Friend insulting my interior design (lack of) skills

In need of a vent, hot weather and bitches don't mix :P

I've recently done my DS bedroom bright and colourful marvel themed bedroom, and he absolutely LOVES it, which is the only thing I care about, as it's HIS room.

Without boasting its what I imagine is many little boys dream room & looks great. Plus we saved bloody hard to make it extra special for him.

My friend takes one foot into his new room (with her son, who is my sons friend) and honestly looks disgusted and does not try to hide her anguish.

"Why have you ruined your house"
"you should have painted it grey with stars like my kids, so it looks classy

Her son on the other hand said it was the coolest room he had ever seen, which is a big thing when you have just heard your mother slag it off!!

I searched Pinterest etc a lot when designing his room & noticed a grey/monochrome trend for kids rooms, yes they look lovely, but I'm sure if you gave most kids a choice they would not pick the scandi themed room! And you are not giving them any choice, and just giving them what you want. I'm not saying this is he case for all kids, of course some children actually want beautiful modern bedrooms.

Aibu to hate the trend, just let little kids have actual children's colourful rooms :(

Picture from Pinterest of what I mean x

Your friend is clearly a bitter DC fan!

ignore her nonsense, she should have kept her negative opinion to herself. It's a kids room, the opinion of said kid is all that matters really! I agree that most kids wouldn't want a minimalist, grey bedroom.

HappyAxolotl · 07/07/2017 21:54

I love the sound of a Marvel themed bedroom! And mentally running through my list of geeky pals, half of them would too. (The other half would go for Star Trek.)

Mulberry72 · 07/07/2017 21:54

I think it looks fantastic! You've done a great job, ignore your friend she sounds jealous!

SoupDragon · 07/07/2017 21:54

I do find it amusing that you are complains about your friend insulting your interior design choices by insulting her interior design choices...!

iamyourequal · 07/07/2017 21:54

Oh my goodness. I don't think many posters have actually read the OP s post! The picture is an example of a monochrome room admired by OP friend but not by OP. OP has decorated her son's room Marvel themed and brightly coloured. Sounds fabulous for a little boy! She also has a really rude friend..

GreatBigPolarBear · 07/07/2017 21:55

I really want to see his room now!

Ashvis · 07/07/2017 21:56

I kinda want to redecorate my room with a Marvel theme now. Pretty sure dh wouldn't mind. FWIW, if my ds said he wanted a themed bedroom we'd bend over backwards to decorate it the way he wanted, and I could guarantee it wouldn't be monochrome he'd ask for.

Gemini69 · 07/07/2017 21:56

I LOVE this OP.. very nice fresh clean lines. I LOVE IT x

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/07/2017 21:58

If I gave my DD (10) a monochrome room, she'd think I'd gone mad. Black and White is not my DD at all. Your DS's room though, sounds awesome.

BuzzKillington · 07/07/2017 21:59

That room is lovely and tasteful!

category12 · 07/07/2017 21:59

Picture of your child's room, OP, please, peops are getting confused.

Flisspaps · 07/07/2017 22:00

Your friend is a dick. My DS wants a Superhero room, that's what he's getting. Wall stickers, Spiderman cushions, batman fairy lights, city print wallpaper. He's a child, he doesn't live in a minimalist interior design catalogue.

elfycat · 07/07/2017 22:02

I like colourful rooms and comics. What you've done sounds great and completely normal.

The other room in your OP... looks like Cruella Deville had her way with those puppies. Stuff of nightmares.

for a bedroom, or a cosy living room. Might be OK for a slick dining room

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 07/07/2017 22:02

Spot those who don't read properly. Wink

She is BVU to criticise and her bluntness is uncalled for. You do whatever makes your son happy, it's his room.

luckylucky24 · 07/07/2017 22:02

Pic is what a ten/preeteen may like. Not a child.

BuzzKillington · 07/07/2017 22:02

Sorry - just read it properly and realised that's the opposite of your son's room.

I am with your friend and have always done the kids' rooms in a trendy, muted style. I like to think I am instilling a bit of taste in them.

A bright, garish 'Marvel' theme would be anathema to me.

But I would never say this out loud. Each to their own.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/07/2017 22:03

That room is not a room for a real child. Far too tidy and will soon look grubby. Not practical as well as being very dull.

user1498911470 · 07/07/2017 22:03

it's a lovely room. Children should be allowed to choose how they have their own rooms, it is their personal space after all.

CremeFresh · 07/07/2017 22:06

I'd think I'd gone colour blind in that room !

ShastaBeast · 07/07/2017 22:06

Meh, I was gonna go for bright colours in my DD's room but decided a calming colour would be better for her bedroom. Plus it's more grown up so will last longer. I do however allow them to express themselves with character clothing etc. I can't understand parents who dress their kids in pale scandi type clothing, especially expensive stuff, it would get filthy unless you policed their every move.

GrumpyOldBag · 07/07/2017 22:08

Yuck.

The room in that picture is horrid.

Don't really like the trend for overdeisgned kids' bedrooms. Or anything really. But each to his own.

Crochetthedayaway · 07/07/2017 22:09

This post isn't working that well judging by the posts. I do understand what you mean OP, tasteful rooms may look great but are they really what kids want in their spaces? I would quite like tasteful child rooms but being honest my kids want bright colourful spaces and they are their spaces. So we have less designer chic and more individual DC taste.

altiara · 07/07/2017 22:10

I wouldn't give this room to my DS! I would to my 11 DD but with some splashes of aqua and hot pink (and it would still never look like that as she has furniture and stuff).
Grey and white stars - yes I'd also like for a baby as that's when YOU get to choose the nursery colour scheme. But I actually chose yellow with baby jungle animals and bright colours and probably would again.

GinIsIn · 07/07/2017 22:12

Wow, people really don't RTFT,
do they?! OP HAS DONE THE OPPOSITE OF THE ROOM IN THE PICTURE. We are talking more like this, I suspect....

I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD LEARN TO READ AND NOT JUST LOOK AT THE PICTURES.
