Jacob Rees-Mogg - Prime Minister?

I know he is very posh and comes across as old fashioned and a bit quirky/eccentric, but he came across very well on Question Time, made some good points and seemed to understand a lot of the problems people are going through, was articulate and not shouty.

I know a lot of people will hate him simply because he is "posh", rich and old fashioned but would he make a good Prime Minister? I think he would.

What is it with us Brits? Show us some landed gentry - especially ones with a bloody parliamentary seat - and we stagger backwards, doffing our caps and mumbling 'yes m'lord'.

The Tories brutalise poor people. Stop voting for them. JRM would be a disgusting PM.

Scaverin · 08/07/2017 15:15

Ugh this hero worship of the toff politicians is so depressing. Get off your bended knee!

notangelinajolie · 08/07/2017 15:16

Haha sorry OP but you aren't going to get many people agreeing with you on here. I'm with you and quite like him too.

tribpot · 08/07/2017 15:18

We appear to have got to the point where electability is decided by whether you're funny on Have I Got News For You.

It's a shame we couldn't get there whilst Charles Kennedy was alive (if we had to get there at all). I would seriously rather have Prince William as PM - born even further up the feudal hierarchy but does at least have a passing understanding of the issues of real people.

ShoesHaveSouls · 08/07/2017 15:20

Are you having a fucking laugh? Jacob Rees Mogg is an absolute idiot, no way would he make a good PM. I'd rather keep Theresa May for the next 20 years. And it's nothing to do with him being an insufferable toff, although he is an insufferable toff. He belongs in the last century - way back in the last century.

His voting record is awful, he doesn't believe in Climate change (or thinks we shouldn't take any action), he's voted against gay rights, marriage equality and human rights.

Yes, yes, he was funny on HIGNFY - and speaks well, but that doesn't make a good PM. Boris is quite funny too. (Well, you can laugh at him).

YokoReturns · 08/07/2017 15:20

'I quite like him'.

Because it's all a big joke, isn't it??

castleontheground · 08/07/2017 15:21

That website is great. Look at his voting record people!

C8H10N4O2 · 08/07/2017 15:23

His voting record is appalling.

From memory UKIP stood down in his favour at the GE because he was aligned with their policies which should tell you a lot (annoyingly I can't find this on their website now).

If you want a posh sounding comedy act Hinge & Bracket can be found on YouTube and the impact is less damaging

pigsDOfly · 08/07/2017 15:27

I agree he made some good points on question time, but I think that's as far as it goes. It really doesn't make him good PM material though.

And as for Caroline Lucas having a good grip on reality as pp said?

I lived in Brighton under Caroline Lucas and the Greens, trust me Caroline Lucas and reality are not words that should be used in the same breath.

notangelinajolie · 08/07/2017 15:27

Because it's all a big joke, isn't it??

I'm not sure what you mean by this? But no, not joking I actually do like him.

rogueantimatter · 08/07/2017 15:28

He has an incredibly patronising manner. I'd be surprised if he doesn't think that he is much more intelligent than the vast majority of people.

BishopBrennansArse · 08/07/2017 15:29

Oh fuck no

TizzyDongue · 08/07/2017 15:30

This is the second thread I've read today about this man (the other being aboit his sixth baby, Sixus (or similar).

I've no clue who he is, (not in uk) but having just googled him I've discovered I've come across him before as I was greatly entertained by him Instagram page (especially the tattoo parlour one - least I think it's the same man).

However the reason I found it hilarious (seemed like the 1950s, out of touch with reality from everyone) suggests to me he'd be a terrible prime minister.

I actually thought he was unelected and just a bit of a local eccentric who people just rolled thier eyes at and left be.

Scaverin · 08/07/2017 15:30

And what Mogg will fund out if he is wheeled out as a genuine potential Tory leader (I won't say PM as I really don't see them winning the next election) is that he'll be under much greater scrutiny. He won't be just that amusing chap who stepped through his wardrobe in 1927 and ended up in 2017.

user1498939511 · 08/07/2017 15:31

Stephen Crabb for me working class, good head on his shoulders, would like to see more of him.

Scaverin · 08/07/2017 15:32

Isn't Stephen Crabb another homophobe? Albeit a less plummy voiced one.

riceuten · 08/07/2017 15:34

Leaving aside whether he is posh or not - frankly, that's irrelevant - why do you think Rees-Mogg would make a good PM, OP ? I am genuinely intrigued to know.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/07/2017 15:40

Just because someone appears to be charmingly eccentric it doesn't mean that he is a good guy.

taytopotato · 08/07/2017 15:41

Don't think you would see him in Pride Parade. He has been seen driving his Bentley and Lexus on his way to the church.

He has ultra Catholic views- just check his voting records.

ExplodedCloud · 08/07/2017 15:42

pigsDOfly you do understand the MP doesnt run the town? The council may have been Green but Caroline Lucas wasnt running it.

ExplodedCloud · 08/07/2017 15:44

Scaverin yes I think Crabbe had some links to an organisation that tried to 'cure' homosexuality.

fakenamefornow · 08/07/2017 15:49

Oh God! The whole world is already laughing at us, they'll piss themselves if he's PM.

pigsDOfly · 08/07/2017 15:49

I was talking about her policies ExplodedCloud. I take it that the party as a whole would be in agreement on most of their policies.

Scaverin · 08/07/2017 15:52

Yes, that was it Cloud! I seem to remember it coming to light when his name was being mentioned during the last leadership selection. The only Tory I could see making a vaguely competent fist of it is Hammond and even then I'd have my reservations.

AufderAutobahn · 08/07/2017 15:52

If people dislike him it's not because he's "a bit posh", it's his voting for policies that hurt the most vulnerable, the fact he's a heartless twat. I know us Brits love an eccentric, it allows a lot of knobbers to get away with being knobbers (see also Boris Johnson) but really most people don't view his poshness alone as a reason to dislike him.
