www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1163805/80-lawyers-refused-help-save-Baby-OT-leaving-parents-fend-themselves.html spotted this when reading Charlotte Wyatt case. This is also a mitochondrial disorder.

DarthMaiden · 09/07/2017 18:57

So very sad to hear the news about Loney's DDSadFlowers

Maudlinmaud · 09/07/2017 18:57

I suppose the million dollar question is why are Charlies parents not of the belief that their son has significant brain damage.
How have the hospital and the parents come to such different conclusions?
This is the issue that causes me the most concern. Is there truth in either of these beliefs or is it a murky area where no answer exists. It seems very complex.

Crunchymum · 09/07/2017 18:58

Sorry to wade in. I've avoided these threads as the whole situation is grating on me now (barring the one thread I started but didn't mention CG in name)

Who the fuck are the 350k signatories of the petition? Was it a FB thing? (I'm not on FB). Will it actually achieve anything?

I'm beginning to feel rather unsympathetic and actually quite angry towards the CG supporters now.

Maudlinmaud · 09/07/2017 18:59

@Lonelymummyof1 you where lovely and so full of hope in the other thread. I'm so saddened to hear the news Flowers

Doubledottvremote · 09/07/2017 19:08

Charlotte's Dad has posted on the CA page. Seems she is still alive from what he said.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/07/2017 19:09

Please could I ask a question of anyone who's been in a paediatric ICU?

Are the patients in individual room-type areas, or do they tend to be "open style" wards? I realise one benefit of open wards is that nurses can observe several patients at a time, but I think (?) they have a nurse each in ICU, so this probably wouldn't apply

It's just that I'm wondering how much disruption other patients and families are really having as a result of all this ...

getahellyeah · 09/07/2017 19:13

I have been wondering that too, puzzled. I was going to ask the same question. One of the more recent pictures of the parents next to Charlie shows a curtain deem behind them. I'm not sure if this means he's in an 'open plan' ward.

stella23 · 09/07/2017 19:13

Can I ask s question, I'm very naive about medical procedures.

But why was Charlie put on a ventilator on the first place? His condition is terminal, is anyone able to explain? Thanks

Rhodiolia · 09/07/2017 19:17

When my nephew was in pead ICU, it was an open ward with 4 patients, with 3 private rooms around the ward which led straight into the open ward. This was Yorkhill Childrens hospital though.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/07/2017 19:18

That's interesting, getahellyeah. I saw the curtain myself in a recent picture but didn't notice any other parents ... and that's if they were parents of course, rather than doctors

As you say, this might suggest Charlie's in a more "open" area, which makes me further wonder if the equipment would allow a move to somewhere more private if it was thought necessary?

sodablackcurrant · 09/07/2017 19:18

Sad for everyone.

Every day there are parents (and others) faced with the decision to withdraw life support based on clinical evidence.

I think this case is taking away from those who have and are facing this decision as we speak. No Armies for them, just dignity and a dreadful scenario.

My thoughts are with those other people who have no army behind them but are faced with the decision by themselves.

Circus is right. So sorry for everyone, but this is becoming out hand now.

goodbyestranger · 09/07/2017 19:18

My DD was in an open plan intensive care unit but I think the GOSH unit has separate suites.

goodbyestranger · 09/07/2017 19:19

Who were those men whispering to the mum when she spoke this afternoon, telling her what to say?

Doubledottvremote · 09/07/2017 19:20

Puzzled I don't know about gosh but there are often both open types and private rooms. Private rooms for infections/immunocompromised patients or perhaps moved when at end of life. Although often they would just shut the rest of the ward to visitors.

It would be disruptive anyway as you have to buzz in and out. Go through or past a waiting area probably. And brining in random American pastors when other families will only be allowed immediate fanily in will grate.

goodbyestranger · 09/07/2017 19:21

The intensive care unit we were in was in Louisville, not the UK.

notarehearsal · 09/07/2017 19:34

My dd was in. Single room in gosh itu ( cardiac)

annandale · 09/07/2017 19:37

Stella, when the baby's breathing deteriorated I'm not sure he had even been diagnosed. Maybe he had but even so, the assumption quite rightly is always to treat, the decision not to treat or to continue respiratory support or organ support is a major one, as this whole case demonstrates.

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 19:41

WTF is that 'tits out for Charlie' about? (on twitter.) Shock

That should seriously be deleted. Nasty. Hmm

@Lonelymummyof1 I am so sorry, I hope your baby will be OK. Sad

Notknownatthisaddress · 09/07/2017 19:42

If you look at the pic on twitter properly, the girl doing the tits out for Charlie thing is COMPLETELY naked! You can see her lady garden too! Shock

LogicalPsycho · 09/07/2017 19:44

So there's a very real chance then, that Charlie is on an ICU Bay Ward with other terribly ill children & their parents, who will be reading the "Switching off life support is Murder" message daily, then have to share a room with the people saying it?
If so, how absolutely dreadful for them.

Maudlinmaud · 09/07/2017 19:46

Notknown as a pp mentioned that twitter user is clearly unwell or a troll or both. They have sent naked tweets to a lot of celebs and even sent one to a family in mourning over their child.

11122aa · 09/07/2017 19:48

@Lonelymummyof1. Saddened to hear that news.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 09/07/2017 19:50

"The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is also known as Seahorse Ward, has 17 beds and is forchildren and young people who need special care for serious medical or surgical conditions.

We have a small number of cubicles, but most beds are on in the open ward."

Allhallowseve · 09/07/2017 19:53

In paediatric ICU it is mostly open plan with many beds. There will be some single rooms aswel for infectious patients or if possible families neddin privacy.
