Dd1 has broken the very expensive air conditioning unit we got only 3 weeks ago as her loft room was unusable in the heat. We had planned to use it for at least a few years and it was a big purchase.

It's ruined. Dh thinks "it'll be fine" and I said I can't use it as it could now be dangerous ? He thinks not
I'm right aren't I ?

I'm also totally gutted as we couldn't really afford it but needed it and now it's ruined and it's really upset me.
He didn't keep the receipt so can't claim on contents insurance can we ?

This is a very odd thread... have you not even tried it to see if it's broken op? Theres no reason to think it will cause a fire! Are you normally this stressed and anxious about things?

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:42

he paid cash as we had taken out some on a credit card and rest from account as didn't have enough in/on one or the other to purchase outright

Is it still working? Being a bit dented shouldn't make any difference if it still works. If you're still worried, take it to a repair shop for them to check it over - cheaper surely than buying a new one?

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:43

It just looks so damaged the side was off, the back was off and the metal bits (?) were really damaged and dented (they were under the back section that fell off not sure what they are)

OP posts:
Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:43

I'm not trying it as all I'm thinking is its electrical and damaged and could be a risk ?
Iam anxious yes

Since when do you need a receipt to claim on contents insurance?

RJnomore1 · 08/07/2017 19:45

Maybe if you post a photo someone could advise if it looks safe?

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:45

I assumed you would ? If not that's handy for us

OP posts:
GlitterGlue · 08/07/2017 19:46

Get it checked over. May well still be fine, or be fixable.

Excited101 · 08/07/2017 19:47

The first thing I would be doing would be trying it tbh. They have to be made to withstand an amount of bumping. You could always get someone to then take a look at it if you're concerned.

Are you getting help for your anxiety op?

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 08/07/2017 19:47

You took cash from a credit card? Hmm

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:49

The side and back panel I can put back on although the side one won't go back properly. It's the dents in the metal I'm concerned about and any internal damage as it really crashed down.
There is a lower panel that's still covered but I can see the same dents on all that metal too but can't get a clear pic of those dents as then over is on but the top ones are like this bottom section worse

Hidingtonothing · 08/07/2017 19:49

Even if the insurance do require a receipt you shouldn't have any problem getting a duplicate from the shop you bought it from.

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:50

Yes Iam getting help for anxiety. Have been doing well but this has really bothered me

OP posts:
Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:50

And yes, we did take cash from a credit card. Dd couldnt use her room and we didn't have the full amount so we made the decision to do that

OP posts:
Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:51

This is the damage I'm worried about I don't even know what these metal bits are but they are very dented especially on lower section

It's not safe is it ?

I'm confused as to you saying the parts in the back are bashed in OP. Most domestic portable units are contained within a protective shell. There is probably a grill at the back for fan extraction but the compressor and coils should be contained in the unit not 'naked' like on a fridge.

Do you know what model it is?

In my experience most competent refrigeration engineers should be able to assess and repair a domestic air con unit so have a Google for a local refrigeration service company or climate control.

You'll pay a call out fee which would normally include the first hour of work to do an assessment and hopefully repair.

acornsandnuts · 08/07/2017 19:53

Could you phone an air conditioner specialist, look on yell, and ask them to look at it. They do service and repairs so no reason that they won't look at your unit. It might be cheaper than excess on your insuance and increased premium.

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:53

When it fell the side and back casing came off

OP posts:
thequeenoftarts · 08/07/2017 19:56

Look worst case scenario pop into the shop where you bought it from, surely for items that expensive they will have taken a name and address for their system.. If not ask them to look back over till system for a copy of the receipt for that week, just tell them you can't find the original one and they may oblige you.

TressiliansStone · 08/07/2017 19:56

What type of dehumidifier was it?

If a refrigerant one, it could leak dangerous fumes when damaged. www.healthline.com/health/refrigerant-poisoning#overview1

I think any damaged refrigerant appliance can also be a fire risk.

I'm not sure about the risks of a desiccant type, but as one would contain a heater it still sounds like a potential fire risk.

Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

Spookle · 08/07/2017 19:57

Ah OK, cdamaged condensor fins. Any liquid leaking out OP? Did the unit pull it's power cord when it fell?

I am not suggesting you plug it in at all.

I'm just trying to determine the damage to give you an idea of repair etc.

What make and model is it?

CousinChloe · 08/07/2017 19:58

In future, would it be possible to pay extra money from your account onto your credit card, and then use the credit card to buy in the shop? Then you get the extra guarantee type protection from using a CC, and avoid the extortionate fee for taking cash off a credit card.

Disclaimer : I have not actually done this, but have accidentally paid my credit card bill twice and ended up with a positive balance on my credit card. I assume that could then be used?

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:58

It's this-would this be a dangerous one ?

It's not safe is it ?
OP posts:
Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 19:59

It didn't pull the power cord as it had an extension lead so it didnt pull it tight
