GOSH was tragically right...

RJnomore1 · 09/07/2017 01:19

Nocool that's fair comment sorry

opinionatedfreak · 09/07/2017 01:24

Ashya King was different. The NHs proposed treatment was more extensive.

It carried higher risks of Side effects but the oncology team thought it had a lower risk of relapse of the malignancy.

No one will know whether he is going to be ok for another few years and he might not relapse at all.

Ceto · 09/07/2017 02:31

Where I struggle to understand the parents in this case is the fact that they've appointed PR people and they have all this merchandise selling. I suppose I could understand that they feel that publicity will help the cause, but Charlie Gard car toys?

Live web cam of Christ the Redeemer in Rio. There's an option to view time lapse of last 24 hours. It certainly doesn't appear that there is a blue light anywhere to me.

It's mass hysteria, isn't it? This is a prime example of 'mob mentality'. It's not only terrible because of the situation, it's scary to realize that it will only take one member of that mob to scream loud enough or choose the right volatile words and there may very well be violence of some kind.

ChattyLion · 09/07/2017 03:57

How can anyone seriously press release that GOSH have 'denied him care'? As for 'denying him prayer'..?!
Can anyone really say that this poor little baby is going to be able to take any comfort from being prayed over at his bedside by strangers?
This unspeakable situation for the child and family seems to be being made even worse, because so many competing interests (beyond the child's) have been brought into it.
I worry a lot for his poor parents after baby Charlie is gone. They seem very vulnerable to manipulation of their grief, as many of us might well be in such a terrible situation as this.

Incitatis · 09/07/2017 04:21

With that level of water retention he can't survive for much longer and it is sickening watching him deteriorate like this when he could have gone with some dignity and an end to his suffering months ago.

I'm finding this CA thing quite sinister tbh. It's a terrible thing when people like that can exert such an influence over such a grave situation. The GOSH staff must be tearing their hair out. How demeaning to be dictated to by such a bunch of utter fools.

numberseven · 09/07/2017 05:54

I'm outside the UK and the only place where I've seen Charlie Gard talked about is Mumsnet. So I don't think there are international landmarks lit in blue in his honor. Those are old pictures. Strange.

Inkanta · 09/07/2017 06:10

I don't think there needs to be another thread on Mumsnet with lots of judgemental opinions. Feels intrusive.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 09/07/2017 06:18

Say he does improve by the 10% they're claiming, what's the long term prognosis? A 90% chance of no improvement doesn't sound like much at all. So do they truly think Charlie will grow up and be completely recovered

I have a child with profound difficulties and I was horrified at the puncture of the little boy in America who's father said was leading a normal life. Why would anyone want that for their child?

I think its time Charlie was made a ward of court because its obvious his parents aren't able to comprehend very much with regards to the reality of his condition.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 09/07/2017 06:21

picture not puncture.

LapinR0se · 09/07/2017 06:53

I don't think they are saying he will improve by 10%, it's more that there is a 10% chance of improvement.

Alittlepotofrosie · 09/07/2017 06:56

I don't think charlie will be able to hold out much longer whatever the court decides. He is so swollen poor child.

GabsAlot · 09/07/2017 06:57

wtf is a petition being handd in for

so gosh turn round and say sorry we were wrong becaus youve got som signatures?!

thats deluded

notarehearsal · 09/07/2017 07:21

I think it is actually very very hard to imagine just how desperate it can feel to believe your child is going to die and to do / say anything to keep that child with you. This may not always be in the best interests of the child. I can remember making deals in my head with God / the Devil, anything if they would just please allow my child to live. I didn't care how damaged my child would be in the future, I just wanted my flesh and blood to live. Totally selfish but, understandable I believe.
My daughter had numerous operations at GOSH through her whole childhood but was only in ITU after open heart surgery. It's an unreal, different world in there and I'd imagine the parents are living in a state of constant trauma. Once a parent has experienced this degree of trauma I don't think they can ever be the same again. The fear is indescribable
Sometimes it's hard to feel empathy when looking in to a situation.
I wonder what I would do if this scenario was one I was living through

RMC123 · 09/07/2017 07:23

Really need to at least get to the 5 year mark before knowing if GOSH was tragically right...

GOSH had nothing to do with Asha King. It was Southampton Hospital that treated him.

The two cases are completely different. It is oversimplifying complex cases to compare them in anyway. Unfortunately I see it hasn't stopped Asha King's father commenting that 'it makes no logical sense' for GOSH to deny Charlie this treatment. So the fact he is in multiple organ failure, has irreversible brain damage, can't breathe unaided isn't 'logical sense.' I am disappointed he has got involved.

This is now ridiculous and scary. The picture of that little boy is heart breaking. For anyone to describe a child so swollen as 'chubby and cute' and then be praised to the skies for doing so is disturbing and wrong.
Picketing a Hospital is just wrong. Especially a children's hospital. Charlie is not the only patient there. He is certainly not the only patient who is critically or terminally ill. Where is the great compassion of Charlie's Army for these patients? Or are they not high profile enough? Presumably that doesn't get them enough Facebook likes or 'Well done Hun!'
Hopefully it will be as pathetically attended as all the other protests and a couple of Bobbies will love them on. Then they can go and sit in the nearest MacDonalds and post about conspiracy and Police brutality. Should keep them busy for a while.
Charlie's Army is made up of keyboard warriors who like nothing better than drama in their lives as long as it is at other people's expense. Empty lives and idle hands.

As for the blue monuments, they are all weeks old from Autism awareness week, including the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Ellie56 · 09/07/2017 07:41

I would think the stupid petition will go in the nearest bin after it is handed in..
After the inevitable happens I think serious questions need to be asked why this whole debacle has been strung out for so long. The original decision was made 3 months ago and poor Charlie is still lying there suffering. If this new court hearing could be arranged within 2 days how come the appeals couldn't have been arranged as quickly?

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 09/07/2017 08:02

There's another pic. It's not that photo that he looks bloated in
