I know. And that's what makes me uncomfortable with these people. What happened to Terri Shiavo is very controversial because she was starved to death in their eyes, however people want to view it and justify the reasons. I'm making no judgement on that. But this isn't happening in Charlie's case and I think these people getting involved is muddying the waters so much more.

SadGuru · 09/07/2017 23:25

It is sad when children need someone else to put their needs before their parents' needs. It is no-win situation for this third party and GOSH are doing this job to the best of their ability.

I work in the NHS but in a different specialty and not with children. Lot of the patients are distant from their families while a lot of them have a supportive family that work with the NHS for the best possible outcome for their son / daughter. They often stand up for their son/daughter and ensure their needs are met but equally put their foot down and ensure their son/daughter works with the help being offered.

Sadly it is not uncommon to see some where the family is their worst enemy. There are parents who put their own emotional needs ahead of their child's needs. They often undermine the staff trying to help their child because they believe they know what will help their child the best and they believe anything else the staff do is harming their child. They often seek multiple second and third opinions. Then they proceed to ignore all of them except the one which supports their view. They take up a lot of the staff time with constant phone calls and meeting for updates, writing complaints to PALS, CQC, etc which the staff have to respond at length. Any number of meetings, expert opinions, support, professional literature does not change their views. It breaks our heart to see the adverse outcome these patients have due to their parents' interference. Yes the parents are concerned and love their child but are blind to their own negative influence. Most people who work in NHS come across such parents at some point during their lifetime.

But in this case the publicising through media and social network has taken this to the extreme. I genuinely feel for the staff dealing with this child and his family. I can't imagine the stress they must be facing since the decision was made to not treat actively.

I don't dispute the grief the parents are experiencing. But I don't know what to make of this constant media updates, merchandise sales and agitating people against GOSH. How can any of this help their son?

ZerbaPadnaTigre · 09/07/2017 23:27

How can he be feeling pain & suffering but at the same time be brain dead and have no brain activity ? That ain't possible it's either one or the other ?

I haven't seen anybody claim that he is brain dead. The hospital say he has significant brain damage. His parents believe it's not as bad as they say it is.

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:28

babapinksheep, he is suffering if he is being kept alive by machines.

flimflaminurjams · 09/07/2017 23:30

"Can't somebody stop the madness?"

How much praying did Rev Mahoney do with the family as opposed to posing for selfies and publicising his gofundme? (Is it just me or does anyone else just find it repulsive?)

The parents look ill -so thin. It won't be long before one of them collapses and that will be GOSH's fault as well too will it? Why isn't anyone stopping them from doing all this mad stuff with American pastors and ill informed docs and what not.

That poor baba.

Those staff must have the patience of saints. I honestly wonder who the family are going to drag in next to publicise the case?

I pray for the right decision tomorrow in the courts.

PS. I made a hotel booking with a well known hotel chain this week and their nominated charity partner is GOSH. It gives an option to make a donation to the charity via the booking. I publicise this, not to big myself up, but in the hope that GOSH's fundraising is not affected detrimentally because of this circus.

GlitterDustFairy · 09/07/2017 23:30

@babapinksheep

He isn't brain dead. The latest GOSH suggests catastrophic brain damage but this doesn't mean brain death. It depends on what parts of the brain are damaged, there is the possibility that he can still feel pain.
To be diagnosed Brain Stem Death a series of strict tests have to be performed and they have to be performed twice, separately by two different doctors of at lest registrar level. However, a person is legally classified as being dead at the time of the first set of tests if there is no response and this is the time recorded on the death certificate.

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:30

StrangeLookingParasite, I could not have chosen the word circus better myself, because that is what it is and what its become.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:31

OMG Shock I have just looked at the Charlie's Army facebook page, and it's shocking to read. One deluded poster put this:

"Next time someone tries to argue with you about quality of life, quote Professor Stephen Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA - someone who is both profoundly disabled and also one of the smartest men on the planet. 32 years ago it was recommended his life support be removed when he became unwell - his wife refused. Look at what Prof. Hawking has achieved since."

