Dd1 has broken the very expensive air conditioning unit we got only 3 weeks ago as her loft room was unusable in the heat. We had planned to use it for at least a few years and it was a big purchase.

It's ruined. Dh thinks "it'll be fine" and I said I can't use it as it could now be dangerous ? He thinks not
I'm right aren't I ?

I'm also totally gutted as we couldn't really afford it but needed it and now it's ruined and it's really upset me.
He didn't keep the receipt so can't claim on contents insurance can we ?

As Chamelion has said follos the suggestion and if it makes any loud noise or 'smells hot' then switch off. It is very unlikely to have an electrical fault, so you won't get a 'shock' but mechanically a fan/motor MIGHT have got damaged (it would be unusually noisy) or the refrigerant MIGHT have escaped if a pipe is now leaky, in which case it won't cool properly. If it has leaked refrigerant it has probably evaporated by now (not sure what temperature R410A boils at).
Good chance the sides popping off and the soft 'fins' cushioned the fall.
This type of equipment should not be on a table but on the floor. If the pipe is too short, put it into a bucket (to collect condensate).

We've had 2 OT assessments. Both pretty useless, they gave dd a bath board, and suggested a long handled hairbrush. Ummed and ahhed over the stairs and said we would not be allowed a stairlift due to younger dcs and said they couldnt help with making the entrance to the house stepless but could provide some ramps which they did but they were the wrong size....

Is the alarm actually in her room Hedge? If it in the landing and her door is closed, it's no use if there's a fire in her room.

It is just outside her door so yes on the landing but she never shuts the door.
Yes we put the tube out of the velux

But surely common sense would have told you that wasn't a good idea?

I mean, its cost you a lot of Money you couldn't afford really and this was just an accident waiting to happen.

I'd go back to the retailer and get a copy receipt and then claim on your insurance. Assume you have accidental damage that is what it's for.

Urgh, I don't know what I was burbling about desiccants. Of course it's a refrigerant, it's air-conditioning! Boink!

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 08/07/2017 20:31

Sorry, didn't mean to divert the thread about the method of payment. Blush

Hope you can get it resolved easily.

millymae · 08/07/2017 20:32

My first point of contact would be the manufacturer An air conditioning unit that cost £300. shouldnt in my view be irreversibly damaged by it being accidentally knocked over. The unit must have come with some sort of guarantee - did you send the warranty card off.
Not helpful I know, but I can't believe that the receipt has been thrown away - your husband must have more faith than most of us that appliances nowadays never go wrong.

Sunnymorningwithbacon · 08/07/2017 20:32

Also, given she's so unstable on her feet, can you put her in a different room? I'd worry massively about her on steep stairs to an attic room.

Warranties won't cover misuse of an item though

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 20:35

The stairs to the loft are the same as the other stairs we had a special staircase made and fitted so it's no steeper or narrower. The only problem we have is sometimes she can't get up or down if very tired we end up then taking food etc to her and she can rest. Occasionally if very bad she sleeps on the sofa bed downstairs with one of us.
We can't go up there due to the other dcs night time needs. For now it's the only option. Hoping in a couple of years we may be able to move the boys up there if dd doesn't improve and give her their room

It was working well with the door open cooling dds room enough and I think helping with rest of the house

There is no way a warranty will cover knocking off a table when someone fainted into it.

I bet the instructions say not to use with an extension and not to put it on a table so the op will have voided the warranty by doing so.

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 20:37

Accidental damage on contents insurance then ? (If it is in fact broken I will check tomorrow)

I've just looked at it again.... it's on wheels/castors

barefoofdoctor · 08/07/2017 20:39

Could you try phoning the makers of the air con unit for advice on the possibility of repair/whether or not it poses a danger? Lay it on thick about the accident coming about as a result of your daughter being ill? ;)

Sunnymorningwithbacon · 08/07/2017 20:40

documents.4rgos.it/v1/static/1816822_R_D001

Instructions say don't place where it can fall and don't use an extension lead

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 20:41

Yes it had been stuck in place to avoid movement (well supposed to boy sire if that was the prob as well) with something similar to blue tac but a bit more substantial.
So yes, safety failing all round I know that. On a table, not properly secured, extension etc.

I must be missing something. Those dents look minor. The cover came off but was easily put back on. I'd use it now without thinking. Maybe stand around & make sure it functioned same as before, for 20 minutes.

Hedgehog80 · 08/07/2017 20:42

I didn't know about the extension not being advised. I wouldn't have even thought that'd be an issue. Dh set it up so he must have read the book (or not)
