Dd1 has broken the very expensive air conditioning unit we got only 3 weeks ago as her loft room was unusable in the heat. We had planned to use it for at least a few years and it was a big purchase.

It's ruined. Dh thinks "it'll be fine" and I said I can't use it as it could now be dangerous ? He thinks not
I'm right aren't I ?

I'm also totally gutted as we couldn't really afford it but needed it and now it's ruined and it's really upset me.
He didn't keep the receipt so can't claim on contents insurance can we ?

How did he pay for it? Can you ask for a copy of the receipt from the company?

JeffVadersMum · 08/07/2017 19:07

How did you pay for it?

How is it been broken?

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2017 19:08

Is it not fixable at all?

Namechangetempissue · 08/07/2017 19:08

What do you mean ruined? How? By who?

upperlimit · 08/07/2017 19:08

You don't necessarily need a paper receipt. You can use your bank statement as proof of purchase.

Twopeapods · 08/07/2017 19:10

How was it broken? An electrical repair shop might be able to fix it.

kimlo · 08/07/2017 19:10

you need a receipt to claim on your insurence? But I have'nt kept the receipt for everything I have ever bought, and surely I wouldn't need them to make a claim?

Gazelda · 08/07/2017 19:11

I guess it depends on how it is broken. Was it an accident? Was it mis-use? Was it a fault with the unit?
Did you pay by card? You'd be able to prove your purchase if so.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2017 19:12

Whenever I buy anything expensive or electrical I keep the receipt. I staple it to the instructions/guarantee. DH laughs but it's been very useful a few times.

GladAllOver · 08/07/2017 19:16

How was it broken?
Don't forget there will probably be an excess on your claim and it might push your premiums up.

AshesEmbersFlames · 08/07/2017 19:17

Steady on. Is it definitely ruined? What happened? Is there any reason you can't get a air con repairman to look at it?

GlitterGlue · 08/07/2017 19:20

What's wrong with it?

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:22

Dd felt faint went in her room and knocked it over its smashed on one said and the metal bits in the back are dented and bashed terribly. I've stood it back up but it is heavy so when it fell it really damaged it.
Luckily dd is ok

Dh paid with cash so no bank statement and didn't keep the receipt. I've always told him receipts for expensive stuff are important

Try getting it repaired.

SweetLuck · 08/07/2017 19:27

Is it still working?

Notknownatthisaddress · 08/07/2017 19:27

Rookie error. Paying with cash and not keeping the receipt. Plonker! I have done this half a dozen times at least, but not for anything worth more than £20

Yep try your accidental damage on your home contents insurance. Smile

SolomanDaisy · 08/07/2017 19:29

Your DD fainted onto it? I'm not sure I'd be saying she broke it, it was just an accident. I think it's worth talking to your insurance company, you clearly have the item and it's damaged so if you have accidental damage cover it's worth checking.

SandyDenny · 08/07/2017 19:33

How expensive was it? If you bought it from a large store they should be able to reprint the receipt if you tell them when and where you bought it.

Also, try and get it fixed

Believeitornot · 08/07/2017 19:35

He paid cash? Hmm

Where did he get it from - ring them up and ask if they do repairs.

dangermouseisace · 08/07/2017 19:36

You don't need a receipt to claim on your contents insurance. You just need to prove that you have the actual unit, and you do.

thereallochnessmonster · 08/07/2017 19:36

Claim on house insurance...

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:38

She didn't faint she just felt faint so staggered a bit (dd has pots its a regular occurrence)
I have said to dh that I've told him so many times that receipts for expensive items )it was £300) need to go on the fridge.
Im not even turning it on it looks awful and I'm here alone with dc...if there was a fire due to it being damaged I'd never get them out so I won't be trying it

OP posts:
Believeitornot · 08/07/2017 19:39

He paid £300 in cash?! Who carries that amount with them!

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:40

It's quite heavy I'm surprised she actually managed to push it over itbwas on a small table too as the tube wouldn't fit out of the window otherwise so that fell too. Dd was lucky she wasn't hurt