And many posts have awful spelling errors 'it mite of bin better if they ad not gone there.' Shock

Charlie keyrings for sale Confused AND T-shirts and so on?! WTAF?!

And where is the money going?

The women on there are deluded, and it's terrifying.

I dread to think what shit's gonna go down if when the court says tomorrow that Charlie must die.

yolofish · 09/07/2017 23:33

I am the chair of a brain cancer (glioblastoma) charity. All I can say is:if there was medication that could bridge the blood-brain barrier, they would be in place by now.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/07/2017 23:33

No one has said he is brain dead.

My worry would be as he can't see , hear, move, swallow or cry he cannot give any visible indication whether or not he is in pain. He is not however in a coma or a vegetative state.

Is it possible, given his condition, to determine if the pain receptors work?

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:34

Notknownatthisaddress, maybe thats just what needs to happen, because the sooner its over and done with the better, or if not go to court and take away custody from Charlies parents, leave him i careof the hospital, it is just proing along the agony the longer its left.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:34

And I have to ask; popes, archbishops, presidents you name it, are fighting for the rights of this one baby.

WHY? Confused

100's, maybe 1000's of babies a day are ill, (and die) all over the world. Yet these people have gone into meltdown over this one baby. Why?

Serious question.

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:35

Notknownatthisaddress, because they have made a fuss and stamped their feet? what happens if they have another baby and this happens??? does that mean they go through it all again???

BabsGanoush · 09/07/2017 23:37

Surely MDDS is so rare that any doctors would probably know of each other, and what research was been carried out around the world. Where have these new researchers popped up From?

And why are Charlies parents disagreeing with the medical profession? Where has their opposing view come from? If I break my leg I don't argue its just a sprain.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:37

They are also thanking ITALY for lighting a fountain up blue. But I have been to Italy - and Spain, and in both those countries, they have coloured fountains in the cities.

Is there any evidence that 'ITALY' did this especially for Charlie?

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:39

because they have made a fuss and stamped their feet

Even so @muckypup, it seems like an excessive amount of attention on one baby.

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:42

You know what, if they go to court tomorow because they have had extra time to say goodbye already, and its a turn off life support immediately, I wonder if charlies mum, would wish that she wouldnt have wasted her time campaigning. because thats what could happen, at the end of the day, they were given an extension so family could visit to say goodbye. they have had that time now. its gone.

muckypup73 · 09/07/2017 23:43

Notknownatthisaddress, by the way, I totally agree with you, can you imagine the children at that hospital who are dying at the moment?or having life suport withdrawn seeing all this shit????I would be one angry fucker if I had a child in there!!!

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:48

Yeah @muckypup, I really feel for anyone with a child at GOSH too. Especially (as someone said earlier,) if yours is very ill and you have to switch off life support. These women are saying anyone who does that is a murderer.

Nasty.

11122aa · 09/07/2017 23:49

I can see some minor celebrities being the next to visit the hospital.

fakenamefornow · 09/07/2017 23:49

Even so @muckypup, it seems like an excessive amount of attention on one baby.

I think it's because the picture being painted is that if only this child can have this treatment he can grow up and lead a normal life and that basically the hospital want to kill him.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 09/07/2017 23:50

According to the papers, some American congressmen plan to try and rush through legislation to make Charlie an American citizen, so no matter what the British courts say he can then be removed from the UK and treated.

Words just fail. I'm just waiting for Kim Jong Un to turn up and find a way to get his money's worth out of this poor child too.

thatdearoctopus · 09/07/2017 23:51

Well, they're also claiming that Christ the Redeemer in Rio has been lit up blue for them, but apparently that's from World Autism Awareness Day.
Not sure about the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 23:53

It's all very tacky isn't it @misshavishamsleftdaffodil ? Sad

It makes me cringe.

thatdearoctopus · 09/07/2017 23:54

Forgive me, but what the fuck has it got to do with America?
