AIBU?

To find the use of the word 'curating' utterly wnakery and pretentious?

I've noticed it being used more and more. Today on Facebook a Boden ad popped up - 'we're curating a collection of clothing for all the family' Hmm. What a load of bobbins.

Also, home interior magazines. 'Saskia curates a collection of bohemian trinkets and retro objects' Saskia has a load of old car boot tut in her drawing room.

Unless you are in charge of a museum using the word 'curating' should be banned, you pretentious arses.

Amen! Grin

Henrysmycat · 07/07/2017 05:53

Thank you!!!!! I feel the same. Especially on the interior stuff. Random stuff thrown together= "curated art". What a whole lot of garbage.

BartholinsSister · 07/07/2017 06:03

Yes!

GetafixTheDruid · 07/07/2017 06:04

Grin glad I'm not alone!
Who do they think they are appealing to? There can't be that many people out there who could use that term without wanting to stab themselves in the eye immediately after? Are the very few people who could, prolific buyers of home interior magazines and Boden clothing?

I'm bamboozled by it.

Off to curate some boiling water, a tea bag and some milk in a mug Wink

YANBU. It's fine to curate the Ashmolean. But lipsticks? Too far.

Fozzleyplum · 07/07/2017 06:08

I agree. There's a lot of this about- taking a perfectly everyday activity and giving it a pretentious name that makes it sound like some sort of artistic achievement or scientific process.

I give you:
sourced = bought
hydrate=have a drink
curated=have

WipsGlitter · 07/07/2017 06:09

See also "styled" lots of bloggers "styling" their outfits.

JemandScout · 07/07/2017 06:13

Yanbu. The same goes for 'sourcing' when you mean buying. "I sourced my kitchen from Ikea". Boak.

KERALA1 · 07/07/2017 06:16

The words "safeguarding" and "support". Just so overused such buzz words. Don't know why they annoy me but they do.

Tailypo · 07/07/2017 06:21

YANBU!! Grin The amount of jobs I've seen with the title 'Content curator' πŸ™„

Tailypo · 07/07/2017 06:21

Or 'reaching out' - yet another word that gives me the absolute rage Angry

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 07/07/2017 06:23

You learn something new everyday! I thought people who curate work in museums!

Brittbugs80 · 07/07/2017 06:28

Sourced gets my goat.

I've managed to source some on point cushions with pineapples on , this season's trend.

No, you walked into any feckin high street shop that sells cushions and bought one and feckin pineapples seem to be printed on everything so it was hardly hard feckin work.

And breathe.....

SuperVeggie · 07/07/2017 06:31

"Ella has curated a collection of handpicked, vintage items that give the lounge a personal feel"

Well yes, presumably she would have picked the items herself given that it's her house. And can you still use the word 'handpicked' if you bought stuff online?!

PseuDenim · 07/07/2017 06:33

Ditto "edit" - as in, "the shoe edit", "the summer edit" etc. So pretentious!

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2017 06:33

Agree op! Also increasingly irritated by sourced, surely it should mean tracking a particularly desirable item down, preferably in a different country.

DoraChance · 07/07/2017 06:34

Cannot stand 'hacks' either. It's a tip FFS!

SuburbanRhonda · 07/07/2017 06:35

@KERALA1

The words "safeguarding" and "support"

As someone who works in family support in a school, and who is also a designated safeguarding lead, which words would you have us use instead?

muddlefuck · 07/07/2017 06:38

"shop the look" by clicking the link on an internet ad that takes you to the shop's site Angry

shop. the. look.

fuck off

user1492287253 · 07/07/2017 06:40

you make dinner or cook tea.

Gordon Ramsey preps.

GetafixTheDruid · 07/07/2017 06:41

userthenlotsofnumbers they do, you're right!

Agree with sourced. I might source some pizza in Waitrose later. I'm then going curate a collection of pizza and salad in my fridge.
Later I'm going to handpick the items I sourced earlier, curate them on my plate and then eat them *

*translation: It's pizza and salad for tea tonight

For your irritation I provide you
the curated life

MintToBee · 07/07/2017 06:42

Hacks also give me the rage.
Here's a life hack for you, DON'T.

I'm off to curate my deconstructed teabag, milk and sugar into my handpicked mug with water from my vintage kettle. #making memories.
